Music: Count Us In is Australia’s biggest school initiative, with more than 500,000 participating students from over 2,100 schools nationwide. This event brings teachers, parents, students and the music industry together in celebration. More than half a million people united to sing the same song “Paint me a song” at the same time, 12 noon, right across the country. It was a very special occasion. My thanks go to Mark DeLaine on this initiative and also to our wonderful students who certainty got into the spirit of things and sang with gusto. This week began with the launch of our new Strategic Plan 2015-2019 and a Foundation thank you event. It is with excitement that we share our plans for the future with you. This plan provides the momentum to carry the school forward. It builds the bridge between our successes and our future, while honouring the philosophies and values on which SPW built. The strategic plan aims to position SPW as “A place that will nurture students to be happy, knowledgeable and creative young people who care for others and make a positive difference in the world”. Copies of the exciting new plan will be sent home to all families via the communication folders in the coming week. Monday evening was also an opportunity to thank those who contributed to the Foundation and the projects that this enabled. We really appreciate their generosity and it was wonderful to be able to acknowledge our supporters. Thursday I was also fortunate to share in the Year 2 led Chapel Service. Year 2s welcomed many special friends and parents and showcased their learning during their Unit of Inquiry “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. They highlighted that despite the fact that things change, and we grow, that there are many things in life that remain constant; the love of our families and the advantages that come with being part of and contributing to our community. Our Year 2s confidently spoke of a bright future and are well prepared to approach this. The world’s future is in safe hands with our Year 2s! Another wonderful example of students learning was the Year 7 Exhibition, held last evening. In their final year of the PYP, students carry out an extended, collaborative inquiry project, known as the exhibition, under the guidance of their teachers. From the Deputy Principal It is hard to believe that it is November and that we are already in week 4. Amongst many highlights this week I want to single out just a few, dangerous to do so but…. Firstly, last week the School came together to celebrate Music. My thanks go to Mark DeLaine on this initiative and

also to our wonderful students who certainty got into the spirit of things and sang with gusto. The strategic plan aims to position SPW as “A place that will nurture students to be happy, knowledgeable and creative young people who care for others and make a

positive difference in the world”.

Another wonderful example of students learning was the Year 7 Exhibition, held last

evening. In their final year of the PYP, students carry out an extended, collaborative inquiry project, known as the exhibition, under the guidance of their teachers. The exhibition represents a significant event in the life of both the school and student, synthesizing the essential elements of the program and sharing them with the whole school

community. Our Year 7s currently participate in the exhibition, where one of the six transdisciplinary themes is undertaken. This is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of the PYP through the five essential elements – knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action – while working with others who have a similar interest. I was lucky to mentor two groups. It was a privilege to work alongside these students and gently guide them and hone their interests, passions and work. I can tell you I

was very proud last night as I saw their work come to fruition. Of course events like this do not happen without the time and efforts of the backstage crew. To the teachers, mentors and parents who supported our students on this journey, thank you. Next week sees our Year 4s and their teachers head off on their rescheduled camp. We wish them well at Port Hughes and hope the sun shines. It is here at last! Enjoy the weekend and some precious family time. CO-CURRICULAR NOMINATIONS FOR 2015

As part of our ongoing communication processes, all parents will receive a letter outlining the improvements to our co-curricular offerings, including the engagement of Kelly Sports and other private providers that have been generated as a result of feedback received following the trial of Kelly Sports this year. At the same time, the

rationale for inclusion of Junior Primary in the core school day, and with Upper Primary moving to after the core day, will be explained. Overwhelming interest in the nomination process unfortunately saw servers crash in Melbourne which made it difficult for parents to log on to PTO and nominate their child’s co-curricular options for 2015. Hopefully the issues have now been addressed. We have started discussions on how this may be improved so that this does not happen again. Our apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.

Junior Primary Sports Day—Friday 14 November Next Friday families are welcome to attend—the coffee van is booked. 14 November presents Junior Primary students with the opportunity to engage in their much anticipated Sports Day. Children have been practising for a range of exciting activities aimed at developing teamwork and cooperation. The focus is on enjoyment and skill development while supporting each other. Our Year 7 students work closely with Junior Primary students, demonstrating leadership and compassion as they work alongside both students and teachers. Students are timetabled through activities, including a break. We ask that adults remain outside the roped off areas to ensure children can concentrate on their activities. The Whole School Relay will take place at 9.00am on Mackenzie Oval with the JP

Sports Day from 9.15am and running through to approximately 11.00am. Students will return to classes for the remainder of the day for normal lessons.

ICT News Last night was a great opportunity to see technology in action to complement the work of the students in the Year 7 PYP Exhibition. From simple word processing and graphic manipulation through to complex movie productions of amazing quality, it was terrific to see the students making calculated decisions about ICTs to suit a purpose and then put this into action. From my perspective it was also much easier this year with the availability of iPads, in both the lead up to the Exhibition and device management on the night.

Leading on from this, for those families involved in the iPad program at Year 6-7, please feel free to send in any constructive feedback that may help us as we prepare for 2015. Either an email or the traditional pen and paper approach will be fine. Finally, a gentle reminder that all iPad forms for Year 5 to 7 students need to be returned as soon as possible, particularly the form stating intentions to lease or BYOD for next year.

PFA WALKATHON

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, special friends, neighbours, fellow workers and staff who sponsored the children last Friday for their Walkathon. Just a quick reminder though, the sponsorship money needs to be returned to SPW before Friday 14 November. We are so thrilled with the success of the Walkathon and the estimated $13,950 we have raised. PFA NEXT MEETING

Week 7’s PFA meeting (Wednesday 26 November) will see us planning events for 2015. Please come along and share your ideas and be part of the decision making process for next year. FRIENDRAISING AND END OF YEAR EVENTS

The end of term is fast approaching. The PFA donate $300 to each year level to coordinate a ‘friendraising’ event which must be available to all parents and families in the year level. Chaplain’s Chat Which things in life are always the same and which things are subject to change? 2MR and 2AA explored this theme in their Chapel Service “God’s Story, Our Story – Past, Present and Future.” Our Bible reading from Hebrews 6:6-8 reminded us “Remember,

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” The Year 2s reinforced this with a wonderful Song by Vicky Beeching which went like this “Yesterday, today and forever; you are the same, you never change. Yesterday, today and forever; you are

faithful and we will trust in you.” This message underpinned the story of two families, one living today and one living two thousand years ago. We saw how many things have changed with food, school, electricity, furniture, technology and yet many things are the same as well – families caring for each other, children’s love of stories and God’s ever-present love for us. Well done Year 2AA and 2MR. Next Thursday’s Chapel, just our Year 3 to 7 classes will attend to hear our Guest

speaker, successful Norwood Premiership player and coach, Ben Warren, speak to us about challenges and transitions in life. The Year 7s will then spend the morning in Chapel discussing with recent Old Scholars some of the details of what to expect when moving to Secondary School. It is always a very fruitful morning addressing this big change in life for our Graduating students.

Fr Andrew Mintern

School Chaplain

Prayer for the Week Dear God We pray for our new Receptions starting school next year and for the Year 7s transitioning into Secondary School. We pray that they will enjoy a great new part of their life and always remember that they are part of our beautiful community. We pray that their future journey is a happy

and fulfilling one.

The Ode of Remembrance The Ode for commemoration services is the famous fourth stanza from For the Fallen, a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon, which was first published in London’s The Times newspaper

on 21 September 1914. This compelling verse, which became the Ode of Remembrance in common usage across the Commonwealth, has been used in association with commemoration services since 1921:

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

Canteen CANTEEN MENU THE PINES

CANTEEN MENU R-7 We would like to thank Camille Rasiah for her assistance in the Canteen during the past week. It has been very much appreciated. Please phone me on 7221 6216, or email me [email protected] if you are able to assist in the Canteen in Term 4. Thank you.

CANTEEN GOES ONLINE

Its finally here…online canteen ordering. No need to look for lunch bags and

especially any loose change. Easy and free to download, the app is called ‘Qkr!’. We have trialed it this week with several parents, and it is working fantastically with not one hiccup.

Please refer to the guide below and follow the instructions. The app is available for both Apple iOS and Android phones & tablets.

All orders need to be in by 8.30am that morning, but can be up to 2 weeks in advance. Orders via the ‘Qkr!’ app will be our preferred method for all lunch orders in 2015.

Try it and lets us know how you go. David Brock
