Pastor’s Article

Many of you know Rev. Dr. Herb Meza from our

congregation. As I’ve shared with you all in the past,

Herb was my pastor when I first felt called into the

ministry. I’ve not forgotten the first Easter I heard him

preach. It was at a time when I was struggling with

the idea of the resurrection. Just when I needed it

most, I heard him pose some simple questions in this

sermon. He asked, “How did we get from the upper

room, to Westminster Abbey? How did we get from

the disciples singing a simple fisherman’s lullaby, to

Handel’s Messiah? How did we get from this rag-tag

community of simple folks who lived on the margins

of the world, to the World Council of Churches?

He also brought up the point that many of our modern

schools and hospitals were born out of this movement

of people who would believe and follow after the

risen Christ. Today, hungry people are fed, sick peo-

ple are cared for, broken people are being made

whole. Something huge happened!

I have come to believe in the resurrection because I

see it all around me. I see it in people who are healed

of despair and bitterness and indifference. I see in

places like homeless shelters and soup kitchens, and

in people who care for the sick. And I hear it in the

voices of those who call us to live in harmony with

each other and with God.

Jesus has risen! May you come to see that God's love

is alive and at work in the world – even in you, even

in me.

Grace and Peace,

Joe

Summary of Stated Session Minutes from March 21, 2016 Rick Ulp, Clerk of Session

The Financial Report was submitted for the month of February 2016, with the financial status

remaining in a very solid position as we continue to operate in the Black. Elder Steve Foland reported

that the March financial picture may be less dramatic as there are a number of administrative expense

obligations due this month.

Elder Brian Loftus expressed his need to be removed as an Elder in Active Session responsible for the

Properties Ministry, citing his family and work obligations. Elder Rita Bryant remains as the Elder for

this Ministry. The Nominating committee will be asked to begin a search for another Elder.

Rev Charles Landreth has suffered a medical situation and will be returning from South Carolina to his

home at Westminster Woods where he will be recuperating. Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie.

Elder Rita Bryant indicated that the building repairs and renovations are moving along as expected and

should be mostly completed by Easter Sunday. A motion to a lot additional expenditure of $3,700.00

for repair and placement of our SR13 signage was approved.

The Mission Ministry has begun the 2nd Sunday, 2 cents a meal program which will continue through

the year in support of the Jamaica Mutual Mission Fund. Our first 2 cents a meal collection resulted in

over $140.00 being collected.

Elder Juliet Johnson is our Elder liaison for our sponsored scouting program. It was recently noted that

3 of the scouts have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. A well done will be sent to those individuals on

behalf of the Session and Geneva Congregation.

Elder John Booth presented the Adult Bible Study curriculum, “Krazy Kinfolks”, to Session for

approval.

Elder Kathie Ettinger presented the new Social Media Policy to Session in March for approval.

A number of books on various religious subjects will be made available if you are interested in ex-

panding your personal library.

Elder Adrianne Lord reported that the Geneva on-line calendar is being prepared and may be released

to the congregation very soon as a more permanent source of information. She also reported that a pro-

gram is being put in place to develop a Geneva photo directory. The dates of 12-14 May are tentatively

assigned for this event.

STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE

Scott Wild

Luke 6:38

Give and it will be given to you. They will pour

into your lap a good measure - pressed down,

shaken together, and running over. For by your

standard of measure it will be measured to you

in return.

With the Stewardship Committee in the early

stages of planning our campaign for this year,

we thought this would be a good time to prepare

you for the next presentation of Dave Ramsey's

Financial Peace. For those of you who have not

had the opportunity to participate in this

program, it is not only about saving money or

getting out of debt. Rather, it is about living and

giving the way God designed. Dave Ramsey

will teach how to implement these seven steps

in achieving financial peace:

1) Save $1,000 in a beginner emergency fund

2) Pay off all debt (except the house)

3) Put 3-6 months of expenses into savings

4) Invest 15% of your household income into

retirement plans

5) Save for your children's college education

6) Pay off the house early

7) Build wealth and give!

This program may be of benefit to you or maybe

someone you know (friend, neighbor, children,

etc.) Our 15 year old son participated in the last

presentation, and is working on the first step.

The program will also provide you with the

contact information for local professionals that

can help you accomplish these and other goals.

We prayerfully

hope that you will

consider joining

us for the next

presentation and

remember to invite

your neighbor or

friend to join us

for this enriching

program. We anticipate starting our next class in

late August or early September.
