Church-Wide Information 2

“It is to such as these that

the kingdom of heaven

belongs”

On December 14, I heard the news out of Newtown,

Connecticut. So close to Christmas, I immediately

thought of the story of the “slaughtering of the

innocents” in Matthew 2 (King Herod’s order that

children age two and younger be killed in the hopes

that such a wide net would catch the child Jesus, the

king foretold in Scripture). Since there is no ex-

trabiblical corroboration of this story most historians

and scholars believe this event never took place. As

Newtown reminds us, however, this story is being

repeated with astonishing frequency. There is, of

course, no one simple solution that will put an end to

such tragic occurrences. But there are things that can

be done that will help make our children safer.

We have a SAFE policy here at Our Savior’s the

goal of which is to protect the children who partici-

pate in Our Savior’s ministries, and we work very

hard in our community to give kids safe places to

spend time and people who care about them. I’ve

also heard from several members lately who would

like to work on the issue of gun violence. On

Monday, February 4 at 7:00 PM in Luther Hall,

there will be a meeting of interested persons to talk

about gun violence in our society and ideas for ad-

dressing it. If this is an issue that is of interest to

you, I hope you will consider meeting with us.

Peace,

Pastor Steve

NEWS FROM THE QUILTERS At the request of several quilters we are expanding

quilting opportunities to include two sessions

on Tuesdays, 10:00 AM & 6:30 PM.

(No sessions on the THIRD Tuesday of each month

because of the Family Table meal.)

We are working on baptismal and other baby quilts

as well as gift quilts of love and comfort. Everyone

is welcomed! If you have questions contact Darlene

at 763-784-0919.

OSLC CARE TEAM

MINISTRY

Our Care Team Ministry touches

lives through simple gestures of

friendship and compassionate

assistance for our members.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

February is the time when love for each other is given

recognition in the form of flowers, cards and candy

hearts. Sometimes we’d just love to have somebody

reach the item on the top shelf for us, or help lift the

mattress so the sheet could be tucked in when making

the bed. Care Team Ministry members would love to

do these “little things” for you. This type of demon-

stration of love is neither fattening like chocolate nor

allergy aggravating like flowers.

Watch for the CTM Recruitment Sunday, March 17,

to learn more about this ministry, or contact a Care

Team leader to join our Care Team Ministry.

CTM leaders are: Helen Paul (763-784-7589),

Loretta Phillips (763-783-0451), or Ruel Carpenter

(763-786-4741) or call the church office.

Care Team Ministry responds, free of charge, to the

non-medical “quality-of-life” needs of individuals and

families of all ages, not routinely fulfilled by existing

social service programs.

REUSE MAKES ECONOMIC

AND ENVIRONMENTAL SENSE!

Want to change up your house for the new year? Have

an old stack of tile or a cabinet you no longer need?

You can find new and like-new materials and supplies

at the ‘ReStore’ reuse store. All items at the store are

donated by organizations and individuals who support

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. Also, donating your

items to the ReStore is smart (a tax deduction), green

(items don’t go into landfills) and benefits society

(sales support Habitat projects). The store is

conveniently located in nearby New Brighton.

Check it out at www.tchabitat.org/restore/.

CALL COMMITTEE NEWS

The committee met on January 9 and reviewed the

Ministry Site Profile (the document the synod uses to

match candidates and openings) and agreed to

forward to the Planning Council for approval and

submission to the Synod. The next step will be to

create questions to ask the candidates. A small group

will generate a list for selection by the whole

committee. We will also be determining the

interviewing protocol. We are on still on target to hit

our deadline.

Pastor for Children, Youth and Family

Call Committee

OSLC-HOLY HAMMERS

-HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Holy Hammers is an ecumenical coalition of 14

churches acting as a major sponsor to Twin Cities

Habitat for Humanity (TCHFH). While TCHFH

would prefer major sponsors to fund the entire cost

($185,000) of building a home, Holy Hammers is

allowed to maintain their major sponsor status while

providing $70,000 in funding. OSLC contributes

$2000 from its Benevolence budget to Holy

Hammers towards the $70,000. This represents

approximately $2.30 per family listed in the OSLC

2010 Guide Book & Directory.

On March 10 and 17, I will be soliciting for

volunteer laborers to help build the 2013 Holy

Hammers Habitat for Humanity house. This will be

the 18th house built by Holy Hammers labor and the

7th house built since OSLC became a full member

of Holy Hammers. I will also be collecting donations

for TCHFH on those days. If each OSLC family

could give an additional, one time, donation of $2.30

we could match the benevolence given by the

church.

Want more information on TCHFH and affordable

housing in the Twin Cities? Attend the Men’s

Ministry breakfast forum in Luther Hall

on February 16. (See the Men’s Ministry article

for more information.)

OSLC ENDOWMENT FOUNDATION NEWS

The Endowment Foundation gives members of Our

Saviors an opportunity to develop relationships with

others by reaching into the community and the

world. We are able to do so by awarding scholarships

and grants to individuals and groups.

We have begun accepting applications. Go to Our

Saviors Website http://web.oursaviorsonline.org/

forms.html or the office to fill out request

form. Funds are dispersed in June.

SUMMER FUN AT LAKE WAPOGASSET

LUTHERAN BIBLE CAMP Brochures are here and registrations are now being

taken for summer camp. Camp offers kids an

numerous worship opportunities, to grow in

relationship with each other and to be transformed

by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

We’ve reserved these dates for our campers (all

grades indicate the grade completed by June 2013):

June 14-16 (Friday evening-Sunday noon)

SEEDS for 2nd and 3rd graders

June 15-21 (Saturday to Friday noon)

TIM TEAM (Teens in Mission for 10th and 11th

graders)

June 16-21 (Sunday afternoon to Friday noon)

WAPO Main site for 4th-9th graders

For much more information check out their web page:

www.campwapo.org or pick up a brochure in the

church office. You can register online if you wish,

but do let us know that you have done so. We need an

accurate list of our campers from OSLC. Friends

from other churches are welcome to register with our

campers.

Registration forms and fees need to be in to Roberta

Dale by Wednesday, March 6. Campers can

participate in the annual plant sale to help raise money

to defray the costs of camp.

This session focuses on the resurrection of Jesus.

FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The G3:28 Ministry Team is planning some events to

heighten our awareness and appreciation of Black

History. There will be adult forums throughout the

month covering different topics related to Black

History. In addition, Andre Koen will be our guest

preacher on February 24. According to Andre’s

business website, he “is an energetic presenter, a

powerful communicator, and a dynamic teacher. There

are many words that describe him. The most

illustrative is ‘Andre, the Enkindled Spirit’.”
