Civil Engineering at JUST• The Civil Engineering Department was founded in 1979 at Yarmouk University with

three other Engineering Departments, and was moved to JUST in 1986. During the first year of its foundation, only (60) students were admitted. Since then an average of (100-150) students are enrolled in the department every year making a total number of (612) undergraduate students enrolled during the academic year 2003/2004. The total number of graduates reached more than (1200) students in the undergraduate program, and (260) students in the M.Sc. Programs.

• The department was the first in Jordan to offer a graduate program leading to M.Sc. degree. It began accepting M.Sc. students during the year 1980/1981. Present graduate enrollment is (70) students including the Ph.D. program which started two years ago. The number of department academic staff has also grown during the period. While there were only two when the department was founded, there are now (35) full time faculty members. Further increase is expected in the near future

• The Department was established in September 1989 within the Faculty of Science & Arts with the aim of awarding a B.Sc. degree in Applied Biological Sciences. The B.Sc. program was designed to provide interdisciplinary training in applied biology, and to familiarize the student with a variety of traditional and modern techniques used in biology. The aim of the program is to enable the student to work in different fields (as education, food and environmental projects) and analysis in different scientific centers as Ministry of Health, higher education, public security as well public and private sectors.

• The Department started its M.Sc. program in 1996 to meet the increasing demand on highly qualified graduates in the field of Applied Biological Sciences in Jordan and abroad.

• Significant progress has taken place in recent years in the field of Civil Engineering. The need for design qualifications in Civil Engineering are also on the rise. The aim of this department is to extend the knowledge and expertise in a wide range of Civil Engineering subject areas.

• The academic staff have established strengths in Civil Engineering areas such as: Structures, Soils Mechanics, Foundations, Environment, and Water Resources. The department was established in l990. Currently it has 16 faculty members with 204 undergraduate students. The department offers (B.Sc.) degree in Civil Engineering through an integrated study plan which consists of the basic science, mathematics, and computer courses, in addition to the engineering core courses.. The department has several state-of the-art laboratories which have been designed to implement the basic theoretical knowledge in the fields of Civil Engineering.
