Installing VirtualBox and Windows on OS X Prerequisites: Verify that your installation of OS X and Safari have the most current updates from the Apple App Store before proceeding with these instructions. Download Software: 1. Open Safari, and sign into the UVa Software Gateway (https://virginia. onthehub.com) using NetBadge. 2. Finish checkout and you will encounter a receipt page. (Receipts for past orders can be found at “Your Account/ Orders” at the top of the page.) Installing VirtualBox and Windows on OS X

Prerequisites:Verify that your installation of OS X and Safari have the most current updates from the Apple App Store before proceeding with these instructions.

Download Software:

1. Open Safari, and sign into the UVa Software Gateway (https://virginia.onthehub.com) using NetBadge.

2. Select “More Options,” then “DreamSpark Premium” from the available tabs.

3. From the Microsoft Products listed, click Windows 10.

4. On the next page, click Add to Cart next to “Windows 10 Education 32/64-bit (English) - DreamSpark“

5. Click “OK” if you receive a prompt about platform conflict.

6. Finish checkout and you will encounter a receipt page.• (Receipts for past

orders can be found at “Your Account/Orders” at the top of the page.)

• PRINT OR WRITE DOWN the red text, the product key is needed to activate Windows: Product Key:

7. Click “Start Download.”

8. Click “Download SDM” and wait for the download to finish.9. Run “SDM.pkg” by double-clicking on it in Safari’s download window.

• “Continue” to License.• “Continue” to Destination Select, and “Agree” to the terms of service.• Click “Install for me only” and “Continue” to Installation Type.• “Install.”• Authenticate your username and password to “Install Software.”• “Close” once the installation completes.

When the SDM.pkg download has completed, double-click the file to launch it.

10. Return to the webpage, click “Download .SDX,” and wait for the download to finish.

11. From Safari’s download window, double-click the “.sdx” file to open SecureDownloadManager.

12. Find the 64-bit version of Windows and “Start Download.”• This download will take the

longest. Let it run in the background.

13. Return to Safari, open a new tab, and go to http://virtualbox.org

14. Click “Downloads” in the left margin.15. Find VirtualBox # for OS X hosts and click “x86/amd64” beside it to download the

installer.

Installing VirtualBox:

1. The disk image for VirtualBox should automatically open in a window on your desktop when the download is complete.• If it does not, double-click the VirtualBox file in

your Safari downloads window.2. Drag a copy of “UserManual.

pdf” to your desktop for your own reference.

3. Double-click “VirtualBox.pkg”• Click “Continue” to go to

Introduction.• If you have multiple users

on your Mac, choose “Install for me only.”

• Click “Continue” to go to Installation Types.

• “Install.”• Enter your username

and password to “Install Software.”

• “Close” once the installation completes.

4. Double click on the shortcut to the Applications folder to find VirtualBox.

5. Drag the icon into your dock for quick access to the program and your virtual machine.

Creating a Virtual Machine (VM):

1. Open VirtualBox.2. Click “New,” in the upper left corner of

the window.3. Name your VM “Windows 10” or

something similar.• The Type should read

“Microsoft Windows.”• The Version should match the

Name followed by “(64 bit).”4. “Continue” to Memory Size.5. Set the memory to 2048 MB.6. “Continue” to Hard Drive.7. “Create a virtual hard drive now.”8. Click “Create.”

• Leave “VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image)” as the default and “Continue.”

• Leave “Dynamically allocated” as the default and “Continue.”

• Leave the default name.• Set the size to 75GB or more.

Windows will occupy 20-25 GB.• Click “Create.”

9. Now your VM will appear in the left margin of VirtualBox.

10. Do not start the VM until the Windows OS installation media has finished downloading

VM Optimizations before Windows Install:

1. Select your VM and click “Settings.”2. Select “System” then “Processor.”

• Increase the number of processors to 2.3. Select “Display” then “Video.”

• Increase the video memory to 128 MB.

Continue only when the Windows download (in the Secure Download Manager window) is 100% complete, and “Done” appears in the green bar as below:

Installing Windows to the VM:

1. Select your VM and click “Settings.”2. Select “Storage.”

• Click the CD icon labelled “Empty.”• Another CD icon appears to the

far right. Click the icon.• Select “Choose a virtual CD/DVD

disk file…”• Navigate to your Downloads

folder, open the Windows 10 folder, and highlight the .iso file (the only file inside that folder).

• Click “Open.”• The name of the “.iso” now

appears next to the first CD icon.• Click “OK.”

3. Select your VM and click the green “Start” arrow in the top menu bar.

4. Windows will begin installation.• Leave the defaults for English as language and US as keyboard layout.

5. Click “Next.”6. “Install now.”7. Enter the product key you recorded on page 1 (or printed) from UVa Software Gateway.

You cannot copy and paste between the Host OS (OS X) and the Guest OS (Windows VM) at this point – you have to type the product key manually.

NOTE: The sample product key in the screenshot at left is NOT valid. Use the product key provided to you.

8. Click “Next.”9. Check “I accept the license terms” and click “Next.”10. Choose “Custom: Install Windows only (advanced).”11. Select “Drive 0 Unallocated Space” and click “Next.”12. Wait for Windows to install – this will take several minutes, and the virtual machine will reboot at least once.

13. When prompted, give your computer a name (no spaces or punctuation) and click “Next.”14. “Use express settings,” when prompted.15. Windows will ask to create a user

account.• Windows will first ask to create

a Microsoft account, but we will create a local account.

• Click “Create a new account.”• Click “Sign in without a

Microsoft account.” This allows you to create a local account.

16. Set your name for the user name.17. There is no need to create a

password for the account. 18. Click “Finish.”19. Windows will finalize the install

and bring you to the desktop.

Running Windows Update

From the Start menu >> Control Panel, run Windows Update until no more critical or important updates from Microsoft are available. This may require you to restart the virtual machine several times until the process is complete.

Run Windows Update repeatedly until you see that no more critical / important updates are available. You can omit any updates labeled as “optional.”

Configuring Windows for Best Use:

1. Open a File Browser and navigate to This PC

2. Right-click CD Drive (D:) and click “Eject” to remove the Windows install disk.

3. From VirtualBox’s options menu at the top of the screen, go to Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD image… to mount the install.

4. Double-click CD Drive (D:) VirtualBox Guest Additions to launch the installer.• Click “Yes” if you see a User

Account Control prompt.• Click “Next.”• Leave the default destination

folder and click “Next.”• Leave the default options and

click “Install.”• Click “Install” when prompted by

Windows Security.• Select “I want to manually restart

later” and click Finish.5. Shut down Windows from within the

virtual machine.• Right-click the Start button and

choose Shut down or sign out, and then click Shut down.

6. From VirtualBox, select your VM and click “Settings.”

7. Select “Shared Folders.”• To the right, click the folder icon with a

green plus.• Click the drop-down menu for “Folder

Path.”• Select “Other…” to open a Finder

window.• Click and highlight your “Downloads”

folder.• Click “Choose.”• VirtualBox will fill in “Folder Path” and

“Folder Name” for you.• Check “Auto-Mount.”

• For “Downloads,” it’s also recommended to check “Read Only” as well so that you do not accidentally save content back to that folder.

• Click “OK.”8. Repeat steps 7a – 7g for adding additional

folders. Do so now for “Documents” and “Box Sync” if you have UVa Box (https://virginia.box.com) setup on your Mac.

9. Start up your VM.10. Return to This PC11. Notice the new category “Network

locations.” These virtual network shares are linked to your user folders in OS X. This way, you can save files to the Mac and have the option of working with them on your Mac or from within Windows. It is highly recommended that you save your work to these locations.

12. Right-click CD Drive (D:) VirtualBox Guest Additions and click “Eject.”

Visual Settings:

The default setting for VirtualBox VMs is called “Scaled Mode.” This puts the Windows VM in a small scaled window, as if it were an individual app in OS X. If you go to “View” in the toolbar, you have two other options, you can switch freely between them at any time the VM is running:1. “Fullscreen” – Maximizes the VM to occupy the

entire screen. Guest Additions will resize the desktop.

2. “Seamless Mode” – Adds the Windows taskbar above the Mac dock and opens Windows programs in separate windows as if they were apps on your Mac.

Installing Windows software on your virtual machine

The Windows-only applications used most often by McIntire students are Microsoft Project and Microsoft Visio. The instructions below guide you through a download of MS Project from UVa Software, and a subsequent installation. Other Windows software from UVa (or other sources) can be installed in a similar fashion.

Obtain the software

1. Open your Windows virtual machine, open a browser, and sign into the UVa Software Gateway (https://virginia.onthehub.com) using NetBadge.

2. Select “More Options,” then “DreamSpark Premium” from the available tabs.

3. Click on Microsoft Project 2016.4. Click on “Add to Cart” for “Microsoft Project Professional 2016 32/64-bit English --

DreamSpark.” (Click OK if you receive a warning about a platform incompatibility.)5. Click checkout, agree to the license terms, and you will encounter a receipt page.

• (Receipts for past orders can be found at “Your Account/Orders” at the top of the page.)• PRINT OR WRITE DOWN the red text, this is a product key you need to activate Project

8. When your browser prompts you to Run or Save, choose Run.• Click “Next” on the Welcome screen.• Choose “I Agree” on the license page, and click Next.• Click Next on the Installation folder screen.• “Close” once the installation completes.

9. Return to the webpage and click “Download .SDX.”10. When your browser prompts you to Open or Save, click Open.11. Choose the 64-bit version of Project Professional 2016, and

click Start Download.12. When the download bar shows “Done,” click Launch.13. Click Yes when prompted by a User Access Control dialog

box.14. Accept the terms of the license agreement, and click

Continue.15. Click Install Now.16. When installation is complete, click Close.17. Launch Project: click Start, All Apps, Microsoft Office

2016, Project 2016.18. On the Activate Office screen, click Enter a product

key instead.• Enter the product key you recorded from UVa

Software and click Install.• Do not use the sample key shown in the

screeenshot below; it is invalid.19. Click Yes when prompted by a User Access Control

dialog box.20. Choose Use Recommended Settings in the “First

things first” and click Accept.
