Youngsters will trade in their school books to experience the world of work as the University hosts another Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. As another opportunity to help young minds discover the power and possibilities of a good education nears, let’s take a behind-the-scenes look at past years’ events. Lisi Carreno, Executive Director for Talent Acquisition for Human Resources, has served as the program’s coordinator at UM for the past five years.

IU: What is the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day program?

LC: This program is designed to expose children to a typical workday through a hands-on interactive environment. It focuses on showing them the value of their education and provides them an opportunity to clearly outline the necessary steps to reach their career goals and achieve success.

IU: How did you become involved in coordinating the event? What is your role?

LC: I have organized the event for the last five years, however, I have participated as a volunteer since 2001.

IU: What criteria do you consider when developing the activities offered to the children?

LC: We plan activities that are interactive, fun and representative of different areas of study and career paths.

IU: Which activities have the children enjoyed most?

LC: Past activities have involved participation from different schools and departments. Children have created resumes at the Toppel Career Center, participated in wellness activities at the Wellness Center, learned about visual and graphic arts at the School of Communication, and acted as doctors and nurses at the School of Nursing. I recall the latter being one of their favorites.

IU: Describe the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day in three words.

LC: Fun, educational, and eye-opening.

IU: Tell us one fun fact about this day that we may not know.

LC: We always invite a special guest such as University President Shalala, Provost LeBlanc, or Sebastian the Ibis. Our featured guest speaker last year was Jackie Nespral, UM alumna and anchorwoman for WTVJ-Miami.

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day takes place on May 15, 2014 on the Coral Gables, Miller School of Medicine, and RSMAS campuses.

My name is Melanie Watkins and I am a senior cytogenics technologist in the Department of Pathology at the Miller School of Medicine. I first heard about the Week of Well-Being in 2013 from eVeritas, the online newsletter for faculty and staff.

The event sparked my interest because it was the first time the University was offering such an exciting and varied schedule of activities and presentations related to wellness. I worked with my supervisor, who was very accommodating, to ensure that I could attend the events of my choice.

The week truly made a difference in my life. In my insatiable quest to learn new recipes and find healthier ways to cook meals for my family, I attended the live cooking demonstration led by Chef Michelle Bernstein, which was worth the trip through the rain. I also benefited from the sleep presentation led by Dr. Ashwin Mehta. He provided four ideas to help us get a better night’s rest. That same night, I shared the tips with my night-owl daughter and restless husband, and as result, we are all sleeping better. The yoga class was amazing. I have practiced yoga for quite some time now, so the mid-day yoga session provided me with an ideal opportunity to incorporate the practice into my workday. And lastly, attending a financial workshop from Fidelity has made the greatest long-term impact in my life. The representative was friendly and knowledgeable and met with each of us individually. With her help, I increased my voluntary contributions to my retirement account, and my colleagues, who had never contributed through the University’s retirement savings plan, signed up to begin building their nest eggs.

The University’s inaugural Week of Well-Being truly changed my life for the better. I can’t wait to see the event lineup for 2014.

Sincerely,

101112

Flex

ible Work ScheduleA day off every week. We all wish we could have one, but what are we willing to trade for it?

With the return of the University’s Flexible Summer Workweek Program, it’s time to decide if a compressed workweek is the right choice for you. You must carefully consider the pros and cons of working a modified schedule.

Consider the pros • A modified schedule, while preserving full-time income• More time to conduct activities that are normally done

within business hours• A less stressful commute since it may fall outside of usual

rush hour traffic times• Savings in gas and wear-and-tear on your car

Consider the cons

• An ongoing schedule of longer days may be physically and mentally draining

• Less after-work time to complete daily activities• Work-family scheduling conflicts• Child or elder care may be more challenging on extended

work days

If the downside issues are not a concern in your personal circumstances, then flexible workweeks could be a great addition to your work-life management strategy.

David Siqueiros had only been a UM employee for a little over a year as a maintenance mechanic when he was given an opportunity that would enhance his experience at the University. “It ended up becoming a personal goal. I told myself ‘I want to run a 5K this year.’” Siqueiros became a team recruiter for the University of Miami Corporate Run Team in 2012.

The Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run is an annual 5K race/walk coordinated by Team FootWorks, a non-profit organization promoting the goal of lifelong fitness.

As a former U.S. Marine, but a first time marathon participant, Siqueiros used the opportunity to familiarize himself with fellow employees he would not have met otherwise and to push the notion of balancing a physical lifestyle and a full-time job. “It’s a small community, so I walk around to different departments with the trophy and try to encourage everyone, even those who’d rather walk, to join as well. It’s all about self-improvement and it is a good way to dust off the cobwebs and get going.” He also believes that the added benefit of gaining points toward the Well ’Canes Incentives Program will entice new participants to join. Faculty and staff who register for the run and are enrolled in the incentives program receive 250 points toward their incentives goal.

Every year, more than 20,000 participants from local corporations, government agencies, and financial institutions take part in the race in Downtown Miami. “It’s like a concert,” Siqueiros explains, “There is just a very vibrant, electric energy. It’s definitely a great team builder and fun way to network with your colleagues.”

“Saving on my health care always peaks my interest, so I signed up to participate. As a working mother, it’s challenging to find the time to care for myself and this program motivated me to keep my health in check by watching my food intake and remembering to move throughout the day.” – Sidney L.S. JOHN SQUARE, M.B.A.B.S. Sports Administration and Business, ’04

HR Manager, Shared Services

Entering the University of Miami during the summer of 2000, John Square began his journey at UM as a student athlete. As a defensive end for the Miami Hurricanes, Square recorded 29 tackles during the 2001 football season and helped the ’Canes secure that year’s national championship. Since his days on the field, Square has continued to help his fellow ’Canes win big.

From 2004 to 2012, Square worked for the Department of Medical Education supporting the local community with free health clinics, summer programs, and college preparation. John assisted 20 minority students to successfully enter medical schools at universities across the country, including the University of Miami, the University of Florida, and Tulane. His hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed. In 2010, Square earned the highest honor attainable at UM when he was inducted into the Iron Arrow Honor Society for embodying love of alma mater, good character, leadership, scholarship, and humility. Today, John serves more than 800 UM faculty and staff at the Miller School of Medicine as an HR manager, providing subject-matter expertise in talent management, leadership development, performance management, and more.

He lives in Miami with his wife, Shavon, B.S. Biology ’06, and son, John, Jr. In his free time, Square enjoys coaching high school football, high school basketball, and his son’s 7th grade travel basketball team at Westminster Christian School

We asked employees participating in the Well ’Canes Incentives Program to tell us what benefits, besides the $300 cash reward, they have received from the program.

The University of Miami’s annual United Way Campaign is one of the ways in which we demonstrate our deep commitment to the Miami-Dade community. Service to our community is a central part of our mission, and our partnership with the United Way is an opportunity for our faculty, staff, and students to get involved.

Our 2013 campaign was exciting, fun, innovative, and productive; from Sebastian the Ibis being bailed out by generous donations to University leaders being dunked into a tank of water to benefit the United Way. With more than 4,500 faculty and staff generously contributing, we reached our campaign goal and rose over $1 million across all campuses, with the Coral Gables and Marine School campuses raising $549,000 and the Miller School of Medicine, headed by our campaign Co-Chair Dr. Steven F. Falcone, raising $584,400.

UM has supported the United Way for almost 40 years, and our contributions will continue to further the efforts of many community agencies as they impact lives through programs focused on improving education, financial stability, and health.

We look forward to the 2014 TeamUM United Way campaign, chaired by Larry Marbert, the University’s Vice President for Real Estate and Facilities.

in the makingBETTER LEADERSWorkplace Engagement and Development offers free leadership courses to UM faculty and staff. We interviewed Kumarie Hayes, Director of Patient Access at UHealth Connect, about her experience after completing the Developing a Performance Based Culture course.

Kumarie reinforced her knowledge on how to effectively communicate with, train, and coach new employees while learning the concepts of alignment and reward and recognition. This course is designed to assist existing leaders in validating and identifying opportunities for improvement, while providing new leaders with basic skills to develop their team in a performance-based culture. “You are able to network with other leaders and hear about innovative things that they have implemented in their departments,” said Kumarie, who described the sharing of ideas as the most powerful tool she took away from the course.
