Ascend to the highest elevations of the Hill Country, and to Goatfell, an intimate, century-

old former tea estate bungalow in Kandapola, near Nuwara Eliya. With gardens edged by

agapanthus and lawns shaded by whistling pines, the surroundings are dominated by

the Concordia Estate and crisscrossed by tea trails winding up to secret hilltop viewpoints.

From the infinity pool, sweeping 180-degree east-facing views reveal Ragala’s distant

emerald green hills.

Restyled, contemporary interiors promise modern-day comforts, and each bedroom - three

doubles and one twin - has garden access. Gourmet meals using produce from the garden

are served by butlers to the atmospheric dining room or outdoor terrace. Chilly evenings call

for sundowners around a garden fire pit, log fire nightcaps, and hot water bottles tucked

Travel to Demodara in the eastern highlands, near Ella, where a tea estate road leads up to

Nine Skies, a glorious tea bungalow revelling in mountain vistas. The characterful, colonial-era

bungalow consists of five contemporary-styled rooms, spacious living and dining areas and a

terrace with garden, pool and mountain views.

Each of the bedrooms is luxuriously comfortable and perfect for returning to after viewpoint

hikes, waterfall swims, and 500-metre zip line adventures. Butlers provide high-end service,

and meals are cooked in-house by the bungalow’s experienced chef.

Tip – Hop aboard a railway carriage for an awe-inspiring journey along Sri Lanka’s Main Line

Railway to Demodara Railway Station, tunnelling through hills, weaving around tea estates,

Journey south to Fort Bazaar in Galle for heritage and culture within the granite-and-coral

walls of the town’s heady, UNESCO-listed 17th century fort. Located in the heart of the old

town, along Church Street, the fort’s museums, shops, and key landmarks, as well as Galle’s

International Test Cricket Ground, can be reached within a five minute’ walk. A former

merchant’s abode, Fort Bazaar’s fresh styling evokes a mod-Middle Eastern vibe that calls

to mind the fort’s Moorish history.
