install

Will your hardware work?

Most things are compatible - a few are known not to be

Install

• Can be booted from CD directly or from floppy

• Can also install over network via NFS FTP or HTTP

• Can install from disk image on local harddrive

CD Install

• Our install will be from the CD on direct boot

• In some cases you may need to change setup options in CMOS to allow boot from CD first

Insert CD and boot system - your PC should stop at a text mode display asking your install preference

PRESS ENTER to Select Graphical Mode

STOP AT THE FIRST SCREEN

LET'S WALK THROUGH IT

Language Selection

Select English and click Next

You will have an opportunity to select additional languages later

Keyboard

Select the default keyboard (assuming you DO have a 101 key standard keyboard)

"Dead Keys" are compose key sequences that allow foreign characters and things like backspace - H

Suppose I need to change it?

You can run kbdconfig after install to change the keyboard type

Select Mouse

Generic 3 button PS/2 mouse will cover most cases

Select MS Intellimouse if you have a scrolling mouse

Change your mouse?

mouseconfig will allow you to change type after install

Auto

Disk Druid

disk druid

Format should be "YES"

Basic Partition

• /boot at 50 Meg or so

• swap at twice RAM up to 1 Gig

• / for remainder of disk

I wouldn't recommend fewer partitions or less swap

More Partitions

• Advantage of partitions– separates / from user home directories and

programs and files– easier to do backups on partitions

• You can unmount and backup one partition while the rest of the system is online

– prevents overrunning all free space– you can remount somewhere else

Less Partitions

• Disadvantage of partitions– You can run out of space on a partition

while more is available somewhere else– more complex installation– mounting issues

VT5 has additional messages
