Club OfficersDistrict 3310

Dear District 3310 club officers,

My warmest congratulations on your installation as 2015-16 Club Officers.

Just as Rotary brings out the best in each of us, so too you, as an officer, will bring out the best in your club. Your passions and strengths will energize your fellow members, which will only increase your club’s effectiveness. As a leader, you have a rare opportunity to motivate others in your club to greater integrity, compassion, and Service Above Self. It is not just a responsibility, but a gift to be able to have such an impact.

Each club officer has a vital role to play in the continued success of Rotary. Dedicated members are the bedrock of our service. During your term, your innovative and committed leadership will be the fuel that powers the Rotarians in your club and the good work they do. Rotary is only as strong and vibrant as its clubs, and local officers are the heart and soul of Rotary.

The work you do this coming year will not only improve Rotary, it will improve you and the world around you. I look forward to the unique ways that you will encourage your fellow members to Be a Gift to the World.

Sincerely,

K.R. Ravindran2015-16 President, Rotary International

6 30th Installation DinnerFor Rotary Year 2015-2016

It is the time of the year again when 35,109 Rotary clubs worldwide are busy making the transition to handover the running of the clubs to the new club officers.

Continuity represents one of the challenges when a club changes its club officers. One of the ways to address this is to have incoming club officers involved with outgoing club officers in most (if not all) of the activities and discussions taking place in the club.

Club members must also be mindful that its club president and officers are elected by them in a general meeting. When the results of the performance of the leaders and officers do not meet the general expectation of the members, it is the responsibility of every member, especially the past presidents, to come forward to assist and guide them accordingly without being overly too assertive.

For a Rotary club to remain vibrant and relevant, its leaders and officers must be enthusiastic, capable, dedicated and committed. But there is only so much that the club leaders and officers can do, the rest depends on the participation of the club members.

Outgoing club president Louis has done a good job. He was a member that blossomed with inspirations and fulfilment after his first engagement in a cataract operations project for the people of Pulau Beruit several years ago. His heart and soul lighted up and the rest is history.

Andre SuhartoDistrict 3310 Governor 2014-2015

Incoming club president Ng Yaw Hua is ever ready to serve because he has been an active Rotarian; not only in the club, but also in the district. His active engagement in many activities beyond the club has proven that he has built up a network of close friends & gained much valuable experiences that will prove to be an asset. His involvement as District Rotary Foundation Stewardship Chairman and his keen habit of always accessing the Rotary website for information has given this man a wealth of Rotary knowledge that can easily match many past presidents.

The Rotary Club of Kuching Central is a vibrant and active club. I am confident the club will continue to grow to greater heights in the new Rotary year.

Helping a person may not necessarily change the world, but it will change the world for that person. Helping others in need is not only a responsibility of life; it is what gives meaning to life.

Now that we have all ‘Light up Rotary’ in the past twelve months, let us work ourselves to eventually ‘Be a Gift to the World’.

Yours in Rotary,

Haji Andre SuhartoRI District 3310 Governor2014-2015

730th Installation DinnerFor Rotary Year 2015-2016

Dear President, Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

My heartiest congratulations on your club’s 30th installation.

30 years of existence of Rotary Club of Kuching Central is very significant and important. Your club has just produced the first District Governor from your club; Tuan Haji Andre Suharto. He has done much to strengthen the Clubs and our District 3310. What a fantastic achievement! I am inspired by his great leadership and am happy to be his successor in this Rotary year 2015-2016.

30 years of friendship. 30 years of weekly meetings. 30 years of service to humanity. 30 years of international camaraderie. 30 years of inspiration for, preparation of, and perspiration in projects after projects after projects. Can you imagine the amount of good work you have done? I truly salute you!

To serve as a Rotarian is to me a real opportunity, a privilege, an honour that cannot be measured with money, neither can I fully describe with words. It is an opportunity for a life of service to humanity; you may be rich, you may be powerful, you may have the ability and desire to serve others; but it is the network and leverage that we have in Rotary that make it possible for us to multiply these capacities a thousand fold. Rotary enables us to reach out beyond boundaries, beyond the limits of our imaginations. It is a privilege, because somebody must care and believe in us enough to invite us and make us members. It is an honor, because the trust placed upon us allows us to lead leaders to serve communities all over the world.

Rotarians are leaders of their own vocations who come together to do good in the world. But to serve as a Club President is an unimaginable opportunity, a privilege, an honour to do even more good in the world.

I admire President Louis Yong, First Lady Mimi Goh and the outgoing board members for having led this beloved club. I believe the year that went by have given you and your able team of Directors, Committee Chairs and members wonderful and meaningful experiences of a life time. I believe you have created ripples that will affect the future for good.

To the Incoming President Ng Yaw Hua, First Lady Kitty Chin, the 2015-2016 Board of Directors and Chairs, our turn has now come. I know the apprehension, the excitement and the unspoken pledges you make to yourselves in your desires to contribute the best you can. The responsibility of the office of President is not small. Neither is the honor that comes with it. You will keep the flag, the noble legacy of your beloved club flying high with your commitment, teamwork and dedication.

It is my request to you as leaders, that you lead your members to participate in activities relevant to your club, vocation, communities and in our world. Through Rotary, we can devote our commitments and dedications towards humanity and make a genuine difference in the lives of others. Our time to serve and shine is now. For most of us, such a great opportunity will never come again!

Rotarians from District 3310 have been sharing Rotary with others in fellowship and service. It is time for us to showcase our District’s achievements. Rotary Club of Kuching Central has done greatly in the areas of Water and Sanitation, Solar Energy, Health care, literacy and Youth Service programs. You all have truly Light Up Rotary and change the lives of others! Please continue to lead the way.

I would like to join hands with you to achieve your goals in 2015-2016, fulfil your purposes as Rotarians and make you an example for future Rotarians and our future generations to emulate.

One year to serve! So little time, so much to give. No gift is too small, my friends. No effort is insignificant. Rotary will always be relevant. Rotarians will always be needed. As Rotarians, together we have so much more to do, to give, to share, to care. As long as Rotary is in your life, you have a role to play; to “Be a gift to the World”.

Enjoy Rotary and love humanity!

Yours sincerely,Philip Chong Mau KiongDistrict 3310 Governor 2015-2016

Rotary year 2014 - 2015 had been an eventful and successful year in our Youth Services program. Our Club, jointly with other Rotary clubs in Kuching, successfully organised one of the biggest RYLA event with more than 200 participating Interactors from all over the District. RYLA is intended to develop qualities of leadership, good citizenship, and personal development among the youth in our communities. We chartered a new Rotaract Club, Rotaract Club of Segi Kuching and a new Interact Club, Interact Club of St. Joseph Private School, during the current year. In total, there are now 5 Interact Clubs and 2 Rotaract Clubs under the sponsorship of Rotary Club of Kuching Central.

Our Club had also in this Rotary year signed a new sister club agreement with Rotary Club of Bandung from D3410, Indonesia, and two friendship clubs arrangements, namely Rotary Club of Tanjung Bungah, Penang and E-club of Singapore. Therefore, our club now has 6 sister clubs and 2 friendship clubs.

As a result of our combined team efforts, Rotary Club of Kuching Central has been blessed with the Rotary International Presidential Award and the District “Commentable Award” for “Local Community Service Project” pertaining to the Melikin Water Supply project.

RCKC is proud to have a long serving dedicated member, PP Kho Ping, who became a major donor to Rotary Foundation this year. And he was also awarded “Club Builder Award” for his consistent efforts in membership recruitment and retention. PP Sylvester Fong received the District 3310 “Vocational Service Award” in recognition of his excellent services to his vocation. Eight members of our Club also received the District 3310 “Outstanding Rotarians” awards. In addition, our Club had also been awarded District 3310 “Outstanding President” and “Best Class President” awards.

We are delighted to highlight that 3 Interact Clubs and Rotary Club of Swinburne chartered by us also won Presidential Citation Awards. Rotaract Club of Swinburne was also awarded District 3310 “Gold Award” for their “Go Bald” project, which financially benefited the Sarawak Children Cancer Society.

Mimi and I feel privileged and honored for this opportunity of sharing and working so closely together with all our Rotarian families and friends in our service to our Club, vocation, communities and our world. It has been an extremely meaningful and fulfilling year for both of us - which we will cherish for the rest of our lives.

We are deeply touched and humbled by our experiences. We would like to thank all our Rotarian families, supporters and friends for their tremendous support and care that we received, which made the Rotary Year 2014-2015 as one of the most fulfilling, enjoyable and productive period in our lives. Special thanks to Immediate Past District Governor Tuan Haji Andre Suharto for his motivation, inspiration, guidance and encouragement extended to me and our club.

Yours in Rotary,

Louis Yong Lin LinPresident 2014 - 2015.

930th Installation DinnerFor Rotary Year 2015-2016

Greetings to my fellow Rotarian friends and Friends of Rotary.

A big thank you to members of RC Kuching Central for putting their confidence in yours truly to lead a most vibrant Rotary Club for Rotary Year 2015-2016. It is my fervent wish to continue the good work that had been carried out by my predecessors and ensure the Club is on same or even better footing at the end of my tenor.

RCKC will carry on with our signature projects of providing clean portable water and basic solar lighting to enhance the living standards of our Sarawak rural indigenous residents through Global Grant and Yayasan Rakyat 1 Malaysia funding. Community based projects to improve the lives of the less fortunate in our Society will continue to be carried out. District events and projects will be fully supported as numerous RCKC members are serving in District Chairs and District Committee member posts. Worked with other Clubs on joint projects to build inter-club relationships. Maintained our Club's well established fellowship and family of Rotary tradition. Our Youths will not be neglected with advanced plans to hold the inaugural iQuiz Sarawak regional competition, a RYLA camp in Kuching and a cultural exchange between our two Rotaract Clubs and a South Korean one.

GUIDING PRINCIPLESThe Object of RotaryThe Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Avenues of ServiceFor years, Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self has been channeled through the Avenues of Service, which form the foundation of club activity.

- Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club. - Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards. Observed each October, Vocational Service Month spotlights Rotary club projects related to this avenue, offering opportunity for clubs and districts to use their professional skills in service projects.- Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.- International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. Rotarians can support International Service by sponsoring a project in another country, seeking international project partners to support projects in their own communities, or by personally volunteering at an international project site. Visit the ProjectLINK database to post a project in need of assistance, find projects to support, or learn about successfully completed projects to replicate.- Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities such as RYLA, Rotaract and Interact, service projects, and creating international understanding with Rotary Youth Exchange.

The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions: Of the things we think, say or do

• Is it the TRUTH? • Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? • Is it FAIR to all concerned? • Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The 4-way TesT

Core EssenceA worldwide network of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant social causes to change lives in communities.

Mission We provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

VisionThe vision of Rotary International is to be the service organization of choice with dynamic, action-oriented clubs whose contributions improve lives in communities worldwide.

RI Strategic Plan• Support and strengthen clubs• Focus and increase humanitarian service• Enhance public image and awareness

Core ValuesRotary International’s core values are service, fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership.

Diversity and RotaryRotary International recognizes the value of diversity within individual clubs. Rotary encourages clubs to assess those in their communities who are eligible for membership, under existing membership guidelines, and to endeavor to include the appropriate range of individuals in their clubs. A club that reflects its community with regard to professional and business classification, gender, age, religion, and ethnicity is a club with the key to its future.

FAMILY OF ROTARYAt a GlanceThe family of Rotary extends beyond individual Rotarians and Rotary clubs to include other service-minded people who help with the organization’s work. Groups such as Rotaract, Interact, and Rotary Community Corps serve side by side with sponsor clubs, using their diverse skills to improve the quality of life in their communities. Below are some of the latest statistics available.

Rotary• Members: 1,210,680• Clubs: 35,109• Districts: 542

Rotary & United NationsRotary and United Nations have a long history of working together and sharing similar visions for a more peaceful world.

In 1942, clubs from 21 nations organized a conference in London to develop a vision for advancing education, science and culture after World War II. That event was a precursor to UNESCO. In 1945, 49 Rotarians went to San Francisco to help draft the UN Charter. Rotary and UN have been close partners ever since, a relationship thats apparent through Polio Plus and work with UN agencies.

Interact (12-18 years old)• Members: 340,000*• Clubs: 12,300 in 133 countries*

Rotary Community Corps(None Rotarians)• Members: 166,000*• Corps: Over 7,500 in 80 countries*

Rotaract (18-30 years old)• Members: 215,000*• Clubs: 8,000 in 167 Countries*

Today, there are only three countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Less than 370 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2014, which is a reduction of more than 99 percent since the 1980s, when the world

saw about 1,000 cases per day. Challenges The polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to prevent, due to factors including geographical isolation, poor public infrastructure, armed conflict and cultural barriers. Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks.

PolioPlus In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rotary has contributed more than $1.3 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $9 billion to the effort.

Global Polio Eradication Initiative The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a public-private partnership that includes Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world.

Rotary’s focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building.

Ensuring Success Every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched two-to-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $35 million a year through 2018. These funds help to provide much-needed operational support, medical personnel, laboratory equipment, and educational materials for health workers and parents. Governments, corporations and private individuals all play a crucial role in funding.

Rotary in Action More than one million Rotary members have donated their time and personal resources to end polio. Every year, hundreds of Rotary members work side-by-side with health workers to vaccinate children in polio-affected countries. Rotarians work with UNICEF and other partners to prepare and distribute mass communication tools to reach people in areas isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. Rotary members also recruit fellow volunteers, assist with transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support.

‘This Close’ Campaign Rotary has a growing roster of public figures and celebrities participating in its “This Close” public awareness campaign, including Bill Gates, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, actress Archie Panjabi, action star Jackie Chan, golf legend Jack Nicklaus and South Korean pop-star Psy. These ambassadors help educate the public about polio through public service announcements, social media and public appearances.

Through the generosity of people like you, Rotary funds sustainable projects that help communities throughout the world address their greatest challenges. Rotary projects yield both immediate and long-term benefits, while multiplying the impact of each gift, strengthening communities, and building world understanding and peace.

Rotary supports projects in six areas of focus:

Peace and conflict prevention/resolution Maternal and child health

Disease prevention and treatment Basic education and literacy

Water and sanitation Economic and community development

Rotary’s top priority remains the eradication of polio. Through PolioPlus, Rotary is a leading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, along with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and more recently the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Rotary has helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children, mobilized public support, and contributed over US$1 billion in the effort. Polio cases have dropped 99 percent since 1988 when the GPEI began.
