5 Theo's Note We are now engaged in the Church’s version of the membership
pledge drive so common on public radio and television. (Aren’t you
glad we only do it annually?!) Between now and November 22 you will
receive various pieces of information designed to encourage your spir-
itual discernment about ways that you might step up and assist in meet-
ing the the goals of the parish. (Please also check our website under
ʺSupportʺ for further information on giving.)
Some of you may be looking for the usual ʺhard factsʺ rather than spir-
itual meditations, but research tells us that most people really donʹt re-
spond to ʺfacts.ʺ Experts say that congregational members tend to tune
out requests to ante up in order to meet the budget. Generally, they
don’t respond to emphasizing scarcity or maintenance or need, either.
These things, even when they are realities, just make people feel
stressed and even resentful.
Besides, it’s thinking small and it really doesn’t display an attitude of
trust in God at all.
So let me lay out a few alternatives:
Give out of gratitude and a sense of thanksgiving. Let your giving
reflect and celebrate the lavishness of God’s bounty. God has blessed
each one of us with so much. Calculate what percentage of your house-
hold income (including, for you retired folks, your savings and pen-
sions) you currently return to God. Can you increase your proportional
giving?
Give of your first fruits—the first, the very best, of what you have
been given—not the left-overs. This means: give to God first, then figure
out your household budget. Isn’t God worth it?
Give with a glad heart. If you can’t, stop giving. Because the truth is
that unless you are moved by the Spirit—unless you see the potential
and are convicted of the worth of this community as a vehicle of God’s
grace in the world—nothing I or anyone else can say is going to make

any difference. Will you invest yourself fully in the work God is
doing in this place? It will take approximately $3,000 per house-
hold to do this in 2016.
Make no mistake: whatever you do with your money is a spiritu-
al issue. Pray about it; search your hearts; strive for that child-like
spirit of trust in God; and then act. May the decision you reach
reflect the joy and abundance of God’s presence in your life and in
this place.
Theo+
P.S. Don’t think I don’t wrestle with this too. While I am among
you I am returning 10% of my salary or $280 per month to Christ
Church. This level of giving does not make me better than anyone
else, but it does raise a question: If I, who am only a sojourner
here, believe in the mission and ministry of this place enough to
support it sacrificially, can you who are residents here do less?
Yes, sometimes I am tempted to think that all this puts a real
crimp in my life-style, but the reality is that I lack for nothing I tru-
ly need. And so with gladness, I present the offering of my life
and labor to the Lord, and take my place as a co-creator with God,
an agent of life and love in a Church whose purpose is to trans-
form the world. Aren’t you called to do the same?

Walking the Way Annual Giving Campaign
Our annual campaign kicked off on the
Feast of All Saints, November 1 and will
conclude with a gala celebration on our par-
ish feast day of Christ the King, November
22. Everyone should have received an initial
mailing and will continue to receive email or
flat mail announcements through the month.
Please prayerfully consider your giving and
see what you can do to support the contin-
ued mission and ministry of the household
of God that is Christ Episcopal Church.
Questions? Contact Sean Dowse, campaign manager.

A letter to the church from the 26th Presiding Bishop
October 23, 2015 A letter to the Episcopal Church from The Most Rev.
Katharine Jefferts Schori, Primate and Presiding
Bishop of the Episcopal Church as she prepares to
hand over the reins to her successor, The Rt. Rev.
Michael Curry, on November 1.
The Episcopal Church has come a long way in the
last 10 years. We are no longer consumed by internal
conflict over various social issues. We are clearer
about who we are – a multinational church, with
congregations in 17 nations, worshiping in countless
different languages, thriving in international,
immigrant, and multicultural contexts everywhere,
and discovering the abundant life that comes in
turning outward to love the neighbors nearby and far
away. We are far more conscious about our vocation
as partners in the mission of God to reconcile and heal
the world, particularly shaped by the Five Anglican
Marks of Mission. We are holding our identity as
Episcopal Christians a bit more confidently, even in
the midst of our diversity. We are also more willing to
hold that identity lightly and gracefully in engaging
other Christians and people of other religious
traditions, searching for what we dream of in common
– shalom, the Reign of God, a more just and peaceful
world, with abundant life for all creation.
I am deeply grateful for what God has been up to in
the midst of our journey together, and I look forward
to seeing how this church of the middle way will
continue to lead and partner as we travel the road
home, into God’s fullest dream of abundant life for
all. I thank the people of this Church and beyond for
your prayers over the last nine years – especially in
recognition that we do this work together, never
alone. May God bless the next chapter of The
Episcopal Church’s engagement in God’s mission, as
we go together into Galilee!

FAITH IN ACTION FAITH IN ACTION
A Success Story . . . .
On Wednesdays Sandy does respite care for a retired
couple where the wife has dementia and Parkinsonʹs
disease. The husband is the kind of man every person
would want to know - kind, generous, and involved
for years in activities that bring joy to families with
children.
Because of Sandyʹs natural inclination to be caring
and outgoing, the couple and their grown children,
also, have bonded with this great lady who is my wife.
They know their wife and mother is in good hands
when they are tending to matters outside their homes.
Faith in Action has another successful case of a vol-
unteer bringing peace of mind and some free time to a
deserving Red Wing family.

I’m a Christ Church Booster Because…
Christ Church members provide a loving, caring, and
fun community. Pat, 66
Christ Church is a happy place where one can feel
safe and loved. I love the church services where ser-
mons are meaningful, where prayers pive me peace
and comfort, and where the hymns are familiar. We
have great special music from our gifted parishioners
or persons in the community. God has blessed us with
wonderful staff. Marm, 79
It’s a wonderful, supportive community to be part
of!! Mike, 67
I have been a member since 1957 and have always
felt very much “at home” here. To me it has always
been a wonderful place to attend but I have noticed
over the years it has beome even more a place of wel-
come and comfort. Perhaps, too, I have become more
outgoing and involved which has made a difference!!
I especially enjoy the various activities in which I am
involved- Altar Guild being my first love. It is my
privilege to intermingle with so many members of
Christ Church. I am so thankful for the super
leadership we as a congregation are afforded. It is a
true blessing to be a member and a Booster of Christ
Church. Mary, 87
I had a rough childhood and I have not always wor-
shipped God but he came to me and I am eternally
grateful.
I like Sunday School. Jenna, 11
I like acolyting. Ryslan, 11
I like sitting next to Mrs. Dressen. Ella, 9
I love my church family. June, 89
The most beautiful stained glass windows in town
are an inspiration. The liturgy and music are majestic.
They’re a bunch of good people who care for each
other. Anon.

Love the church and close knit family! Beautiful
building. Anon., 63
Christ Episcopal Church has been my “home away
from home” since 1949. Friends made at that time are
still my best friends, although some have passed
away. Memories of those experiences are some of my
fondest. At Christ Church one can worship in a beauti-
ful historical church and be involved in maintaining it.
There are many opportunities to learn by joining [the
various committees and educational offerings]. Joan,
91
Family Tradition. It isn’t the best reason church/
religion-wise, but it is one of the main things that
keeps me involved. I am fifth generation at Christ
Church and that is a source of pride. My family grew
up in this Church and I have very fond memories in
our “family pew.” We’ve had family baptisms, confir-
mations, weddings and funerals in this Church. My
great grandfather was Senior Warden, my father was
Senior Warden, and I assume I’ll pick up the torch this
next time around. I can’t imagine this place not being
Christ Episcopal Church. Jon
This place welcomes me and gives me peace. I am
challenged, loved, and appreciated. I am able to help
others and share my faith. Catherine J., 60
The Church is an important central fixture in Red
Wing and the people involved are caring. Randy J., 60
It gives me a chance to fulfill my Christian mission
and is a place that reminds me of morals and ethics.
Bill H., 69
Church is a weekly vacation, a refresher from the
busy week. It is a time to sit, to sing, to meditate on the
lessons. It is therapy to be thankful, to think of others
and how we should be. Anon., 62
Lots of family history; diversity of parishioners; fa-
miliar liturgy; peaceful place. Anon.
Decades of family history – 5 generations! We care
about the church and our church family. We believe in
the ministry of Christ Church. Anon.
When our son Steve took off and was gone for over
ten years, we received so much support through many
prayers and concerns. After all those years we re-
ceived a call from Steve asking us to come out to Se-
attle. We drove out to meet him and he had booked us
at a Bed & Breakfast. The days were spent visiting,
going to the Rain Forest and the Peninsula. One after-
noon we sat at the Park and looked at pictures of
events that had transpired while he was gone. It was a
bit painful, but he was happy that he got caught up.
Since that time, we have kept in touch with Steve. Our
community was also very supportive with their pray-
ers. We felt blessed when we were asked about Steve:
it was almost like another prayer was said. We are so
grateful and thankful for all the concern and support.
Yea, Christ Church!! Chuck and Dawna
To walk in Christ Church is very comforting. When
I’m “settled” in the pew I feel at ease. I never get tired
of looking at the stained glass windows. The music is
wonderful: it adds so much to the service. I am very
lucky to be part of a great community! Sharon Bryan
Why Christ Episcopal Church? Our family moved to
Red Wing in June from out of state. While my hus-
band used to live in the area and has friends and fami-
ly near, this was all new to me. New state, new home,
new adventure. I was searching for something famil-
iar and comforting and church had always been this
place for me. On my very first visit to Christ Episcopal
Church, I was greeted with a warm smile and a paper
to help follow the service. It didnʹt take long for me to
feel like I had found what I was looking for, familiar
and comfortable. As a family, we are excited to begin
this next ʺadventureʺ in our lives and look forward to
lending our time and talent to this wonderful faith
community. Matt and Angela Shefveland, Zach and
Maddie

Sunday School Change This Fall we have been running Sunday School from
9:00 am until the exchange of the Peace, roughly an
hour and a half. Except for our youngest who are en-
gaged in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, this is turn-
ing out to be a loooong time to keep attention spans
occupied. So this is a community headʹs up that chil-
dren over age 6 will be in church with their families
starting Advent 1, November 29. To help them feel
more part of that gathered community, Fr. Theo will
offer a weekly ʺChildrenʹs Wordʺ in addition to the
adult sermon.

Econo Food Receipts Update Christ Church has taken on a money project to bene-
fit our Sunday School and Youth program. You can
help by saving your Econo Food grocery receipts.
We need to collect $150,000 in receipts, and when
we reach that amount, $1,000 will be given to the
program.
So far, we have collected $94,363.17, so you can see
we have a way to go to reach our goal of $150,000?
Keep those receipts coming by dropping them in the
box on the buffet in the Parish Hall.
