PRESIDENT’S COLUMN November 2011

I belong to several clubs and get a number of newsletters and maga-zines from them each month. I am always dismayed that the President’s seem to feel obligated to review the contents of that month’s edition…after all, I am going to read the thing anyway in a few minutes, so why does someone have to waste space telling me what I am about to read?

In retrospect, however, there may be a method to the madness. Perhaps some people ONLY read the Presi-dent’s column and only skim the contents, so maybe giving them a preview will pique their interest and motivate them to read an article in depth. Or, more likely, most people NEVER read the President’s column and so it ’s not redundant after all!

In any case, I urge you to check out the articles on upcoming events in this edition and decide NOW to

participate. Our November tour is going to be great fun and our Christ-mas Party is always very enjoyable and classy. Don’t be like so many members I talk to after an event who say, “golly that sounds like it was fun, I wish I had come”. All these events take a great deal of time and effort to construct and we really do try hard to include something for everyone. Get Involved! And please, sign up EARLY. That makes things so much easier on the orga-nizers. Like my Dad used to say, “it ’s the same amount of work, no mat-ter when you do it”. So do it now.

Your tireless Board of Directors is working hard behind the scenes to keep the Club active and of value

to our Members. We’ve already sketched out plans for many of the 2012 events (see the calendar in-side). We’re going to be introduc-ing a new online Regalia store with a much broader selection of JOC logo goods which are click to buy….yes we really are getting into the 21st centu-ry! And we are considering a major overhaul to the website to make it more interactive and user friendly…even including a way for Members to casually “Meet Up” with others for impromptu events. Watch for these developments in the months ahead.

Finally take note that the biennial Western States Meet (with the 13 other western Jag Clubs) will be held in March in Phoenix. Make you plans now to attend what is always the largest and best meet-ing of the Jaguars anywhere.

Happy Holidays!

Hard to believe that it’s already Novem-ber and by the time you read this, there won’t be another Concourse until the end of “Winter.” However, Steve and the Board have done a good job putting events on Calendar so that we don’t have a good reason to stay home. If you’ve seen the Tech Tales article by Ed Sowell (Member Spotlight this month) in this month’s Tales or visited your website, I think he would tell you that it’s a good opportunity to tackle that short list of re-pairs ahead of show season next year. We’re constantly looking for solid content and Steve Kirby’s “Concourse Ready” se-ries is almost coming to a close. So, if

you have something that you are work-ing on and wouldn’t mind a set of pry-ing eyes or having the story told on the pages of the Tales, then let us know. As the Tales continues to evolve, our message and content is changing. We’ve had some feedback that suggests that we shouldn’t focus as much on the E-types and XK’s when most of the cars on the road today are XJ6’s, XJS’s and XJ8’s. Hard not to write about the Classics es-pecially with XKE 50th Celebrations go-ing on, but if you’ve ever had the oppor-tunity to drive a V8 XJR, you’ll know that they are pretty fun to drive and they de-

serve more press. Maybe Jaguar could be convinced to loan me a press car….but until then, I have to rely upon the membership. So, I invite you to step forward and drop me a line about your car. I would love to hear about it, perhaps see it photographed by Auto Effigies and maybe appear on our cover. That said, our last tribute to XKE 50th (Collector’s Edition?) is scheduled for December. If you haven’t already, please do send in photos of your E-type so that we can include your car in the collage and online editions. We’d love to hear your story. Don’t be left out.

According to Lucille 4Pebble Beach 2011

by Paul McNabb

Pebble Beach 2011 was a Jaguar lover’s paradise. I wrangled an invite to the swank corporate party at the Beach Club Thursday evening. Jaguar North Amer-ica had E2A, the Geneva display E-type and one of the four New York show cars at the entrance; pretty dang impressive. A couple of racing E-types were avail-able for inspection as well. After loading a plate sky high from an excellent food spread, I waddled over to the C-X75 pro-totype. It looked better than anything on the road today. Ian Callum, chief de-signer, proclaimed in a short speech that the car was moving forward to produc-tion! Get your checkbooks ready. It is a thoroughly modern highbred with in-dustry topping performance. The design was sleek and pure Jaguar.

Jaguars were in high demand at the auc-tion houses. An XK150 DHC, very similar to Lucille but in absolutely mint condi-tion after a complete restoration, sold for $225,000 at the RM! This was not an “S” car, just a perfect example. An un-restored 1961 E-type OTS with less than 3,800 original miles but looking rough sold for $118,250 at Gooding & Com-pany. An XK120 alloy roadster sold for

$319,000 at Gooding as well.

Laguna Seca was a masterpiece. Jaguar fielded a huge display spinning its his-tory in sympathetic story boards with real life examples nearby. There were close to twenty C-types, D-types and XKSSs parked outside. I’d never seen so many in one place before. I think twenty E-types raced in the main event, an all-time high for that model. It was thrill-ing to see and hear them going all out around the marvelously designed track. The Quail-A Motorsports Gathering fea-tured E-types as well. Seventeen of the iconic sports cars were circled in a grand display with the owners available to an-swer questions or just gloat. Many of the cars were early or one owner examples. The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was super crowded as usual with a heart-stopping $200 ticket price plus $35 for the poster and $20 for the pro-gram. It seems the higher price charged, the more people want to attend! Jag-uar had several significant cars on the fairway of the 18th hole with Stillwater Cove as a backdrop. Peter & Merle Mul-lin won Best in Show with a 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne. I hope we’ll see it soon at the museum with its cousin, the C-27 Aerosport. It was like a win for the home team. Twenty-two Ferrari GTOs lined the

giant sand trap along the ocean, a world record gathering I think.

* * *Don Greene drove his 1958 XK150 FHC named Bubba with my wife, Cathy, and I following in Lucille this year. We took the 101 on the way north because the fog was really dense in the early morn-ing. Bubba also needed a part we re-trieved with a pit stop at XKs Unlimited. We came back on the Pacific Coast High-way with a stop for hot chocolate and snacks at Napenthe and a picnic at San Simeon. Round trip was 671 miles. Both cars performed flawlessly. Great sports touring cars with vintage looks. It was as good as it gets, at least according to Lucille.

Inland Empire Concours a Big Success

By Charlie Hallums

During the past weekend of October 1st. the Inland Empire Jaguar Club held their annual Concours in the mile high en-clave of Idyllwild, California, located in the San Jacinto Mountains on route 243 above and to the south of Palm Springs. Set among tall pines, sweet smelling ce-dars and legendary rocks……….. There were over twenty seven Jaguars in attendance with members from the Inland Empire, San Diego, Los Angeles and Phoenix Jaguar clubs. As in the past the event was held at the rustic Idyllwild Inn located in the heart of the Idyllwild community. This is a great location as once you arrive you can park your Jaguar for the weekend. Restaurants and anything else that is needed can be found within walking distance of the Inn. Quite a few of the participants arrived Friday afternoon just in time for Mother Nature to welcome all with a rain storm to help wash off the road grime. This “hospitality” car wash continued into the early hours of Saturday morning. Much of the rain aggravation was re-

leased with the wine and cheese wel-come event Friday evening at the Inland Empire Jaguar Club cabin. Hats off to Rusty and Jolene Beard for the libations and hors d’oeuvres. Afterwards many went together in a large group to savor the local restaurants. Saturday morning broke with fresh air and sunshine which continued for the rest of the weekend. Unfortunately we were also visited by Vandals and Visigoths in the wee hours that made off with three “leapers” and personal effects out of one Jaguar. With no paint or panel damage to any of the “cats” we all took it in stride…. Yea..a new “leaper” is $250.00! In attending over twenty years of Jaguar Concours this is the first time that I have experienced any vandalism of this sort. Dastardly wank-ers! One Jaguar owner was not even a Club member. He just happened to be spending the weekend at the Idyllwild Inn………

The “rags down” call went out at 10AM and the judging began at a leisurely pace. We were able to complete the review of all the Jaguars by lunchtime. At 1:30PM the scores were announced and awards passed out. Those who judged were also awarded a bottle of wine. Outstanding! Many of us spent the rest of the day and

evening catching up with friends and spending the night. Some of us volun-teered to do two hour shifts from mid-night to 6:00AM to watch over the “cats” in case of a return attack by the van-dals. The only creatures that wandered through the area under the canopy of stars during our watch period were a couple of bob cats and opossums. Those of us who remained over to Sunday were packed up and gone by 11:00AM. Harriet and I took the “palms to the pines” route 74 back home and made it over the Ortega Highway into Orange County by 1:30 pm. Less than an hour later the road was closed for over two hours due to a motorcycle crash. The Ortega Highway continues to require driving vigilance at all times. Please plan to support and attend the In-land Empire Jaguar Club Concours next year. Once again it will be held the first Saturday of October 2012 at the Idyll-wild Inn. We will work closely with the Idyllwild Inn staff and club volunteers to watch over our “cats” just in case the local hoodlums haven’t outgrown their “sticky finger” habits.

Two Fabulous Car Museums And a Brunch at the Mission Inn!

By Creighton TurnerNovember 13, 2011

That’s right, all you Jaguar thrill seek-ers, Dr. Don Rankin has arranged for us to visit two of the fastest and finest auto museums in the west, the Tom Malloy Car Museum in Corona, and the River-side International Automotive Museum in Riverside, both on Sunday, November 13th, 2011. Then, after stirring up our fantasy hungers at the two museums, we will thunder over to the nearby his-torical Riverside Mission Inn for one of their legendary brunchie poos. Egads, tis more than the mind can grasp!

Tom Malloy has been a successful busi-ness entrepreneur, car racer and collec-tor for many years and has assembled all his fabulous car collection into one in-credible museum. The museum is beau-tiful and the cars are either meticulously restored or exquisitely presented in their original glory. These are all racecars, re-ally fast cars, from every racing milieu and background, each with a history which Tom Malloy will bring vividly alive for us in his narratives.

The Riverside International Museum is only 15 minutes from there in driv-ing time, but will take many of us back nearly half a century, to the golden years of the late 1950’s and 60’s, when tiny,

small engined Lotus and Porsches and MG Specials battled thundering Chevy Corvettes, AC Bristols that some crazy Texan had stuffed a 260 Ford V8 into, and cars called birdcage Maseratis and Ferrari Testarossas. The cars and pic-tures of Riverside Raceway, now long gone, are enough to make us old coots weep with recollection, for this museum relives those great and glorious years and their cars and drivers. We will be hosted by curator and director, Bruce Ward, whose father (not Roger Ward), set many of those racing records with one of the cars there. You will see a stun-ning new Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, a Jaguar XJ220, and even the prettiest Jaguar SIII roadster I think I’ve ever seen. There are two buildings with incredible cars, including at least one of every type of Maserati sold in this country.

After leaving this feast for the eyes (at about 1PM), we will snarl away to the legendary old Riverside Mission Inn, a huge, gorgeous old hotel dating back nearly 100 years, where we will deal with the pangs and pains of unsated hunger. I know that many of you will want to walk around gazing in awe at this handsome old castle. But the rest of us must eat. The day is Sunday and they are only able to serve their magnificent big Brunch, a cornucopia of all the worlds known evil foodstuffs and liquids. We have re-served a gathering of table places out in the most lovely of courtyards, weather permitting. The cost is not bad, all things considered, $39 per person, which with tax and service totals to $42.28 each. I’m sure we’ll all love it.

The brunch is optional, so those who wish may choose to end the day at the museum, or after wandering around the Mission Inn depart for the home corral.

Those who choose to dine with us should

rsvp and send a check to: Shirley Nyquist 5120 E. El Roble, Long Beach 90815 (652-597-1263), so that the club can reserve and pay for the brunches without confusion. Also, each of the museums charges a “donation” of $5 per person, which we will each pay at the museum’s door.

Volume 56 No.11 www. lajagclub.com November 2011 7

Ed was one of the first people that I met in my second stint with the Club. His XJ-S was parked across from my Series III at a Concourse in SLO and he came over and introduced himself. I didn’t know that he was an expert on the inner workings of the XJ-S. I suggest you check out his website which details a number of XJS repairs and upgrades.-ED

You can’t miss Ed & Judy Sowell’s XJ-S at a JOC event and as our Webmaster; you can’t visit our website without seeing his other passion. Ed and Judy are an inte-gral part of the Club and it all stems from a certain 1976 XJ-S. Their car is cosmeti-cally spectacular (and original) and me-chanically perfect. It is easily one of the nicest early XJ-S I’ve seen in a long, long time. And, they drive the car regularly.Having had two love affairs with XJS’s, I can tell you that they are very seductive car. By the end of the production run,

the later cars were pretty well sorted and a joy to own but the pre-HE models of-fered a greater seat of the pants driving experience than the later cars, perhaps with the exception of the limited edition 1994 XJR-S. Ed and Judy’s car is indeed an early one with a build date of Decem-ber 1975. She was number is 51180 or the 1180th XJ-S to roll off the assembly line. Also, note that the XJ-S name was properly hyphenated until the introduc-tion of the HE model. This car was originally owned by Henry Segerstrom (think South Coast Plaza, Segerstrom Hall, etc.), from whom Ed bought it in December, 1980 with 45,000 miles on the clock. It was Ed’s daily driver until he retired and he continues to drive it several times a week. It’s been reliable enough to drive on Club tours to the Central Coast and other out of town des-tinations every year. The current mileage is about 140,000.

While never fully restored, the car is very well maintained and cher-ished by the family. Ed has done a lot of the maintenance himself and document-ed it on his website www.efsowell.us/ed/myJag.html with Britalia in Fullerton handling the bigger jobs. The body was sanded to bare metal and completely repainted in 1988, and the interior com-pletely redone in 2003. It looks pretty good for its age and regularly takes home a trophy in JCNA D8A class; a first is not uncommon but he’s also compet-ing against XJS’s up to 1996.Watch for some of Ed’s articles to appear in the Tech Tips section of the newslet-ter. He’s graciously allowed us to reprint his articles and photos for the member-ship. The next time you see a certain XJ-S, please do take a moment to introduce yourself!

Ed and Judy Sowell’s Jaguar XJ-S

”Ed’s XJ-S regularly places 2nd in the JCNA D8A and an occasional first...if there aren’t too many 15 years younger XJSes in the show!”

”Ed & Judy Sowell’s XJ-S carries a 1976 US model year but shows a 12/75 build date on the door post. The vehicle number is 51180, meaning it is the 1180th XJ-S off the assembly line.”

As many of you know, my XK150 has won numer-

ous awards and continues to be ranked in the JCNA top five annually, despite being driven about 3000 miles a year. Many people ask me, “how do you keep a driven car so nice?” In this series of articles I will share with you a few tips and tricks that have been useful for me……I hope you find them useful too.

NOVEMBER 2011EXTERIOR WASH

We’re on the home stretch in prepar-ing our Jaguar for show, or just getting it in top shape, having completed all the heavy work on the interior, engine bay and boot; and now it’s time to start on the final exterior jobs.

Most people are inclined to wash first, but as I explained in the first chapter of this story, we want to work top to bot-tom, inside to outside and dirtiest to cleanest. The reason is simple; we don’t want to spoil any work done previously (like ruining our exterior cleaning by do-ing the engine bay after the car is washed). Most of us have been washing cars since

before we can remember. I have some fond memories of helping by Dad wash all the “low places” on his ’59 Pontiac Bonneville. Believe me, there were a LOT of low places on that behemoth! Unfortunately most of what we learned as youngsters was wrong. Starting with the selection of a detergent.

Dishwashing solution seemed fine in ’59, but today there are much better prod-ucts. All the major car care companies offer a car wash solution and most are just fine. They are PH neutral (not too acid or alkaline) and contain additives that help the car shed water. I like the product made by Griot’s Garage, but any good quality car wash soap is OK….just don’t use anything found in the kitchen or laundry room.

Half the battle is removing as much dirt, dust and grime as possible BEFORE soap-ing. Spreading the suds on a dirty sur-face only creates a fine abrasive mixture which will result in swirls and scratches to the finish. Choose a shady location or work on a cloudy day….you want to take your time and avoid water spots. Never wash in the sun.

I use a garden hose without a spray noz-zle for better control of the water. Set the flow low and let the water “wash” over the surface. This really helps the water sheet off and cuts way down on drying. I also prefer a lamb’s wool wash mitt over a towel as the wool is softer and gets into the small areas better.

Drying is done with a “two stage” mi-crofiber towel method (I’m not a big chamois fan). Use one clean towel to wipe off most of the water and follow with another, drier towel to finish, one in each hand. You will probably have to change out the dry towel two or three times. I do the glass first, then the body, then the chrome as I find that any water spots that do form are easier to get off the chrome.

The bottom line to my method is realiz-ing that the act of washing a car can in fact be the source of deterioration of the finish. Less rubbing is better. Less dirt being pushed around is better. Less wa-ter is better. Oh, and nine year old knees are better for the low places!

Cleaning AC Condensate DrainsEdward F. Sowell

If you sometimes experience water splashing on your feet while making right turns in your XJ6 or XJS, it is probably because the tubes that are supposed to drain the condensate from the evapora-tor are clogged. They tend to clog due to disintegration of the thin foam used as flap seals in the AC unit behind the dash, or simply dirt from years of dust washing off the evaporator. When I cleaned mine for the first time recently it seemed to be the latter, as there was lots of fine mate-rial rather than chunks. Regardless of the source, the problem is easily solved.

There is a drain tube on each side of the transmission tunnel, dropping down from of the AC unit and emerging under the car. The red arrow in Figure 1 points

to the emerging tube on the left side of the car, approximately at the front of the transmission pan. There is another one on the right side. All you have to do is run something up the tube to break loose whatever is clogging it.

Figure 1 Condensate Drain

I had my 1976 XJ-S on the rack at Brita-lia Import Service in Fullerton and they were kind enough to let me clean the tubes while it was in the air. Although most people on the XJ-S Lovers mail list use a coat hanger, they let me use their

“special equipment” for the job (Figure 2). In the chuck of the hand drill is a length of spiral-wound cable. It seemed to be a little more substantial, but I imagine an old speedometer cable would do the job. Or, just straighten a coat hanger like most of the folks. Either way, a gentle touch is called for because the tubes are rubber and you want to avoid sharp edges on whatever you use.

Cleaning aC Condensate drains(Continued from page 10)If you don’t like getting under the car the tubes can also be cleaned from the pas-senger compartment. You have to take off the inboard footwell trim pieces to get at the top ends of the drain tubes.

The drains may quickly clog again if the problem is due to disintegrating foam or other collected debris in the unit. It’s a huge job to replace the foam as it would require removal of the dash and the evaporator housing itself. Some people have reported removing the side plate and cleaning the drip tray of debris as best they could but I have not tried that.

tools explained

drill press:A tall upright machine useful for sudden-ly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

Wire WHeel:Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removesfingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, ‘Oh Sh--!’ It also throws finewire like pieces of metal all over the freshly painted, previously dented ob-ject, safely stored in the corner.

pliers:Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

Belt sander:An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HaCKsaW:One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle... It transforms

human energy into a crooked, unpredict-able motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

Vise-grips:Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is avail-able, they can also be used to transferintense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

oxYaCetYlene torCH:Used almost entirely for light-ing various flammable ob-jects in your shop on fire Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race.

taBle saW:A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.

HYdraUliC Floor JaCK:Used for lowering an automo-bile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack han-dle firmly under the bumper.

MEMBER CAR A STAR! Club member Bob Scibelli recently volunteered his immaculate XK120 for a wedding in Palm Springs.

He knew it was a high end affair, as the wedding planner offered him a nice fee just to drive the bride to the wedding. Little did he know that his car would be the star of the show! Seems this was an Indian wedding and there is a tradition of pushing the bride and groom around in a car….who knew! As can be seen in the accompanying photo the 120 got quite a ride! Bob reports that the lead designer of Facebook was the groom and Mark Zuckerberg (founder of Facebook) was the Best Man. The “ride” and attendant singing and dancing last half an hour!
