recommender systems

• How do we help build an economy in that space?

• How can the consumer find what he wants among the endless options in the cloud?

• How can a retailer find customers among billions of browsers?

• Right now, recommendation systems are based on blunt instruments: previous purchases or similar products.

• Insight is working on the next generation of filtering systems that will trawl and digest customer reviews and ‘explain’ why a product or service is interesting to an individual.

• The result? Truly relevant matches between people and products; saving time, building consumer confidence and fostering new online economies.

The future of retail is online.

decision analytics

• There is a global push to take cars off the road in our urban areas to reduce carbon emissions, and congestion.

• One of our partners, Carma provide a ride-sharing service, in which they match drivers who have spare seats on real journeys with possible passengers- think online dating for car pooling - but you need many users to make it work.

• The Insight team have shown the company how to optimise their matching in real time, giving better suggestions to users.

• Using this model, and data analytics, they've then shown that there is an imbalance in users in the main markets, and if they could incentivise drivers to be more flexible, many more users would be satisfied.

• The software has been delivered to the company, and is now being evaluated on their systems.

personal sensing

• Personal sensors attached to the body, combined with data analysis that reads sensor signals, are bringing new intelligence to clinical practice.

• The Insight Personal Sensing team is developing sensors that capture continuous signals, painting a far more detailed picture of movement.

• This platform research and its enabling technologies represent a significant advance over traditional analysis techniques.

• The work holds great promise for a wide range of potential users from those recovering from joint replacements to athletes suffering from recurring injuries.

media analytics

• Every year in Ireland between 8 and 11 per cent of our first year university students drop out. It’s a waste of talent and resources.

• At the interface between behavioural psychology and data science, Insight is developing software to keep students in education and improve outcomes.

• Combining machine learning research and psychology, we have created a predictive tool that gives students and tutors individual profiles of student engagement and likely performance in their exams.

• It flags up problems, helps keeps students on track through a form of “course correction” and has real, measurable outcomes:

• 3 per cent improvement in exam results among students in DCU in its first year of deployment.

• Assign a saliency score to each pixel in the image• Generic saliency, faces, centre region, crop to maximize saliency

• Now fully integrated into Irish Times work flow (TRL 9) looking to generalise to other media publishers

Irish Times Image Cropper• Lots of time/effort spent by Irish Times cropping images for

different target media• Develop an algorithm capable of identifying the important region of an image

and cropping it out

linked data

• We have vast reserves of medical data.

• How do we mine them for meaningful evidence, turn it into clinical intelligence, and put it into the hands of doctors and nurses?

• Linked data technology allows systems to ‘understand’ complex questions in natural language, to surface new insights and to propose evidence-based answers.

• Leveraging our Linked Data research at Insight, we are creating new cognitive computing capabilities that offer clinicians rapid access to health-enhancing knowledge.

• This work has the potential to improve outcomes for patients all across the globe.
