INTRODUCTIONUniversity of Campinas - UNICAMP - is a leading Brazilian public university that has attained international recognition for excellence through its innovative approach to higher education. The Institute of Computing - IC, which celebrated forty years of existence in 2009, was the first academic institution in Brazil to offer a bachelor's degree in Computer Science. The graduate program was started in 1977 and has earned a reputation for providing exceptional higher education. It offers a stimulating learning and research environment for graduate students through a combination of high-level teaching, individual studies, high quality supervision and international opportunities of collaboration with other research centers.

Research areas. The program includes several research areas (www.ic.unicamp.br/cpg/areas):

algorithms and optimization, artificial intelligence and computer vision, computational biology and bioinformatics, computational geometry, computer architecture, computers and education, computer graphics and image processing, computer networks and distributed systems, cryptography and security, databases, fault tolerance, graph theory, human computer interaction, numerical computing, programming languages and compilers, software engineering.

Academic excellence. The program is consistently ranked as one of Brazil’s top institutions in providing high-level research, and Master and PhD degrees that carry prestige and professional recognition as shown by the more than 50 awards (www.ic.unicamp.br/cpg/premios).Moreover, the program has received the highest number of awards for best doctoral thesis in the yearly competition promoted by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC).

Faculty members excellence. Twenty two of the Institute's 43 faculty members hold research productivity grants funded by the Brazilian Funding Agency CNPq. Faculty boasts international experience and diverse education background, being actively engaged as members of evaluation committees of Brazilian funding agencies such as FAPESP, CNPq and CAPES, as well as editorial boards of journals and conferences.

OPPORTUNITIES

Master´s degree. The program enables its graduates to pursue further academic studies as well as successful professional careers in industry.

Doctoral degree. The graduates of this very demanding and high quality program mostly follow their career as faculty members at various universities and as researchers at organizations including industry.

Straight doctoral program. Outstanding candidates may be admitted to doctoral studies without a Master degree.

International internship program. Doctoral students are encouraged to spend from a few months to a year at renowned institutions abroad in order to foster international cooperation. In the last two years 68% of doctoral students participated in this program.

Teaching traineeship program. Doctoral students are encouraged to train as future teaching faculty by lecturing undergraduate courses with financial support from the university.

Post-doctoral program. The Institute of Computing is interested in attracting outstanding post-doctoral candidates who may be supported by FAPESP scholarships of R$ 5028, or by other scholarships available from CNPq and CAPES.
