Installing ANT, JBOSS, and JDK pre‐reqs on Windows 2008 (64‐bit)

Service Pack 1:  Since the original creation of this document SP1 for 8.0 has been published. This release 

contains, on a separate CD, a tool which will automatically install all of the components covered in this 

guide. It is recommened that you download and use the pre‐requisites tool CD for release 8.0 SP1. It is 

available on it's own CD under the BSI product download section of support.ca.com. If using this tool 

follow the instructions on the CD. If not using the tool you can continue below to install the components 

manually. 

Objective: This is a sample walkthrough of an installation of the ANT, JBOSS, and JDK pre‐requisites for 

CA Business Service Insight 8.0 on a Windows 2008 sp2 (64‐bit) platform. 8.0 is the current release of CA 

Business Service Insight at the time of publication and we use the latest supported versions for this 

release. 

Installing: 

First you need to download the current version of Oracle JDK 1.6.*. You can do this from 

www.Oracle.com under the downloads section as shown below. CA Business Service Insight requires the 

32‐bit (or x86) release of the JDK.  

After either clicking on “Run” from the download, or saving it to your local drive and running it from 

there, you get the JDK installation screen. Click next: 

We want to install the defaults. 

We use the default path: 

And now it should be done: 

Now we need to create the JAVA_HOME environment variable and add this to the system PATH. You will 

need this for the CA Business Service Insight install. Be sure you create this as a system environment 

variable and not a user one. JAVA_HOME should point to the directory above the bin folder: 

Next we add this to the PATH system environment variable: 

Now we’re done installing the JDK. You can test this by running java –version from a new CMD prompt: 

Next we need to install ANT. This can be downloaded from the http://ant.apache.org/ website: 

I am using the .zip archive: 

I chose to unzip it to c:\Program Files (x86)\ANT 

NOTE: It has been discovered that having a space in the path to ANT can cause problems. So it is 

recommended that you do NOT use the path shown in this example but instead use a path which 

contains no spaces such as c:\ANT 

Directly under this ANT folder you should have this structure: 

Now we need to add this BIN folder path to the system PATH variable, again this should be apath which 

does not contain spaces, unlike the example here: 

Next, create a new system (not user) environment variable called ANT_HOME and set this equal to the 

ANT path that bin was under. Again in your install the path should contain no spaces: 

This requires that the CLASSPATH environment variable is NOT set. So we verify it has no value from a 

CMD prompt below: 

And now we can verify that we setup ANT properly by running: ant –version 

Now we’re ready to install JBOSS. We can get this from the http://www.jboss.org/ website: 

But I found it easier to google it and get it from sourceforge since it is a direct link and does not require a 

login: 

Just like ANT I’m creating a JBOSS directory under program files (x86) and extracting it there. 

NOTE: Since the writing of this doc it's been found that you should use a path which does NOT contain 

spaces. Rather than the path shown below we recommend c:\JBOSS or a similar path which does not 

contain a space. 

You want the jboss_4.2.3.GA folder to appear directly under the folder you created. 

Now we need to create a JBOSS_HOME system environment variable and point to the jboss‐4.2.3.GA 

folder as shown below. Again, the path should not contain a space: 

Now we can download the jboss remoting component. This can be downloaded from the jboss.org 

website under downloads as shown below: 

IMPORTANT: Scroll down and get the remoting 2.2.3 sp1 version which CA Business Service Insight 

supports, as shown below: 

We extract this to the JBOSS folder as shown below: 

Next create the JBOSS_REMOTING_HOME system environment variable and point to the folder that bin 

is under: 

Now we have remoting installed and can continue to download JBOSS messaging: 

JBOSS messaging can also be downloaded from the jboss.org website as shown below: 

IMPORTANT: As with the other components, make sure you download the supported version as 

documented in the installation guide. In this case messaging 1.4.5 GA. 

Once downloaded, extract it to the JBOSS folder as shown: 

Finally we create the JBOSS_MESSAGING_HOME system environment variable and point it to the 

messaging path as shown here: 

Now, following the installation guide, we must copy jboss‐remoting.jar from the 

%JBOSS_REMOTING_HOME%\lib\ to both: 

%JBOSS_HOME%\client      and 

%JBOSS_HOME%\server\default\lib 

Yes, we want to replace the files that are there now: 

And… 

Now we want to bring up a CMD prompt and CD to the %JBOSS_MESSAGING_HOME%\util  folder and 

run: ant –f release‐admin.xml   as shown below. Be sure you get the output shown: 

Now we can delete the default folder from under jboss‐4.2.3.GA\server as shown: 

And the folder which is currently called “messaging”, we rename to “default”: 

That’s it. We now have ANT, all JBOSS components, and the JDK installed. If you’ve already installed and 

configured Oracle then you’re ready to install CA Business Service Insight 8.0. I hope that you found this 

guide helpful and a useful addition to the installation documentation.
