Institut Bioforce Afrique
To ensure a timely and appropriate response to a nutritional emergency or to address the challenges of improving access to water in the Sahel, enhancing local capacity and capability is indispensible. In 2014, the Institut Bioforce Afrique is doing just that by launching two unprecedented French-language vocational training programs in the Malian capital Bamako: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion (WASH) Project Manager (responsable de projets Eau, Hygiène et Assainissement) and Nutrition Project Manager (responsable de projets Nutrition).

Why a new Nutrition and WASH Training Program in West Africa?
Institut Bioforce professional training now available in West Africa
For 30 years now, the Institut Bioforce has been working both in France and abroad to develop the key skills of humanitarian aid, development and public health sector professionals to improve the impact and relevance of their actions. The Institute in France offers six qualifying programs, including a licence professionnelle (bachelor degree level) and a Master of Science (Msc). Each year, students travel from around 20 different countries to train at the Institute.
Access remains limited however for African professionals due to financial and logistics constraints (high cost of living in France, limited numbers of grants, residence permits, etc.).
The Institut Bioforce Afrique, a Burkinabé non-profit organization created in 2012, wishes to make an active contribution to improving access to professional training for French-speaking African professionals working in humanitarian aid and develop-ment, therefore developing the capacities and capabilities on the ground. In September 2014, the Institute Bioforce Afrique will launch two professional training programs in the Malian capital Bamako: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Project Manager (WASH PM) and Nutrition Project Manager (NUTRITION PM).
What does the Integrated WASH PM and NUTRITION PM Training Program represent?
Two curricula with a common core.Easier access due to West Africa location and modular, flexible design.Training content based on recognized competency frameworks.A program that covers both technical and management skills.Program graduates that are operational immediately.Continual adaptation of training content and tools to employers' needs. An approach to learning inspired by the field... and adapted to the field:A team of facilitators combining teaching skills and professional experience.A variety of teaching methods and rhythms (theory, practical work, case studies, role plays, in-situ learning, workshops, self-learning etc.).70% of training time dedicated to professional situational training (practical application of theoretical content).Benchmark training:Today, 80% of students completing Bioforce training are employed in humanitarian programs.

Responding to these challenges through vocational training
The integrated vocational training program will enhance capacity and capability among local, national and international nutrition and WASH professionals in French-speaking Africa, therefore building the resilience of local communities (humanitarian response, development, risk reduction). The qualification will offer participants the opportunity to be recruited by an employer in the given sector or access positions of greater responsibility with their current employer, depending on their employment status when beginning the program. The diploma, competency or attendance certificate obtained (depending on the option selected) can facilitate the passage into a management position either in the country of residence or through expatriation.
Two inter-related professional training programsThe programs will run simultaneously, with shared sessions for certain common core modules and active exchanges between the two groups.

Both courses will be facilitated by a training team from the Institut Bioforce Afrique (Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso), in partnership with the Charles Mérieux Infectiology Centre (CICM) in Bamako. The teaching team will receive support from and skill share with the Institut Bioforce Training Department in France. The long-term goal is that the majority of facilitators, them-selves experienced humanitarian aid and development professionals, are African nationals.
Our partners in the nutrition and WASH sectors will constitute a Program Development Committee to ensure the technical accuracy of the course content and its relevance to the real issues regularly facing the organizations on the ground.
