organized several social events and helped Adrian with Regalia. New member Sharlene Shore has kindly (and fearlessly?) agreed to take on the role of Membership Officer. We had several meetings to this end and I am confident that Sharlene will take this important realm of club duties to new heights. New member Paul Seguna, who is a wonderful artist, is willing to share his expertise to develop a marketing and branding strategy for the club to improve our visibility, to grow, and to consolidate membership. Paul is planning two fantastic events/prowls (stay tuned – and perhaps an example to follow?) We have so many fantastic members with so many skills and talents in the club! Considering the amount of fantas-tic artists we have in the club, how about organizing a joint exhibition as a special event or as part of JOTI 2020 (perhaps as part of the Friday Reception?)

Happy Halloween Big pic: Happy Halloween! (But stay out of the woods) Small pic: On October 13, 1884, Greenwich was established as the point from which standard times worldwide were measured.

One of my favourite quotes comes from the music video for Jimmy Cliff’s song “I Can See Clearly Now”. Cliff is standing at the top of the ski-jump, rubbing his hands, and saying: “I am feeling very Olympic today. How about you?” This quote always makes me smile and the tune always makes me dance. With regard to seeing more clearly, your board of directors has identified the need for more transparency. To this end, we will publish monthly reports in the Growler detailing what your board is cur-rently working on: action items, items completed, and plans and ideas. And your comments, concerns, and feedback on the contents of these monthly reports are valued. In addition to more transparency, we hope to raise awareness in the membership of opportunities to get involved, to have a say, and to volunteer. This way, the membership is up to date and able to take on man-ageable chunks of otherwise daunting tasks. For exam-ple: a volunteer for MC’ing the gift exchange at the Christmas Party at the University Club in December is needed. There was no prowl in October because no-body, including the President, volunteered to organize it. For the same reason, there will be no general meeting this month. These events, which we all enjoy, do not plan themselves. At the JOTI feedback session, the need for more trans-parency became crystal clear when a member suggested Land Rovers be invited to JOTI 2020…? I almost toppled from my (JOTI) Chair. They were invited in 2018 and 2019, and we even produced flyers and invitations (published on page 19) that were distributed and strategi-cally placed at our sponsors and at the dealership. Last year we also invited distant cousins, the Aston Martins, to participate at JOTI. The reason for extending the invi-tation to Land Rovers is that the firm is Jaguar Land Rov-er, and to Aston Martins the fact that Ian Callum de-signed them. Many of you may also be unaware that the dealership places a letter from JCCV into the glovebox, a welcome package in each Jaguar they sell. This glovebox letter contains an invitation to join JCCV for free for one year (with no membership in JCNA) and harvest all the bene-fits of being a member. The concept was good, but the letter needed tweaking with regard to content and de-sign. You will find the newly designed glovebox letters on pages 19 and 20 in this Growler. The envelopes are vel-lum paper in off-white and charcoal. If you want to see and feel one, you know how to get them ;). Our own wonderful Glenis, who has served as Member-ship Officer for four years, has done a terrific job of wel-coming new members into the club, updating us on num-bers, providing Malcolm with the necessary information for their inclusion in the Growler (hopefully with photos of their cars!), picking up the mail, depositing cheques, serving as our JCNA liaison, and on top of that she has

Though the history of the Jaguar E-Type Low Drag Coupé is murky, with various sources offering conflicting accounts of the car's development, opinions of its looks are anything but mixed. A sleeker, prettier version of the model Enzo Ferrari deemed "the most beautiful car ever made," the Low Drag Coupé is arguably just that, and one Marco Diez was so taken with the car that he decided he'd make one himself. But because only two Low Drag Coupés were ever as-sembled, and by different parties at that, recreating the object of Diez's affection—the car known as "49FXN" for its licence plate—wasn't easy. It took Diez eight years to bring his own E-Type, plated OWL226, even close to the 49FXN car's original specification, but today his car is practically the original's twin. Save for a handful of crea-tive liberties he took during the build, of course. Between Diez's 49FXN muse and his own OWL226, the biggest difference is that the original was a stripped-out, race-ready concept, while Diez's car has no buts about being a street car. Its interior was carefully crafted to be nicer than that of an original E-Type, with proprietary gauges, a custom-machined steering wheel, and a one-off air conditioning setup. Most of it is held together with screws specially machined for this very project, and to (literally) top it all off, there's even a custom roll bar inte-grated into the seats' headrests, to protect occupants in the event that this car ever ends up on its roof. Not that anyone wants it to be on its roof, but Diez's Low Drag Coupé is more than fast enough to end up there if driven by a sufficient idiot (which it hopefully won't be). Its power comes from a 3.8-litre inline-six that mimics 49FXN's unique setup with a ram-air intake that feeds side-draft Weber carburettors. It's built with all the best parts available from British speed shop Crosthwaite and Gardiner and produces 380 horsepower, making it more than a handful in a car that dates from the early 1960s. Diez was proud to unveil OWL226 at Monterey Car Week's most exclusive event: The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. "Unveiling this car at The Quail, A Motorsports Gather-ing was the culmination of nearly a decade's work," Diez said at the show. "This Jaguar E-Type Low Drag Coupé has been a passion project. I believe '49FXN' is the one of most beautiful automobiles ever made, so to take inspi-ration from that and make it my own is a dream come true." From The Drive

Racing legend and Officer of the British Empire Sir Stir-ling Moss celebrated his 90th birthday on Sept. 17, 2019. The British national is considered one of the greatest rac-ing drivers ever due to his success across multiple disci-plines of racing during his 14-year racing career, which spanned from 1948 to 1962. Getting his start in horse racing, Moss defied his father's wish that he become a dentist, and instead used winnings from his horseback performance to purchase a 500cc Cooper in which he won the British Formula 3's 500cc class. In 1950, Moss earned his first international race win at the RAC Tourist Trophy in Northern Ireland behind the wheel of a Jaguar XK120. It would be just one of 212 race wins across 529 races in his career, which encom-passed everything from speed trials to rally, endurance racing, and even Formula 1. Thanks to his 16 Grand Prix wins across seven consecutive seasons, a period in which he never finished a season below third in the points standings, Moss is regarded as the greatest F1 driver never to win a world championship. Sir Stirling’s other successes include victories (and heroic near-victories) at almost countless regional events, plus esteemed international races. He won overall at the Mille Miglia and Sebring (becoming the first non-American to do so), and scored runner-up finishes at the Monte Carlo Rally and Le Mans, winning his class in the latter. He likely would've continued to race had it not been for a crash in 1962 that sent him into a coma, and temporarily paralyzed half of his body. His racing form never fully re-covered, and Sir Stirling retired from full-time racing, mak-ing occasional appearances until 2011 when he called it quits on racing altogether at the age of 81. Declining health has since forced Sir Stirling to discontinue making public appearances, though public figure or not, we imag-ine Sir Stirling's 90th birthday celebration will be a special one. Happy 90th, Sir Stirling, and cheers to at least another 10 more years.

Seeking Storage for Club Assets

Over the 15 years, your Club has acquired quite a few items in support of our events: porta-ble tents, a few dozen chairs, tables, slalom gear, helmets,

flags, signage, along with a va-riety of other assets that com-plement Club operations. Your Board has recently completed a thorough review and inventory of Club assets; having done so, we're hoping to find accommo-

dation. Might you have ac-cess to storage, that you could

share with the Club? We're seeking a readily accessible 6'

square locker or corner of a garage: clean, dry, insect-free, secure, and accessible. If you have some space that meets

these requirements, please con-tact Peter Rowand (250-686-6312, [email protected]).

Your assistance is appreciated!

“We need to talk about Jaguar Land Rover.” That's the message from Sanford C. Bernstein analysts, who say BMW Group should buy the British luxury brand from India's Tata Motors. "BMW is overcapitalized and awash with cash. It has run into the limits of growth for its product range and brand," analysts including Max Warburton wrote in a research note Wednesday. "JLR is severely challenged, both operationally and finan-cially, but could massively lower both its fixed and varia-ble costs under the wing of a bigger partner." The suggestion comes as Tata Motors' losses mount, with a sales slowdown in China and Brexit adding to its woes. BMW is also navigating trade tensions between the U.S. and China that have weighed on profit, and the unre-solved political future of the U.K., where it makes Mini and Rolls-Royce cars. Buying JLR for $11.2 billion could add 20 percent to BMW's earnings, according to Bernstein. It would also contribute almost a quarter to BMW's volumes, but "Tata would need to swallow its pride to sell," the analysts said. They also said the German automaker would have to be less conservative. A deal would be "emotionally complex" due to their former relationship, when BMW owned Land Rover and the wid-er Rover group in the 1990s, Warburton and his col-leagues wrote. "It was a traumatic period for the Bavarian company and there are executives in Munich who are still emotionally scarred by the experience." Still, the logic for an acquisition is compelling, they said. BMW is working through a $14 billion savings plan and JLR is undergoing a 2.5 billion-pound ($3.1 billion) sav-ings program and cutting 4,500 jobs. The two already agreed to collaborate on their next generation of electric cars earlier this year. BMW has previously ruled out equity ties with the unit of Tata Motors. A representative for BMW in India said Wednesday that the company does not comment on speculation, while Tata Motors did not immediately respond to an email seeking comments. Tata Group bought JLR from Ford in 2008 for $2.3 billion. The Indian salt-to-software conglomerate has been ex-ploring strategic options for JLR, including a potential stake sale, people familiar with the matter have said. Tata Group has denied that. Jaguar Land Rover understands that driving can be stressful. Traffic, construction, annoying passengers, whatever it is you’re late for — it can all add up to an un-pleasant experience behind the wheel. In fact, as the British automaker points out in a recent press release, reports indicate that 74 per cent of people admit to feeling some form of stress every day. That’s why it has been developing a “mood-detection sys-tem” that uses AI-powered tech to track facial expressions and implement subtle changes to help restore some tran-quility to the driving experience. Here’s how it works: A driver-facing camera and biometric sensors function in tandem with software that interprets facial expressions to communicate a driver’s current mood to the car’s central system, which can then make potentially mood-boosting adjustments. The system might adjust the ambient lighting and emit some calming colours if it detects you screaming in rage at the person you’re tailgating. Or it might lower the cabin temperature or play your favourite pump-up songs if it detects you’re getting tired. All the while, the system’s AI is working to interpret the nuances and changes in facial expressions and in the driver’s preferences, allowing it to make “increasingly tai-lored adjustment.” And it’s not just concerned with the driver, either. JLR has stuffed the tech into the headrests and aimed it at rear passengers, hoping to help tired travellers catch some zzz’s en route by automatically tinting windows, dimming lights and raising rear-seat temperatures. No word yet on when/if it’ll find its way into cars that we can drive, but the brand promises this is “the next-generation of Jaguar Land Rover’s existing driver-tracking technology.” Sounds lovely in theory. But be warned, if you’re the type of person who gets irate when your passengers adjust the temperature or change the radio station without asking, this might not be for you. From Driving.ca

India Today is reporting a story involving a seemingly somewhat dysfunctional family. The family lives in a place called Yamunanagar in Haryana state in northern India.

For his birthday, his parents bought their son a new 3 Se-ries BMW. The young gentleman (quite understandably) really, really wanted a Jaguar instead, so in a fit of pique he drove the BMW into the local river. The car was ulti-mately fished out by a crane, but having been completely submerged, might no longer be a going concern. So the poor lad now has no Jaguar, no BMW and probably no more lavish birthday presents from doting parents.

***************************************************************** And more Jaguar-BMW news: Jaguar Land Rover's partnership with BMW seems to be getting more expansive. Autocar reports that both au-tomakers could share architectures for future vehicles, with Jaguar potentially using BMW's FAAR platform for small SUVs. That platform can underpin gas-only vehi-cles, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and all-electric models. BMW's latest front-drive platform could underpin the next generation X1 and Mini Countryman, both of which currently utilize the UKL architecture. In addition to a standard small crossover, Jaguar is also planning a sec-ond model that could use the BMW FAAR platform: a swoopy coupe-like crossover, says Autocar. Neither up-coming Jaguar model has a name yet. The next genera-tion Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque could also move to the FAAR architecture. Addi-tionally, a new entry-level Land Rover that could revive the Freelander name is tipped to be in the cards. Earlier this year, BMW and Jaguar Land Rover an-nounced a partnership for electrified powertrains. But that appears to be just the tip of the iceberg. The partnership also appears to include BMW sharing internal combustion engines with Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. According to Autocar's sources, sharing powertrains with BMW will help minimize the costs of Jaguar Land Rover's own Inge-nium engine lineup. The money saved would then be allo-cated to Jaguar Land Rover's electrification, connected car, and autonomous vehicle projects, which will appear in future models. Gaining access to BMW's FAAR platform would give Jaguar Land Rover a modern front-drive-based platform. The current front-drive platform used in the Jaguar E-Pace and Range Rover Evoque dates back to 2012. Both vehicles in that platform are quite heavy for their size; the E-Pace P300 R-Dynamic HSE we tested last year weighed in at a whopping 4,248 pounds. From Autocar via Motor Trend

Although sedan sales at Jaguar sedans have fallen be-hind its crossovers, the brand will continue to offer these more conventional body styles. Julian Thomson, Jaguar's new chief designer, told Auto-car the "world’s not all turning SUV and we will need cars". According to the man who recently replaced Ian Callum, Jaguar won't become a brand with just crossovers in the forecourt, stating "we will do cars in the future, too". Thomson explained the company now has "lots of compe-tent SUVs in our showroom", but also needs to satisfy "all customers" with a selection of different drivetrains and body styles. Jaguar has already confirmed it will launch a new genera-tion of its flagship XJ sedan next year, with the next-generation car set to be a pure electric vehicle. Reports indicate the new XJ will be built on the compa-ny's new modular platform, which supports conventional petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrids, and all-electric drivetrains. The smaller XE, which recently received a facelift, and the XF, which will soon get one, are further away from a full redesign. Thomson hinted these models could be in line for a dramatic reimagining when their time comes. He also reiterated the company's commitment to having a sports car in its range as it serves as an aspirational goal and are important "flag waving for a premium brand". Our spy photographers have photographed an updated F-Type sporting a new XE/XF-inspired face. For the next generation model Thomson says the "jury is still out" on whether the F-Type will go electric or stick with an internal combustion engine. I f you dream of securing the Fastest Time of the Day at next year’s JOTI slalom, a car is coming up for sale that just might do the trick for you.

Want to own one of the most significant race cars on the planet? You'll soon get the chance: Michael Schumach-er's V-10-powered Ferrari F2002 Formula 1 car, which he used to secure his fifth driver's title, is coming up for auc-tion via RM Sotheby's in November 2019. This F2002 is chassis #219, the car Schumacher drove to victory at the 2002 San Marino, Austrian, and French Grands Prix. He secured his fifth title at the French GP with six races to go in the 2002 season. No other driver has secured an F1 championship so quickly. After Ferrari secured the 2002 constructor's title at Hockenheim later in the season, chassis #219 was relegated to testing du-ties, then retired at the end of the year. Following its retirement, the car passed through several "significant private collections across multiple continents," according to RM Sotheby's. It will come up for sale on November 30th at an RM Sotheby's auction coinciding with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend. A percentage of the proceeds will donated to the Keep Fighting Founda-tion, a charity founded by Schumacher's family following the driver's serious head injury suffered during a Decem-ber 2013 skiing accident. RM Sotheby's doesn't list an estimated sale price on its site, though if it does as well as Schumacher's 2001 championship-winning car sold in 2017, expect it to go for somewhere north of $7 million.

It’s Showtime! Jaguar Land Rover is investing in what it thinks could be the next step in safety technology: a 3D virtual reality heads-up display, one that does much more than just show your speedometer on the windshield. The technology is part of JLR’s ‘Smart Cabin’ vision, which seeks to create a personalized space inside the vehicle for driver and passenger. The technology is essentially a heads-up display that can project an augmented reality (AR) version of the road in front of you, helping to aid in navigation, display safety alerts and detect hazards. In partnership with the Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics (CAPE) at University of Cambridge, the research is focused on developing an immersive head-up display that will closely match real-life experience. JLR says that research done in Germany with the same type of stereoscopic 3D display has improved reaction times and depth judgments for drivers, which will make it much easier to drive safely in weather conditions with poor visibility or decreased grip. Seems like properly futuristic stuff, and it doesn’t stop there. “In the future, the innovative technology could be used by passengers to watch 3D movies. Head and eye-tracking technology would follow the user’s position to ensure they can see 3D pictures without the need for individual screens or shutter glasses worn at the cine-ma.” JLR also says this technology will benefit the inevitable fully-autonomous future, and offer a more interesting experience for ride-sharing users with journey details, movies, or points of interest.

W e all know that Jaguar is fearless in challeng-ing the might of its motoring competition, but now the company is taking its fight to the august Oxford English Dictionary. The online OED defines “car” as: “A road ve-hicle powered by a motor (usually an internal combustion engine) designed to carry a driver and a small number of passengers, and usually having two front and two rear wheels, esp. for private, commercial, or leisure use.” The current definition of a “car” on OxfordDictionaries .com, a collection of dictionary websites produced by Oxford University Press, the publishing house of the University of Oxford, is: “A road vehicle, typically with four wheels, powered by an internal combustion engine and able to carry a small number of people.” To remedy the situation, Jaguar has submitted a formal application to the Oxford English Dictionary and Ox-fordDictionaries.com to have the definitions updated to include additional powertrains, including electric vehicles. Jaguar Land Rover has an interest in driving the change, having launched its first all-electric vehicle – the I-Pace – last year. David Browne, head of Jaguar Land Rover’s naming committee, said: “A lot of time and thought is put into the name of any new vehicle or technology to ensure it is consumer friendly, so it’s surprising to see that the defini-tion of the car is a little outdated. We are therefore invit-ing the Oxford English Dictionary and the Oxford Diction-aries to update its online classification to reflect the shift from traditional internal combustion engines towards more sustainable powertrains.” While both the Oxford English Dictionary and Oxford Dic-tionaries review the application, Jaguar is encouraging people to get behind the campaign by asking how the word ‘car’ should be defined. Contact Jaguar on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using #RedefineTheCar with your thoughts. Mostly from the Yorkshire Post

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a part of Tata Motors, has reported a 5 per cent increase in total sales at 37,945 units in July as compared with year-ago period. Sales of Jaguar brand were at 11,386 units during the month, up 3.6 per cent from the same month last year, Tata Motors said in a regulatory filing. Land Rover sales were at 26,559 units, up 5.6 per cent from the same month last year, it added. "July saw good retail sales growth in the UK, where we continued to outperform the overall industry trend, and the US, with the highest July sales on record for Jaguar Land Rover," JLR Chief Commercial Officer Felix Brautigam said. Results in China were significantly better than the previ-ous year, thanks to the company's proactive work with the retailer network, he added From The Economic Times (India) *****************************************************************

One of the most iconic cars from Bentley’s history – Sir Tim Birkin’s 1929 supercharged 4½-litre “Blower” – is to be reborn with a new build of 12 matching cars, each indi-vidually handcrafted by a team of specialists from Bent-ley’s bespoking and coachwork division, Mulliner. Togeth-er, the new cars will form the world’s first pre-war race car continuation series. Only four original ‘Team Blowers’ were built for racing by Birkin, in the late 1920s. All were campaigned on the racetracks of Europe, with the most famous car – Birkin’s own Team Car No. 2, registration UU 5872 – racing at Le Mans and playing a pivotal role in the factory Bentley Speed Six victory in 1930. Now, using a combination of generations of handcrafts-manship skills and the very latest digital technology, the 1929 Team Blower will be the master example for 12 con-tinuations - one for each race that the original fleet of four Team Blowers competed in. JCCV BITS & BYTES Two items from our Regional Director,

Carole Borgens

I don't recall if I advised that JCCV mem-bers should be aware there will be no ballot in the upcoming Jaguar Journal, as all Region Directors whose terms are expiring have agreed to stay on for an additional term. On that basis, JCNA opted to not spend money to print and include a ballot, given no incumbent director was challenged for their position, thereby no vote required. The business of strategic planning for future is ongo-ing. We have the fourth in a series of WebEx meetings Monday evening to continue developing ideas into plans and tools for clubs to use to support membership growth, event management, judges guidelines, and so much more. I will report when the research and compilation of offerings is complete.

Carole

JCCV members who read Jaguar Journal, and particular-ly the recent issue's Northwest Region Report, will have noticed that your President, Telse, has taken charge of the Vancouver based CXKJR/CCMGC, and further has allowed the Seattle club president, Kurt, to take over JCCV. Confused? Early or late April Fools? No, but Gremlins in the Typesetting Department - yes. This Northwest report was compiled from submissions by four club representatives. Somewhere between my desk and the editing process in New England, the change took place and people switched roles. It's my understanding they have agreed to resume their respective positions, and the status quo is restored. While we know Telse could manage two clubs simultane-ously, she had to decide between that honour and main-taining an agreeable sailing schedule. The sails won. Thanks Telse for your understanding and good humour.

N ational Name Your Car Day falls in October, on the second, to be precise.

National Name Your Car Day on October 2nd encourages a special commitment to your wheels. It’s time to give your trusty automobile what it really needs, a name. Many of you most likely remember Herbie the Love Bug, Lightning McQueen from Cars, Kit from Knight Rider, General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard and Bandit from Smokey and the Bandit. These are just some of the famous car names that are known by millions of people. Make a day of it. Take the ol’ jalopy out for a spin, a nice wash, and shine and then just maybe you will select a signature meant for one so reliable. After all, you spend all that time together and take such good care of each other, isn’t it time to give those four wheels a name? From nationaldaycalendar.com ***************************************************************** The owner of this insanely unique car is Datuk Seri Ma-hadi Badrul Zaman of Malaysia.. He is an avid fan of min-iature and model cars, especially Hot Wheels cars.

Because he had so many cars, he decided to display his collection in the most creative way possible, which was to cover his Jaguar S-Type completely in these little cars. Cross-dressers in our club might find this interesting: Jag Queens: Jaguar teams up with

drag acts for charity Jaguar has partnered up with Attitude magazine to launch an online mini-series with ‘the world’s most fabulous drag queens’. The aim is to raise funds for LGBTQ+ charities. The ‘Jag Queens’ will be going head to head, racing Jag-uar I-Pace SUVs. The first face-off, between Courtney Act, star of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and The Vivienne, has already taken place. The contestants are racing a quarter-mile for the top prize of £10,000 for their chosen charity. Everyone’s a winner, though – the runner-up will be get £6,000, while the re-maining contestants will each receive £2,000.

A Prediction…… (By the Rand Corporation, in 1994) “The RAND panel mentioned that by the year 2020 it may be possible to breed intelligent species of animals, such as apes, that will be capable of performing manual la-bor,” Glenn T. Seaborg wrote of the corporation’s predic-tion in his book Scientist Speaks Out. “During the 21st century, those houses that don’t have a robot in the broom closet could have a live-in ape to do the cleaning and gardening chores. Also, the use of well-trained apes as family chauffeurs might decrease the number of auto-mobile accidents.”

Brian Mansfield sent this picture to Telse, questioning whether the car beside which he stood many years ago with his father, was a SS100. Telse forwarded the re-quest to Gregory, who replied: "An interesting photo – but this is not an SS100 - the windscreen mounting is the clue. The SS100 had a fully chromed framed attached to the body by screws and also much larger headlamps. This photo is of a 1934-36 SS 2 Four Light Saloon (note the rounded bottom cor-ners of the windscreen set into the body). The engine was a 6 cylinder side valve. This car was replaced in 1936 by the larger (and more beautiful) SS Jaguar 1.5 and 2.5 litre saloons.” And this is Brian’s response: Gregory: Thank you very much for your email and the information regarding my Dad’s Jaguar. Let me quickly add my apol-ogies for not responding sooner. We had a small plumb-ing crisis at our house and it took most of my attention for a day or two. Thankfully all is well on that score. I am indebted to you for all the information. The years you noted – 1934-36 are bang on. I was born in Bristol in 1940 and we lived there until 1948. We lived in a sub-division called Patchway which is next door to the Bristol Aeroplane Company where Dad worked. No one could afford a car during the war and I think Dad bought this one around the same time the photo was taken. The car

was light blue in colour and had a navy blue leather inte-rior. I wonder what such a car would be worth today. We left England in 1948 and moved to the United States. Dad was convinced that his future lay there, par-ticularly, because of the booming post-war economy and the American commitment to military spending. Unfortu-nately, Dad miscalculated badly because he landed at the early beginnings of McCarthyism and, as Joe McCar-thy would rant, if I may paraphrase, “anyone who was not born in America must be a communist”. We ended up moving to Canada where Dad got back into the aircraft industry with a company that was part of the Avro Group which was developing the Avro Arrow. This was a very successful move until Mr Diefenbaker pulled the plug. After that his company found other non-aircraft business but things were never quite the same. Dad had quite a passion for the Jaguar marque. In or around 1965 he bought a 1959 XK150, a two seater con-vertible. The car was white with a red leather interior. It was his pride and joy. I think I got to drive it once. Oh, what memories that brings back. Gregory, I’m sorry to bore you with all this personal infor-mation. Please put it down to an old man reminiscing. I will be sending your information along to my sister who lives in Baltimore. She was not born when the photo was taken but, like me, has often wondered about the make and model of the car. Now we both know. Thank you so much to you and Telse for your kindness. It is greatly appreciated. Brian Mansfield *****************************************************************

Some bad news. In their infinite wisdom, the North Cowi-chan councillors have recently voted 5-2 to ban the ex-pansion of the Vancouver Island Motorsports Circuit. The links below, the first to the Cowichan Valley Citizen, the second to the Times Colonist, spell out the sad story. https://www.cowichanvalleycitizen.com › news › north-cowichan-says-no-t… https://www.timescolonist.com › news › local › north-cowichan-council-rej Interestingly, the majority of the presentations at the hear-ings favoured the expansion, so we must hope that the GAIN Group will persevere and ultimately find a way to proceed with the project. So if we want to put our Island on the world’s motorsport map, it might behoove us to offer what support we can to the GAIN Group. Short of buying a BMW or Mercedes instead of a Jaguar, of course!

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS ! Don’t forget

to mention that you saw their ad in “The Island Growler”.

An electrifying proposal….. Are you traveling to Germany any time soon to visit the Nurburgring? Do you have $164 burning a hole in your pocket? Does Jaguar have a deal for you! As a new op-tion in the popular “racing taxi” service offered at the famed track you can ride along on a hot lap in the I-Pace electric crossover. Jaguar has been making a push in Germany to carve into Mercedes Benz’s stranglehold on the taxi business, pre-viously with the SE model and now with the I-Pace. In 2018, the company started the “racing taxi” at the famed Nurburgring in their XE SV V8 model. That experience comes at a higher price of $278. Both opportunities pair you with an experienced racing driver, however, no names are mentioned. There are some restrictions involved with riding along in the Jaguar. Occupants cannot weigh more than 265 pounds, be taller than six feet, six inches, and must be at least 18 years old. Also of note, the I-Pace can have up to three passengers aboard while the V8 ride is only out-fitted for one passenger. The I-Pace will not be a slouch around the circuit, a stock I-Pace features 395 horsepow-er and 513 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar claims it can do zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Jaguar has a racing heritage, and with that in mind the I-Pace will be no stranger to the race track. The Jaguar I-Pace etrophy has been announced as a support race series for FIA Formula E. The series will take place ahead of 10 rounds of the Formula E Championship in eight global cities. Twenty teams will compete for a prize fund in excess of 500,000 pounds (about $638,000). The Nurburgring was constructed starting in September of 1925 and completed in 1927. The 12.9-mile track fea-tures 73 turns and its demanding nature earned it the nickname of “The Green Hell.” Amazing motorsport ex-ploits made household names of Tazio Nuvolari and Bernd Rosemeyer. Although no Formula One cars have traveled the long course since before World War II, the long course is still the playground of manufacturers, mil-lionaires, and automotive motoring enthusiasts from around the globe. Now, thanks to Jaguar, you can travel in the tire tracks of legends without risking your car.

The latest from Tata: Jaguar Land Rover is not for sale

-but it does want a partner Despite rumours that Tata are looking to sell Jaguar Land Rover, what they’re actually looking for is a partner to make them viable for the future. We know Jaguar Land Rover is going through some tough times after a decade of impressive success since Tata took the reins from Ford. A combination of huge sales drops in China, reliability and quality issues, the demonisation of diesel, big model overlaps, Brexit uncertainty and, perhaps, too much hu-bris, has seen JLR go from being a real revenue genera-tor for Tata to a bit of a liability. That has led to claims that Tata wants to flog JLR to es-cape the grief, but according to Natarajan Chandrasekar-an, Chairman of Tata and Sons, that is definitely not the case. Although he does concede help is needed at JLR. Chandrasekaran said that Tata won’t sell a share in JLR, but what they are seeking is a partner to make it easier to move forward with big investments in new models and electrification, especially as Tata itself has big problems with steel and their own automotive division. Recently, analysts have declared that BMW is in a prime position to bail out JLR, and with an already growing partnership between JLR and BMW, from engines to EV development, that makes perfect sense. Although whether BMW will be satisfied with just a part-nership with JLR is open to debate, but the wider sharing of technology and development between the two would be advantageous for both, and potentially life-saving for JLR. A Russian website, Kolesa, has released renderings of what it believes will be the next generation all-electric XJ.

It is assumed that the new XJ won’t look radically different than its predecessor, and if that is indeed the case, then these renderings could actually give us a good idea of how the new Jag may look. Underpinning the new XJ will be Jaguar’s Modular Longi-tudinal Architecture, which is expected to feature a 90.2 kWh battery pack that’s good for up to 292 miles (470 km) of range. This platform also supports individual electric motors for each wheel, so it’s possible the XJ will launch with such a setup, most likely sometime next year.
