Imagine you are eating dinner at a restaurant, and

suddenly, you feel your food slip into the back of your throat and you begin to choke. You try to get people’s attention around you, but no one seems to see you at all. You feel powerless, alone, and invisible in a situation where you need others.

When disability is com-pletely invisible to those not experiencing it, finding ways to overcome it can become much more challenging. Fibromy-algia, chronic fatigue, Crohn’s disease, and bipolar disorder are just some invisible disabilities that many people live with every day. They can be just as serious as visible disabilities but they aren’t as well-known, or perhaps just aren’t as easy for people to understand.

Last year, NPR published an article highlighting the fight for

a better understanding of invis-ible disabilities*. According to the article, no one really knows just how many people live with invisible disabilities, but “it’s es-timated there are millions.” The woman highlighted in the article has been living with fibromyal-gia and Crohn’s disease. For her, every day activities, like groom-ing for the day, can be exhaust-ing.

<< Continued from pg. 1 work place. According to the article, employers often resist requests for accommodations when the disability of an employee isn’t obvious to the eye. However, under law, those with disabilities are entitled to work place accommodations.

The more people talk openly about the unique challenges of their invisible disabilities, and the more people are educated about them, the more

understanding will continue to grow. Even if they are hidden challenges, it only takes repeated ex-posure for others to start to see what was there all along.

Debbie Ott and Echo

Echo is a four-year-old Pug/Corgi Mix. She loves kids and enjoys being read to at the Price City Library. She has some special talents which include doing tricks for peanuts and singing! She loves to go four wheeling with her Mom and Dad, but is happiest putting on her scarf to go visit kids at the library, or march in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Echo and Debbie have been volunteering for P.A.W.S since March, 2014.

Aubrie Carpenter and Sophie

Sophie is an eight-year-old Golden Retriever and she and Aubrie have been volunteering with the P.A.W.S. program since September of 2013. Parkdale Care Center is “her place” and the residents there look forward to her visits. Sophie loves to run with her Mom and play with her family. She almost never misses her weekly visits to the Price City Library Summer Reading Program to listen patiently to budding readers.

This summer, the Uintah Basin

consumers enjoyed a variety of support group activities. For one, they teamed up with USU Extension to plant salad

boxes. Big “thank you” to the Staff of USU Ex-tension for all their help and for providing the boxes, soil and seeds, for the project!

For another activ-

ity, consumers visited Regional History Cen-ter, where they learned about their region’s history and preserva-tion, as well as how the Center works with the community to aid these efforts locally.

The support group participants were also able to enjoy another activity day at Split Mountain recreation

area followed by a pot luck lunch. They learned about the his-tory of the gas compa-nies and pipe lines, and made friends along the way too.

Moab Summer Activities

Vernal / Roosevelt Enjoy Support Group Activities

Active Re-Entry, Moab has been

busy exploring their sur-roundings this summer.

In June, they took a ride down to Hoven-weep to view the Indian ruins, followed by a potluck picnic and an educational session with a ranger. On their way home, they stopped by the fascinating Lowrey Pueblo.

In August, consum-ers went to Buckeye Reservoir for an an-nual picnic, where they enjoyed great food and company amid some of nature's wonders. After eating to their hearts content, it started to rain and hail. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because it also brought out the wild life! The group enjoyed

spotting 20-30 head of deer on the ride home. Before returning to the center, they stopped by the Museum of Rusty, where they enjoyed looking at antiques and reliving our history.

It was another great summer at Active Re-Entry’s Moab location!
