KERRANG! Institution – Bauer

Circulation 42,203 (Jan-Jun '12) Readership 378,000

Mission statement:Kerrang! will ensure that we are constantly appealing to our spectrum of readers. From the younger teenage readers who are more open to different genres of rock music – from EMO to Thrash etc, to the readers who respect Kerrang! as an authority when it comes to our scene’s heritage bands.

Each issue will include a balance of bands and scenes to guarantee that we’re providing for our readers’ need for variety and their passionate appetite for their favourite bands as well as their desire to be introduced to new music within our world.

We will focus on the biggest things that are going on in our world each week, as well as guaranteeing that we are giving our main base of younger readers everything they need to get into and on top of this the interest in older, harder bands, cementing our role as an educator.

These statistics show that the audience for kerrang is slightly male dominated, however it appeals to both genders. The male audience is just above half of their readers. Typical conventions of kerrang are quite dark colour schemes to fit with the rock genre and this may be associated with males more than females who are often stereotyped as girly and like pink etc.

This has the same male to female ratio as NME does (66-34) which is surprising as the magazines are quite different. The genre/style of magazine is different yet they have the same amount of male audience over females.

NME reaches over 1.1 million music fans every week through their magazine, NME.com, NME video, NME radio and the brand’s live events and awards.

NME is the longest published and most respected music weekly in the world. Every week it gives its readers the most exciting, most authoritative coverage of the very best in new music, including award-winning features, the latest releases, live reviews, the definitive guide to the best new bands in its Radar section, as well as a regular look back through the magazine's incredible 60 year heritage.

Here is the breakdown of male to female gender for the readers of NME magazine. Male percentage is 66% in comparison to female 34%. This shows that NME appeals to more men which I find surprising as I would have thought it would have been more balanced.
