Instep Sustainable Events Programme (ISEP) helps events of all types and size understand their carbon footprint, and enhance sustainability on a wider scale.

Through a scientific foundation, and internationally recognised standards ISO 20121 and ISO 14064, we help to put in place sustainable management systems, help test your event’s compliance, and formalise your sustainability efforts.

ISEP clients benefit by providing a credible way to report their event’s sustainability efforts to their stakeholders, via the verification and quantification of key environmental impact areas such as carbon footprint, energy use, water consumption and waste output.

They gain a competitive advantage via cost saving, good publicity, risk mitigation, compliance and in tenders where good environmental practices are a requirement.

We also provide an Instep programme for Organisations.

Introduction

Page 3: Instep Sustainability Events Programmes 2013

All Instep programmes rigorously adhere to international standards to provide clients with the credibility that they need to achieve their objectives. ISEP is guided by ISO 20121 and ISO 14064.Standards

→ Specifies principles and requirements at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals. It includes requirements for the design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organization's GHG inventory. → Also known as the GHG Protocol (WRI / WBCSD), and it the de facto and “standardised” carbon footprint calculation methodology used globally. This is especially important for clients who wish to purchase carbon offsets.

→ Specifies requirements for an event sustainability management system for any type of event or event-related activity, and provides guidance on conforming to those requirements. It is designed to address the management of improved sustainability throughout the entire event management cycle.→ Launched with the 2012 London Olympics, and based on the popular British Standard BS 8901.

Our programmes enable our clients to “do things right”, by providing formality, credibility and continuity to their existing and planned sustainability initiatives and efforts.

The ISEP programme includes a full assessment of the event's key impact areas. To ensure relevance and accuracy, data is collected on-site pertaining to energy & water consumption, waste generated and transport emissions of suppliers and attendees. This data is processed into information and presented in a report that outlines the event's objectives and achievements as well as it details on the carbon emissions and other environmental factors.

“Australian University Sport (AUS) engaged Instep in 2011 to create a sustainability profile for our largest event – the Australian University Games (AUG). The AUG is a multi sport event attracting 7,000 participants across 30 sports over five days. Instep provided AUS with a sustainability assessment of the 2011 AUG which has resulted in the development of an AUS sustainability guideline, as well as providing a starting point for our events to build more efficient sustainability practices. The intention is for AUS to further engage Instep on (at least) a biennial basis to monitor (and improve) event sustainability for AUS events.”

“We have found the team to be incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and often go above and beyond the call of duty to assist us to make improvements on our event. What Oxfam likes the most about Instep is the all encompassing package they provide. Their knowledge and guidance during pre-event planning sessions on specific environmental event issues is impressive. During the physical data collection and monitoring at the actual event Instep are incredibly thorough and provide minimal disruption to event operations.”

“Throughout the programme I found the team at Instep to be informative, approachable and extremely professional.  I felt the involvement from Instep was a key factor in the festivals success. I would have no hesitation in recommending Instep and will continue to work with them on our future events.”
