9500773-01 Printed in the U.S.A. The B&M Magnum Grip Pro Bandit Shifter is a gate pattern type shifter mechanism. It is available in a rear exit cable model only and it is designed for Powerglide transmissions with standard or reverse pattern valve bodies. The B&M Magnum Grip Pro Bandit Shifter features a positive reverse lockout mechanism and a neutral safety switch as required by NHRA and IHRA. Please read the instructions and review the illustrations thoroughly before beginning the installation. IMPORTANT: You must first install the shifter cable and an air slave cylin- der (such as B&M’s #80883 KIT) or electric solenoid onto the shifter before positioning it in your vehicle. This is to insure that you allow for proper clear- ance at the rear of the shifter for these components before you permanently mount the shifter body into the vehicle. Mounting the shifter first without the cable and the air slave cylinder at- tached can cause possible interfer- ence from frame rails or other compo- nents. Poor cable routing and cable binding will result in poor shifter opera- tion. INSTALLING THE SHIFTER CABLE STEP 1. Pull the shifter stick all the way back to the Low gear position, the position furthest from the red reverse lockout release lever. Remove the five countersunk screws from the B&M Magnum Grip Pro Bandit Shifter cover (See Photo #1). STEP 2. Locate the cable attachment pin at the rear of the shifter stick. The pin is visible just under the black shift pattern gate plate. Do not remove the black gate plate (See Photo #2). STEP 3. Fully extend the stamped loop end of the shifter cable #80834 (included in #81045 KIT), (See Photo #3). STEP 4. Insert the extended stamped loop end of the cable through the larg- est access hole in the rear of the shifter body. Slip the stamped loop cable end over the cable attachment pin at the rear of the shifter stick and attach the supplied e-clip to the pin. Check to make sure you have the e-clip firmly and accurately in the locating groove in the pin (See Photo #4). STEP 5. Push the cable anchor tab flush to the rear of the shifter body. Align the 17/64" cable flange hole withthe 9/32" hole in the shifter body. Besure to use the hole directly above thelarge cable access hole (See Photo#5). Install the 1/4" bolt from the out-side of the shifter body through thecable mounting flange until the boltsticks through to the inside of theshifter body. Place the supplied 1/4"washer over the exposed threads onthe inside, then thread on the 1/4" nutand tighten (See Photo #5).

INSTALLING THE NEUTRALSAFETY SWITCH WIRES

STEP 6. The smallest hole in the rearof the shifter body is 13/64", it will serveas the exit for the jacketed neutralsafety switch wires. Since this switchis a breaker that keeps the starter fromengaging until the switch is closed inNeutral or Park, the color of the wiresis not critical. It is only being used tobreak the 12V wire from the starterswitch to the small wire on the startersolenoid. If your wiring is different, follow the instructions that pertain toyour specific wiring layout.STEP 7. With needle nose pliersgently plug the connectors onto theneutral safety switch terminals. Youwill see that the wires are designed tofit the staggered terminals on theswitch. Be careful not to force theconnectors onto the switch terminalsor you will damage the switch. Theseconnectors should slide onto the switchterminals with light pressure (SeePhoto #6). Once the connectors arefirmly in place, feed the loose end ofthe jacketed wires through the 13/64"hole at the rear of the shifter body fromthe inside to the outside. The wires arenow ready to be integrated into yourvehicle wiring harness.

INSTALLING THE B&M AIRSLAVE CYLINDER KIT (#80883)

(OPTIONAL PRODUCT)

STEP 8. Screw the air slave cylinderinto the mounting flange on the shifterbody and tighten the cylinder againstthe flange. Install the jam nut onto theexposed threads of the cylinder andtighten the jam nut. Screw the blackrubber bumper onto the slave cylinder

shaft (use a drop of red LOCTITE ® onthese threads), (See Photo #7). Thereare flats for a 1/4" wrench on the centershaft. These are so you can hold it whileyou tighten the rubber bumper with asmall pair of pliers. Do not hold thecenter shaft anywhere else other thanwhere the designated flats are. It willdamage the shaft surface and willcause the cylinder to stick and possi-bly leak. With the shifter in the High gearposition, extend the rubber bumper/shaftout of the cylinder by hand. There shouldbe approximately .060"-.065" clearance

between the end of the bumper andthe shifter stick. This clearance iscritical to insure that when the airslave activates and shifts the shifterinto the High gear it does not slamthe stick into the stop on the gateplate. If you need to adjust this toobtain the proper clearance, loosenthe jam nut and back the air slavecylinder out to the desired spacingand retighten the jam nut.STEP 9. At this stage the shiftercable, the neutral safety switch andthe air slave cylinder should be in-

cable attachment pin

Page 3: Installation Instructions Magnum Grip Pro Bandit Shifter · (included in #81045 KIT) , (See Photo #3). STEP 4 . Insert the extended stamped loop end of the cable through the larg-est

stalled. Before you proceed with mock-ing up the B&M Magnum Grip ProBandit Shifter in your vehicle, tempo-rarily reinstall the side cover with thecenter screw only. This is to insure thatthe gate plate and the mechanism donot move from the inside of the shifterbody when you are positioning it inyour vehicle. You are now ready tolocate your B&M Magnum Grip ProBandit Shifter in your vehicle. If for any reason the internal shiftermechanism becomes pulled off oraway from the shifter body, makesure to check the spring loadeddetent lever at the front of themechanism. The best way to do thisis to move the stick all the way backto the Low gear position. This willclear the neutral safety switch de-tents away from the actuator on theneutral safety switch. If they arealigned improperly you can easilybreak the switch. Apply light down-ward pressure to the black shiftpattern gate plate while usingneedle nose pliers to rotate thespring loaded detent lever to theleft. You will feel the detent locateitself back into position (See Photo#8).

INSTALLING THE B&M MAGNUMGRIP PRO BANDIT SHIFTER INTO

YOUR VEHICLE

STEP 10. With the driver sitting in thevehicle, find the best location that al-lows the driver full range of motion toeasily work the shifter through the en-tire shift pattern, Park to Low gear.(Read the section on HOW TO OP-ERATE YOUR B&M MAGNUM GRIPPRO BANDIT SHIFTER). The two slot-ted holes at the bottom of the shifterbody are designed for mounting tabsaccess from the chassis. The chassis'tabs should slip up inside the slottedholes. Because the B&M MagnumGrip Pro Bandit Shifter has flushmount hardware and bottom entrymounting, it is possible to tuck it insidethe frame tubes and out of the driver'sleg and arm areas without worry of themounting hardware rubbing the insideof the body panels. (Figure #3 showsthe recommended tab dimensions alongwith a sample drawing of the standard

chassis' tabs position). Be sure whenchoosing your shifter mounting lo-cation you route the shifter cablewhere it can be easily loopedthrough the vehicle without bind-ing or kinking. Most importantly, itis critical not to crush, bind or kinkthe shifter cable as it exits the rearof the shifter body. Poor cable rout-ing will result in improper shifteroperation and potential cable dam-age.STEP 11. The B&M Magnum GripPro Bandit Shifter is designed tobring the cable to the transmissionfrom the front of the transmission usingthe engine mid-plate as the shifter

cable bulk head anchor. The #80323quick disconnect cable extension (in-cluded in #81045 KIT), will completethe shifter cable connection to thetransmissions selector lever. We rec-ommend the B&M Powerglide ProLever #70465 (included in #81045 KIT).If your transmission has a differentselector lever, it must have the cableattachment hole at 2" from the centerlineof the selector shaft. If your vehicledoes not have a full engine mid-plate,then you will have to fabricate a strongcable anchor bracket to work in yourapplication. (Figure #2 provides op-timum cable position). Dimensionsare critical when making your cable

Page 4: Installation Instructions Magnum Grip Pro Bandit Shifter · (included in #81045 KIT) , (See Photo #3). STEP 4 . Insert the extended stamped loop end of the cable through the larg-est

anchor, be accurate.Mounting the cable anchor to thechassis is not recommended. Thecable should always be mounted tothe (engine/transmission) combina-tion. This is important because ifthe (engine/transmission) combina-tion were to move forward or back-ward the cable anchor would stayin the same position. If the cableanchor is attached to the chassis, any movement of the (engine/trans-mission) combination could causethe transmission to accidentally beforced into a different gear. Thiscould result in serious transmissiondamage as well as the possible lossof vehicle control should the ve-hicle be under acceleration or de-celeration.STEP 12. The mounting tab holesmeasure 5 1/2" (center to center). Oncethe shifter location is determined, firmlymount the tabs to the chassis. Themethod of the chassis' tab attachmentis your choice, but welding is preferred. These tabs must be solid to avoid flexand vibration. We recommend thematerial thickness of 3/16". (Figure#3 shows the recommended tabshape and dimensions). With thetabs on the chassis, slip the shifterbody over the top of the tabs. Carefullyremove the single screw that is tempo-rarily holding the cover in place. Makesure that your tabs do not interfere withany of the internal mechanism compo-nents.STEP 13. Install the supplied 5/16" x3/4" countersunk bolts through thecountersunk mounting holes from theoutside of the shifter body and throughthe holes in the chassis' tabs. Frominside of the shifter body, place thesupplied 5/16" nyloc nuts onto thebolts and tighten. This will clamp thechassis' tabs to the shifter body. Besure not to move the internal shiftermechanism or the gate plate while thecover is off.STEP 14. Reinstall the side cover withall five screws and tighten. Once thecover is installed, check to make surethat the shifter operates smoothly withno binding. If the shifter seems to bindcheck to make sure that the reverselockout spring loaded detent lever didnot get pulled out from inside the mecha-

nism (See Photo #8). With needlenose pliers reset the detent while lightlypushing down on the gate plate.

ADJUSTING THE SHIFTER CABLE

STEP 15. Place the shifter into thetrue Neutral position by releasing thereverse lockout. Hand place the selec-tor lever on the transmission into theNeutral position. With both, the shifterand the transmission in the Neutralposition you can begin the final shiftercable attachment.

STEP 16. Remove from the cable endthe 10-32 nut, the two dust seals andone 7/16" jam nut and lock washer.Leave one jam nut and one lockingwasher on the cable. Route the cablethrough the mid plate so that the cableend is pointing towards the back of thecar. Once the cable is through the mid-plate, reinstall the 7/16" lock washerand the jam nut along with the two dustseals. Leave loose for the moment.STEP 17. Screw the 10-32 jam nut allthe way onto the threaded cable end tillit stops. Then thread the #80323 quick

disconnect extension onto the 10-32threaded cable end. Leave the jam nutand the extension loose. Install themale ball pin from the #80323 quickdisconnect onto the B&M Power glidePro Lever selector lever on transmis-sion in the hole marked #2. The ballend should point outward (See Photo#9). Use the two jam nuts on thethreaded end so that one nut is on thefront side of the selector lever bracketand one on the backside. This willallow you to position the male ball pinon the selector lever so that it does notinterfere with the transmission case, the pan, the shield or the chassis (SeeFigure #3).STEP 18. Again, be sure that theshifter and the transmission are both intrue Neutral. Use the 7/16" jam nuts atthe mid-plate to get the line up of themale ball pin on the selector lever andthe female pocket of the quick discon-nect coupler close, then snug themagainst the mid-plate. Use the red 10-32 cable extension to obtain the finalmicro adjustment by slipping the fe-male quick disconnect coupler over theball on the selector lever off and on.Carefully check to make sure that thelever is not being pulled forward orbackward (See Photo #10). As youcheck each gear position, remove thequick disconnect coupler from the se-lector lever ball and shift the shifter andthe transmission separately. Carefullyslip the quick disconnect over the ballat each gear position. This adjustmenttechnique will keep you from damagingthe cable should the adjustment be offslightly. There may be some backlashin the cable when youre checking theadjustment. This is normal. This comesfrom the bending of the cable duringrouting. The more bends, the morebacklash. Keep your bends to a mini-mum for best performance. Do yourbest to find the most neutral adjust-ment. When finished, be sure to tightenall the jam nuts thoroughly. If adjust-ment does not seem accurate, be surethat you have the male ball in theproper #2 hole on the selector lever ofthe transmission. If you are not using aB&M Powerglide Pro Lever the properselector radius is 2" from the center ofthe selector lever shaft.Always start your adjustment pro-

cess with the shifter in Neutral andthe transmission in Neutral. (Do notuse Park to begin adjustment).

HOW TO OPERATE YOUR B&MMAGNUM GRIP PRO BANDIT

SHIFTER

This example of the Magnum GripPro Bandits operation is for usewith the Powerglide transmissionsutilizing a forward pattern valvebody only. The gate plate is thesame for a Powerglide with a re-verse pattern valve body, the only

change is that the Low gear andHigh gear positions switch. Othergate plate patterns are available. The available patterns and theirrespective part numbers are listedat the end of these installation in-structions.From the Park position, squeeze thetrigger to allow the release of Park lockand pull the stick back. The first detentwill be the Reverse position. The sec-ond detent will be Neutral. The reverselockout lever function is between theReverse position and the Neutral posi-

tion. The trigger is not required to pullthe stick back to Low gear from Neu-tral. The third detent will be the Highgear position and the fourth detent willbe the Low gear position. From Low gear, to shift forward to Highgear just push the stick forward, thisgate is accessible without having tosqueeze the trigger. From High gearposition to access Neutral, squeezethe trigger and push the stick forward, this is Neutral for drive around pur-poses. For true Neutral, you mustpush the red reverse lockout lever for-ward. (Do not hold your hand on theshifter stick. The stick will moveforward internally by the springloaded mechanism). Once the lock-out lever is forward and the shifter stickhas automatically clicked forward. Thelockout mechanism will now stay openon its own, with no assistance fromthe driver. At this point the shifter is inthe true Neutral position. To accessReverse from the true Neutral position, simply push the shifter stick forward, without squeezing the trigger. Squeez-ing the trigger will open the next gate, which will be the Park position. If you wish to rearm the reverse lockoutfrom the true Neutral position, pullback slightly on the shifter stick andyou will see the lockout lever snapback into the lock position.
