In collaboration with the AEI Committee for Dissemination of Educational Resources, the Administration and Management Committee presented the ACS AEI Virtual Grand Rounds titled “Virtual Approaches to Virtual Simulation” on December 3, 2020. The presentation featured resourceful approaches taken by two AEIs:

Surgery and Emergency Medicine Intern Virtual Trauma OrientationSpeakers: Jennifer Noble, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BC, CEN, CSHE; Crystal Bencken, MSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, CHSE; Kyle Cunningham, MD, MPH, FACSAEI: Carolinas Simulation Center Atrium HealthDescription: The general surgery residency and emergency medicine residency programs at Atrium Health collaborated with Carolinas Simulation Center (CSC) to provide interprofessional trauma simulation sessions. Due to COVID restrictions, sessions were offered virtually using a video conferencing platform, CSC’s learning management system, and a recorded pediatric trauma simulation that was staged for a previous project. Residents were shown small sections of the trauma video starting with the pre-hospital report. After each video section the residents were asked in the debriefs what they thought went well, what they would do differently, and what they felt the trauma teams’ next actions should be. Key teaching points included role identification, team communication, and the foundations for trauma management.

Integration of Telehealth and Standardized Patients with GME, UME, SoN, Hospital Teams and BeyondSpeakers: Jesika S. Gavilanes, MA; Jill D’Aubery; Donn Spight, MD, FACS; Tru Chatelain; Corey MacMillian; Emma VickAEI: Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU)Description: This interactive session was facilitated by the Oregon Health & Science University Standardized Patient Program and Leadership. A live telehealth session was demonstrated by Dr. Donn Spight, MD, OHSU Simulation Medical Director, and Jill D’Aubery, Standardized Patient. After the demonstration, Tru Chatelain, SP Program Manager, Emma Vick, SP Trainer, and Corey MacMillan, SimOps Specialist (who facilitated the complex technological components of their program) provided lessons learned.

2022 ACS Surgical Simulation SummitChicago, ILMarch 3-5, 2022

The American College of Surgeons Program for Accreditation of Education Institutes is offering opportunities for presentation of original paper, collaborative works, innovation, fellow and MORE Track presentations at the Annual ACS Surgical Simulation Summit on March 3-5, 2022, in Chicago, IL. The abstract submission deadline is 11:59 (CST) Thursday, September 9, 2021.

MORE Track @ the 2022 ACS Surgical Simulation Summit

For many years , the Administration and Management (A&M) Committee has programmed a full block of sessions at the Annual Surgical Simulation Summit titled the MORE Track (Management, Operations, Research, and Education), which offers distinctive content for all simulation center personnel.

The MORE Track abstract category is returning this year to draw the most current, cutting edge abstract proposals from administration and management colleagues in the field for review and use in the 2022 MORE Track programming.

This submission type is located under the Category of Abstract. Select your abstract category carefully for either the standard Annual Surgical Simulation Summit options or the MORE program. Abstract submissions for the MORE program are reviewed separately from Annual Summit submissions.

Abscess ModelJulie Hartman, DC, MS, CCRP, CHSEOperations ManagerCenter for Procedural Skills and SimulationUniversity of Iowa Health Care

Training learners on treating an abscess is an activity that lends itself to a hands-on experience. We have used this ‘homemade’ abscess model for a range of learners from urgent care providers to surgeons. Those who have treated real patients commented that this model is surprisingly realistic and give the opportunity to practice injections, lancing, flushing, extraction, and suturing.

For each abscess you will need:• 1 chicken thigh with skin• 1 balloon (9’’ or 11’’ size)• Condiments of various types (we tend to use

mayonnaise, mustard, and/or ketchup)• Syringe (we usually use a disposable 20 ml)

Directions:

1. Using the syringe, fill a balloon with condiment of your choice. If you are creating a specific type of abscess you can modify the condiments to achieve the desired color. Fill the balloon so it is approximately the size of a ping pong ball. Tie a knot when balloon is the desired size.

2. Balloons can be prepared several days in advance and stored in a refrigerator until needed.

3. When preparing for learners, carefully separate the skin from the muscle of the chicken thigh. Slide balloon under skin and give to learners.

4. After administering lidocaine or other pain reliver (Image 1), learners can make a small incision through the skin and the abscess ‘capsule’ (balloon). Using gauze they can carefully express the contents of the balloon (Image 2) and may follow up with irrigation. Learners can also use forceps to remove the capsule and do appropriate wound-care follow-up, depending on the skills being taught.

5. When complete, instructors should dispose of all materials in accordance with their facility’s regulations.
