With a Thankful HeartWith a Thankful Heart

I want to thank the whole church family for all of your love and support over the last seven years. Betty and I have been so blessed and fortunate to be a part of Scott City First

United Methodist Church. I have a greater understanding of Paul’s words to the church in Philippi: “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart.” (Philippians 1:3-7b, ESV). We love you all and we are blessed to have you as friends.

In Jesus’ love and service,

~Pastor Dennis Carter

Staying Connected

Next Chapter (continued from pg. 14) Andover, and Pastor John Lewis has been called to our church. What is our role in this change? How are we to respond? How do we remember the last chapter fondly and still be ready for the next one to unfold? When I looked up the definition of pastor online, I found that Bible dictionaries define the word as “a helper or feeder of the sheep.” (source: BibleStudyTools.com). My vanity struggles with this image because that requires us—the church—to be the sheep. Being called a sheep isn’t flattering. Sheep aren’t known for their intelligence, good decision-making, nor self-defense skills. When Jesus saw crowds of people coming to be healed, the Bible tells us, “He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:36)—not the picture of strength and independence we desire to project. Why did Jesus refer to us as sheep several times? I’m afraid that too often we fit the negative characteristics of sheep. Instead of listening for God’s voice and going where He calls, we take off on our own paths, sometimes right into danger. However, I don’t believe God wants us to remain that kind of sheep. Referring to His followers in John 10:27, Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow Me.” Yes, He called us sheep, yet I hear love and affection in this statement. Also, I hear instruction. He calls us to be the kind of sheep who look to the Shepherd, instead of going our own way. Even listening to Jesus is no guarantee that the path will be without peril. As Jesus was sending out His disciples to preach and heal, He warned them, “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves” (Matthew 10:16). Thankfully, He doesn’t abandon us, or ask us to do His will without His help. A few verses later, Jesus tells the disciples not to worry about what to say when arrested because God would speak through them (v. 19-20). So, fellow sheep, are we willing to listen for God’s voice, and trust Him even in difficult circumstances? Are we ready to allow our new pastor, our new helper, to assist us in this endeavor? I know we can! Let’s move into our next chapter

with our eyes focused on our Shepherd. ~ In His love, Kari

Next Chapter “There’s a season for everything and a time for every matter under the heavens ”

Ecclesiastes 3:1 When I was a child, I didn’t understand why adults would say “time flies.” I always seemed to yearn for the next phase of my life, not content to enjoy the current one. Time felt like it crept along. Now that I have a child of my own, time appears to zip past me. I try to grab a hold of it but it’s like trying to carry water in my hands—it dribbles through before I get very far. Nearly 11 years ago, my daughter was an infant. Before I know it, she’ll be graduating from high school. However, if I’m honest, I don’t want her to be stuck in a child-like state. I want her to grow and mature through each new chapter of life. As a church, we are beginning a new chapter. Pastor Dennis Carter is moving to
