b) Training:IndividualswhowouldliketouseanypieceofequipmentintheHumanTestingCentermustcompleteatrainingsessionwithCorestaff(CoreRatesApply).ThesetrainingsserveasbothatechnicaltutorialforequipmentuseandanorientationforuserstotheHumanTestingCenter.Foruserswhoalreadyhaveexpertiseintheuseofaparticularpieceofequipment,theycanrequestthattheyjustdemonstrateproficiencyinuseandskipthetutorial.PleasenotethateventhoughausermaybeproficientinthetechnicalaspectsofacertainpieceofequipmentthattheintegrationofthebillinganddatastoragesystemsintheIALScoresdiffersfromstandalonepiecesofequipment.Beingtrainedontheseaspectswillensurethatdataisproperlystoredandbillingrecordsareaccurate.
Aspartofthetraining,theprospectiveusermustalsoprovidetheCoreStaffwithproofoftherequireEHStrainings.AllrequiretrainingsarelocatedatthebeginningofeachinstrumentsStandardOperatingProcedure.

Nowyoucanattachthecalibrationgashose/whiteconnectorfromthecylindertotheCalGasPortonthemetaboliccart.Thisislocatedonthebackoftheunit.ItistotheleftoftheRoomAirportandjustabovetheO2Rangeswitch.Youmustholdthefrontoftheunit,soitdoesnotfalltothefloor,whilebringingthecalibrationgashose/whiteconnectortotheCalGasport.Stayparalleltothefloorandpushtheconnectorstraightintheportconnector.Toremove,pushdownlightlyonthemetalclaspandpullthecalibrationgashose/whiteconnectoraway.
12. Now,touchpneumotach,itshouldbewarm,indicatingitisshouldbewarmedup.Ensurethat30-
minuteshaspassed,andcontinewithcalibration

Thesystemisnowreadyforthethreestepcalibration.Oncethesystemhasbeensetup,thecalibrationprocessisveryquickandeasy.Thesystemshouldbecalibratedagaininbetweenmultiplesubjectsorifithasbeensittingturnedonbutnotusedforalongperiodoftime.Theonlycalibrationsteptheoreticallyneededafterinitialcalibrationistoapplythecalibrationgasagain.However,theenemyofthepneumotachismoisture.Excessmoisturewillelectricallydistortwhatthepneumotachissensing;thiswillbereflectedinerroneousreadingofthe3litersyringeas9,12,15litersetc...Thescreeninsidetheroundovenneedstobeasdryaspossible,soyoumayhavetousethesyringetoinputroomairacrossthesensorandintothemixingchamberifyouaretestingmultiplesubjects.ThepneumotachisverysensitivetosubtlechangesinCO2.Thisisthereasonwhyweneedtoletthepneumotachheatuptooperatingtemperature.DoingatestwithacoldpneumotachwillhavedistortedCO2results–theRERandVO2kgreadingswillbewayoff.

Generalfactsaboutmodels
ModelsinV3Dconsistofdefinitionsofsegmentsandlandmarksusedtocreatethesesegments.Thesedefinitionsareneededsothatthe3Dorientationofsegmentscanbetrackedduringamovement.Ingeneral,segmentsaredefinedusingrealorvirtually-definedmarkersattheproximalanddistalends,aswellasradiioftheproximalanddistalends.Atleastthreemarkersareneededtodefinetheorientationofasegment.Whenasegmentiscreated,itisassignedacoordinatesystem(seered,green,andblueorthogonalaxesinimagebelow)whichisrigidlyassociatedwiththesegment’sproximaljoint(e.g.,thethighcoordinatesystemwillbeanchoredatthehipjoint).Modelsmustalsoincludeassignmentoftrackingmarkers,ormarkersthatareregisteredtothesegmentdefinitioninacalibrationtrialandarethenusedtotrackthemovementofthesegmentduringmovementtrials.Thesegmentcoordinatesystemismodeledasrigidlyrelatedtotheorientationofthetrackingmarkersandforthisreasontrackingmarkersareoftenplacedonplasticshells(e.g.,thighandshankclusters)oronanatomicallocationswithlittleskinmotionartifact(e.g.,acromio-clavicularjointsduringlowerextremitytasks).Inadditiontosegment-specificdefinitions,modelsrequireanindividual’sheightandbodymassforcalculationofsegmentinertialpropertiesandjointkinetics.
Theorientationofadjacentsegmentcoordinatesystemswithrespecttoeachotherprovidesthejointangleorjointtranslationalposition.Forthisreason,itisimportanttopayattentiontotheorientationofsegmentcoordinatesystemsastheyarecreated.Intheimagebelow,youcanseethatallvisiblesegmentshavethered(X)axisorientedtothemodel’sleft.Thismatchingorientationprovideseaseofunderstandingforjointdefinitions.Forexample,rotationsaboutXbetweentheshankandthigharesagittalplanejointangles,thoseaboutYarefrontalplanejointangles,andthoseaboutZaretransverseplanejointangles.Inordertoobtainaccurateandmeaningfuldata,itiscriticalthatyoucorrectlydefineandconstructyourmodel.RecommendationsformodelingsegmentsandjointsofinterestcanbefoundontheV3Dwiki,aswellasinpublishedrecommendationsfromtheInternationalSocietyofBiomechanics.
