Darien: Well, if she liked Japanese culture so much, she would've done her research and would’ve done an accurate portrayal of it. If a Japanese woman did the same performance, or wore the clothes Katy wore, she’d be accused of betraying her culture. Leila: (Shakes head, whining) Well, Katy hasn't been surrounded by the culture her whole life, some facts are bound to be a little off. Darien: (clearly annoyed) All Katy is doing in this performance-- other than horrible vocals-- is perpetuating stereotypes and basically mocking another culture and using it as a decorative item rather than appreciating it. Leila: Um, okayNow lets go take a look at the recent tribal collection from Bianca Garmeaux from Fashion week. *play ending of Perrys song until we are ready* (SWITCH SLIDE)

Script:(SWITCH SLIDE)Kalina: Hi, its Amber and Jessica! Welcome back to the MTV media report! Weve just finished seeing a clip of Bianca Garmeauxs The Wild collection from Paris fashion week.Annika: (smiling brightly) Im so heart eyes right now! That was such an exciting collection, wasn't it Amber?Kalina: I mean, it was all right but it was offensive.Annika: (confused and annoyed) Why was it offensive?Kalina: All of those outfits, with the headdresses, you weren't offended by that at all?Annika: Well I don't see what was wrong with it, its just fashion.Kalina: It's not "just fashion," Jessica, it's a whole culture.Annika: How was it offending to the culture?Kalina: First off, the Native American headdresses. That race of people has been oppressed in our country for a very long time. For us to use their culture and traditional clothes for our benefit is truly disrespectful, it's basically turning a culture into a fashion trend.Annika: I still think theres nothing wrong with that. Kalina: "Nothing wrong with that," girl, are you hearing yourself?!Annika: Yeah, I can. It just came out of my mouth.Kalina: While those headdresses do have magnificent aesthetic, their spiritual, cultural, and aesthetic significance cannot be separated.Annika: Well it doesnt matter it looks bomb af on those models.Kalina: Those celebrities dont take the responsibility to understand that what they do has significance and that they are trendsetters who influence people, like you.Annika: Thats true because I was ready to order one.Kalina: Its a very common problem. (SWITCH SLIDE) Many stars have been seen with this attire. Pharrell Williams for Elle Magazine, Lana Del Rey in her music video Ride, Khloe Kardashain on Instagram, Karli Kloss on the Victoria Secret Fashion Show, and in countless magazines and other fashion shows. (Pictures of all these stars on Promethean Board)Annika: They look so good! (pointing towards pictures on PB) Oh look at her she looks amazing!Kalina: (heavy sigh) That picture is also disrespectful. The totem poles in that picture are from the northwest, those headdresses are from the plains, and those canoes are woodland canoes. Smushing them all together is basically robbing them of their individual cultures and putting them in a blurred category.Annika: You know, I almost wore a headdress to Coachella this year.Kalina: Whats wrong with you? If you knew anything about this- well, obviously you dont-but if you did, you would know only male tribal leaders wear it as something to represent their status and wisdom. And are you a male tribal leader?!Annika: No[Kalina: (mutters)I didnt think so] How do you know all this?Kalina: (matter-o-factly) I went to college. Annika: Oh, um, okay. Lets move on.Kalina: (raises hand to stop her from talking) No, I just want you to understand its wrong, Jessica. They are turned into mascots, for example, the Redskins, its incredibly racist and dehumanizing.Annika: (hurried, anxious) Okay, okay, I get it, but we really need to move on.Kalina: Fine, but well talk about this later. Annika: (flustered) In other news, there was a video caught on cameras at Up-Dog Yoga studio that went viral.Kalina: Lets have a look.(SWITCH SLIDE and play music(skip like 20 sec ahead) by clicking on thing in the corner of slide)

TRANSITION- Move MTV table kind of to the front left side, put certificate, statue, and candle on table. Take out the yoga mats. D and L should already be dressed. K and A need to change fast.Fourth Scene - Yoga ClassNew yoga person: Kalina (wearing a doti and shawl)Instructor: Annika (black leggings, hoodie)Random people: Darien (sweatpants over jeans, hoodie) Leila(same as A)Script:*stop music by clicking on the pause button in the corner of the slide*(Leila, Darien stretching and rolling out mats)Annika: (standing) All right everyone find a spot that feels right to you.Kalina: (walks in late) Sorry, sorry.Annika: (strained face) Someones cutting it close(Kalina sets up mat in back of class)Annika: Hi, whats your name? I dont think Ive seen you before. Beginners usually sit at the front so they can watch me.Kalina: My name is Divya, and Im pretty familiar with yoga. I think Ill be fine.Annika: Well if you need a strap or a block just let me know. (smiling really hard)Kalina: (fake smile and nod) Ok.Annika: All right everyone; sit down on your mats. The first position we will try is the up-dog position. (Everyone starts to stretch)Annika: Everyone is doing great. (Walks to Kalina) Divya, why dont you stretch toward the ceiling in up-dog.Kalina: Oh you mean my vnsanaAnnika: No Up-dog. Dont worry youll learn the terminology soon enough. (Turns to the front of class) Now stand up and move into the warrior position.(Everyone starts to switch positions, Kalina moves slowly)Annika: Divya, you need to pick up the pace. Youre not going to burn any carbs. (Kalina gives a rude look)(everyone is in warrior position)Leila: (looking back) Stop looking at my butt you creep!Kalina: Oh, no no! Im celibate! (covers eyes)Leila: Creep.Annika: Now sit down on the floor, stretch your legs in front of you, flatten your back and try to touch your toes.(Everyone stretching on floor)Annika: (walks over to Kalina) Youre doing great but maybe next time you could wear more appropriate yoga attire, maybe a microtop.Kalina: (pointing at pants) This is a traditional Indian Doti.Annika: (matter-of-factly) Theres a Lululemon down the street.(Everyone continues stretching)Annika: Okay everyone; lets take a water break.(Darien, Leila and Kalina walk to corner of the room to get water bottles)Leila: Im on a juice fast right now.Darien: Oh thats coolKalina: Oh youre fasting? What for? To protest imperialism?Leila: Beach season.Kalina: (furrows brow) Beach seasonAnnika: Okay, everyone come back to your mats. Lets go into criss-cross applesauce.Kalina: (mutters) Criss-cross applesauce(Everyone gets into positions)Annika: Roll your shoulders back and take a deep breath.(Kalina starts chanting under breath)Annika: Lets keep it down; Divya, this is a quiet place for reflection.Kalina: I am pretty sure you were playing Coldplay a minute ago.Annika: (sighs) Continues to take deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth and relax. (Annika gets up to light candle and she bows, Kalina watches and walks over angrily)Kalina: Are you kidding me? This is a Yankee Candle! (Picks up candle) Cinnamon bun!Annika: With all due respect Divya, I am a certified yoga instructor. (Bows to candle again)Kalina: (sarcastic) Oh really? Who was your guru? (Points to certificate on wall) Carl Smith, what an honorable yogi!Annika: You know what (Starts walking away) I think its time for another water break!(Darien, Leila and Kalina walk back to corner of room)Darien: I want to try yogilates.Leila: Oh my god! That is so spiritual!Kalina: (smacks forehead, storms over to table and picks up statue) I will give anyone ten dollars if they know who this is! (looks around) Anyone? No, I didnt think so! (Walks away laughing, turns back to statue) Its Krishna! Seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, learn it!(Storms over to thermostat on wall)Kalina: Why is it so hot in here?Leila: Were doing Bikram yoga.Kalina: (clearly annoyed) Well, in my day, the room was normal, and we didnt sweat our skin off!Darien: You seem stressed. Take a breath (takes a deep breath), and flow your chakras into your hearts center (motions to heart).Kalina: (stares at him) What the f---? You know what, never mind, Im leaving! Curse all of you! (starts to walk out)Whole class: (bows heads) Namaste.Kalina: (sticks head back in and screams) You dont know what that means!TRANSITION- K and A take things off table and take away yoga mats, L and D move table to the middle(SWITCH SLIDE)

Fifth Scene- MTV report- (L and D wearing same thing in first MTV scene)Leila: Thats probably one of the funniest videos Ive ever seen. #lol #imdying. Tweet about the video using the #updogyoga4daysDarien: It was actually pretty funny. Have you been noticing a trend in all these videos?Leila: Not really. All I understand is that someone is always being offended.Darien: Do you understand why people are getting offended?Leila: Um, obviously (its obvious she doesnt know)Darien: The common thing between the videos is theres always a culture being appropriated, sometimes without knowing it.Leila: Yeah, I totally knew that.Darien: Its called culture appropriation. Its when; dominant cultural groups adopt elements of another culture, most commonly an oppressed culture and turn them into their own fashion and other elements.Leila: So... can you teach people to not appropriate?Darien: I dont think it can necessarily be taught. For example if you gravitate towards the culture of India, I dont think anyone should tell you its wrong. Its just important for people to keep in mind the greater social context of what theyre doing-understand if youre white person, the history of English people exploiting and colonizing India before you start to say Namaste.Leila: And that goes for other cultures too, like Native Americans, Japanese, and more, right?Darien: Of course, it goes without saying for all cultures. People must learn to understand and respect them before participating in certain elements of them.Leila: Wow, this is a lot to think about.Darien: Im glad youre getting it. Now, we have one more clip from two youtube stars who tackled this hot topic.Leila: Oh yeah, our most important one, enjoy(SWITCH SLIDE)

TRANSITION- K and A in front of the promethean board, D and L on the sideEveryone wearing black Sixth Scene -Black Culture Scene and final question to the audience

Leila and Darien are on either sides of the stage. Kalina: Hi guys, Welcome to our youtube channel! Im Kali.Annika: And Im Annika, today were going to be discussing the recent hot topic of appropriation of black culture. (pause) In the early 2000s many R&B stars wore corn rows (Leila starts braiding her hair) (SWITCH SLIDE) such as Beyonce and many more. Hip hop and rap are styles of music that African-American communities created in order to affirm their identities and voices.Kalina: As hip-hop became more and more popular it integrated into pop culture. (SWITCH SLIDE) For example Eminem, who received immense success in the hip hop world as his album went four times platinum. Black culture had become popular. (SWITCH SLIDE)Annika: Many people and celebrities started to wear clothing and accessories such as grills that were associated with hip hop.(SWITCH SLIDE)Kalina: The fashion world had started to accept these styles as well. Braids were seen on high fashion runways, and magazines portrayed cornrows as a new urban hairstyle (SWITCH SLIDE)Annika: Riff Raff, a white, suburban middle-class man ironically took on a stereotypical black personality and blaccent for his rap career. Kalina: Pop stars took on black culture as a way of being edgy and getting attention. (SWITCH SLIDE) Miley Cyrus started twerking (Darien dances) and using black women as props. And in Katy Perrys music video This is How We Do, she uses ebonics, hand gestures, and eats watermelon while wearing cornrows.Annika: White rappers were excelling in the hip hop world industry. (SWITCH SLIDE) Macklemore and Ryan Lewis song Thriftshop reached the No.1 spot on the year end chart in 2013. (SWITCH SLIDE) Iggy Azaleas Fancy reached No.1 the following year. (SWITCH SLIDE)Kalina: Recently police brutality against black people came to the forefront. (D and L hold up hands in surrender) People and celebrities protested against institutionalized racism by marching and voicing their opinions on social media.Annika: Celebrities spread awareness and spread condolences. (SWITCH SLIDE) A black female rapper Azealia Banks observed in her tweets that white musicians who partook in hip hop culture and adopted blackness, Iggy Azalea in particular, failed to speak on the racism that comes with black identity. Kalina: She claimed that if one wants to partake in black culture they must be prepared to understand and support the rest of the community. Annika: While cultural appropriation usually results in negative outcomes, good things can come out of it too. (SWITCH SLIDE) (D and L pretend theyre playing guitar) Rock and roll emerged in the 1950s and drew influence from music styles such as R&B, and the twang of blues. Rock and roll grew in great popularity and became a huge hit around the country and even the world. (SWITCH SLIDE)Kalina: The line between cultural appropriation and cultural exchange is always going to be blurred. Appropriation occurs when a style leads to racist generalizations or stereotypes but is deemed as high fashion or cool when the privileged take it for themselves.Annika: Nobody's ever going to stop appropriating; we live in an increasingly global society with an ever-shortening attention span, so different elements of different cultures around the world will go in and out of fashion with a speed thats only increasing. Kalina: Cultural appropriation influences people by presenting the most obvious parts of a culture, making them think those obvious parts are the only thing the culture has to offer.

(We all come up to the front of the stage)(SWITCH SLIDE)

All: What would the world be like if we loved the people as much as we loved their culture?
