April 2019

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

We’re halfway through Lent and it is exciting to see our Lenten

disciplines taking effect in our lives, and it is exciting to see the

demolition and construction activity that has begun on our

CTK campus. Perhaps the demolition and construction can

serve as a useful metaphor for the spiritual disciplines of Lent –

as we seek to dismantle old habits and mindsets, making way

for the new things God is doing in and through us, individually

and collectively!

I encourage you to remain steadfast in your Lenten disciplines

and to take advantage of the extra worship opportunities that

abound in this season. I am going to fast from my normal

letter format and simply share a prayer from my heart, that I

wrote back in 2013. I pray that it will be a blessing to you on

your Lenten journey.

Peace,

Pastor Chris

A Lenten Prayer of Confession

Dear Lord,

We are individualistic people, and we so often think about ourselves and our own needs.

We confess that we often approach our faith from the standpoint of what we can get out of it

instead of what we put into it. Help us to serve, and to worry about giving instead of getting.

We confess that we treat our prayer life and devotions as “add-ons” when there is time, and still

expect them to all be meaningful. Help us to be in daily conversation with you, and help us to

stop doing all the talking. Help us to be “process-oriented” and not “results-oriented.”

We confess that we approach worship with a consumer mindset, worrying about what we like

and what “feeds us.” Help us to concern ourselves with how to give you the worship you

deserve, using whatever words and music we have for the day. Help us to know that you like it

whenever your children worship you, and you even like the stuff we do not.

We confess that we are often either too busy or too timid to share the good news that dwells

within us. Help us to be bold in sharing your steadfast love and grace with those around us.

We confess that we often do not feel like showing up, or participating, or paying attention. We

give you thanks that Jesus showed up for us at Calvary. We give you thanks that he was

obedient to your will, even though he didn’t feel like it. Help us to follow Jesus and his cross.

We give you thanks that you love and forgive us, even when we fail. Still, help us to repent. Yet,

thank you for your steadfast love and mercy, which never runs out. We really need it. You know

this even better than we do.

Help us to engage Lent and your suffering and death, so that Easter and the joy of your

resurrection may be experienced in even greater contrast.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Sisters and Brothers,

There’s a lot happening at

CTK and on council. Here’s

just a sample of what we’re

working on:

• Managing the loan process and other

financial components related to our

building project

• Developing new documentation to help

ministry teams bring volunteers onboard

and get ministry done more effectively

today

• Envisioning how ministry will be done at

CTK in the future, and what our needs and

expectations will be

• Working with the office and Property

teams to improve our discovery process for

groups that want to make use of our facility

• Evaluating our Property repair and

replacement list, prioritizing it, and putting

together a plan to fund the various needs

We are also beginning to prepare for the

June semi annual meeting, at which we’ll

elect new council members. The

Nominating Committee will be coming

together in April for a time of discernment

and deliberation. Please pray for them as

they strive to put together a candidate slate

for your consideration.

Looking ahead to summer, Council fully

supports the decision by the Worship and

Music Team, made with significant input

from the Ministry Team leaders and

congregation members, to move to a

combined Sunday worship service at 10 AM

beginning May 19, and continuing through

September 1. We will continue to make use

of the “Bread of Life” worship setting, which

has been our practice, and will have

opportunity to experience special musical

offerings by members and guests. We look

forward to seeing you in worship regularly.

Council wants to offer special thanks to the

Facilities Planning Team and members past

and present who have given their time and

talents to help bring our vision for new

facilities space to completion. We also give

thanks to our members, led by Diane

Clancy, who have helped us say farewell to

members Bruce Hutchinson and Allan

Doctor through their hard work in preparing

receptions for family and friends. And finally

we give thanks for those who came out for

the last minute March property day to help

organize storage spaces and get us ready for

construction. Chuck Reid, John Smith, Bill

Hagen, Henry Hagen, Jim Freund, Richard

Landers, Fred Hagemeister, Lisa Rahmlow

and Wayne Lowe.

As we prepare for Holy Week and our

observance of Jesus’ passion, death and

resurrection, we encourage you to take

advantage of all the opportunities we have

for worship and service at CTK. Give thanks

to the Lord - for God is good! Say thanks to

your fellow members who you catch doing

good. And say thanks to our pastors and

staff who share the good news through

preaching and music and administration.

Council meets the fourth Monday of the

month at 7 PM.

Peace,

Brent Kemp

JOINED TOGETHER -

AND DEFINITELY GROWING!

As you have seen, the new year has brought new growth to CTK. Construction on our new education and meeting space is officially underway, with demolition of the existing structure completed the week of March 18, and site preparation beginning the week of March 25. Century Construction has shared their proposed timeline for construction. If all goes according to plan we will be moving in to the new space in August, and we plan to be fully occupied in time for the new program year on Rally Sunday. Now that construction is underway you will be asked to stay out of the construction zone until we are invited for a first look by the builder. Please observe the “no entry” fencing! We’ll be celebrating the beginning of construction with a groundbreaking service on Sunday, April 14 (Palm Sunday) at 10:30am. Bishop Bob Humphrey will be with us to bring greetings from the wider church and to share in this moment of celebration.

Thanks to all who have given of their time and energy to get us this far:

• to our members, who have participated in prayer and contribution to the Joined Together and Growing campaign;

• to the Facilities Planning Team - Keith Amrhein, Richard Riedel (Construction Lead), Bill Hagen (Construction Assistant, liaison

to Church Council) Sarah Hoyle, Graham Lohr, Pastor Randy Lohr, Chuck Reid, Patty Young, Duff Young and CTK members who have previously served on the team or provided assistance including Greg Lambert, Travis Sabalewski, and Jack Shearer.

• to the Joined Together and Growing planning teams

With thanksgiving, CTK Council

EL SALVADOR MISSION TRIP PRESENTATION!

The Mission Team that went to El Salvador

in January will be hosting a follow-up

presentation of that experience on Sunday,

April 7, between the services, in the

fellowship hall. Coffee from the Women's

Co-op in Ahuachapan will be served - along

with an assortment of tropical fruit for the

morning's continental breakfast. Included

in the presentation will be an interactive

quiz on all things Salvadoran, a slide show

of choice pics from the week, and

video greetings from our sisters and

brothers at Cristo Rey in Santa Ana. Our

hope is to videotape parts of our gathering -

to be sent and shared with them in return.

Mark your calendars and plan to come early

- or stay a little bit longer - next Sunday,

April 7!

Please note the CTK

women’s meetings as listed

below:

Ginter Hall Bible Study will meet on Thursday,

April 11th, at 10am.

Circle of Faith is joining with the Women of

the ELCA to do a service project this spring.

CTK has chosen, from a myriad of ideas,

Project Linus, which provides “No Sew Fleece

Blankets” for children who are ill, have been

traumatized, or are in need of love and a hug.

These blankets are very simple to make and

require only some time, 1 ½ yards of fleece

(anti-pill won’t work) of your choice, a ruler,

and a sharp pair of scissors. Shortly there will

be an example in the Narthex with a page of

directions. Please stop by and take a look!

Donations are also welcome. Please note that

all of these blankets will stay in our area. So, if

you know of a child in need, please let us

know. As a reminder, Circle of Faith meets on

the 2nd Tuesday (April 9th) and 4th Tuesday

(April 23rd) of the month at 10am in the

conference room. We will be working on our

project at the first meeting and having a Bible

study at our second meeting for the next few

months. Please join us!

The Holy Tearers will meet on Tuesday, April

16th at 9am. The quilting group makes beautiful

quilts of love for donation to various groups.

The quilters could use sheets for backing of the

quilts, any size or color will be useful. We hope

you will join us.

All women of Christ The King are members of

the Women of the ELCA. Go to the website

www.womenoftheelca.org to learn more about

the organization. Please contact Sarah Gagnon,

Sara Hagemeister or Nancy Tyler for more

details.

Save the Date!

The next servant

event at Lutheran

World Relief

Warehouse will be

April 24-26, 2019. We

will travel to New

studying the story of salvation—the book of Genesis. Please join us!

Contact Pastor Liz Yates for more information!

There has been a change to the way we

are ordering flowers for worship

services. See the instructions posted by

the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board

across from the mailboxes.

We still need nursery ministers at both

worship services. Please consider

volunteering for the nursery one Sunday.

There is a sign-up sheet on the nursery

GOOD SAMARITAN MINISTRIES

Good Samaritan Ministries is a

Christian-focused, addiction recovery,

and career training center located on

Hull Street in Richmond. Christ the

King has been providing 12-14 frozen

casseroles each month for the past

several years. The recipes are are

provided and are “basic” good food.

Aluminum pans are provided and

located on the lower shelf of the cart

near the kitchen. The volunteer cook is

asked to make a casserole twice a year.

At the beginning of the month, an email

is sent to that month’s volunteers

providing the recipe for the casseroles

and the date they are due to be placed in

the freezer at church. Then the

casseroles are delivered to Good

Samaritan Ministries during the next

week. This important part of the CTK

food ministry is in need of more

volunteers. The recipes are simple and

cost is around $10-$15. To the current

volunteers - thank you for feeding the

“poor in body and spirit.” Can you help?

Please contact Dale Korneke at

[email protected] or 804-402-5007 to

help with this ministry. For more

GOOD SAMARITAN MINISTRIES -

A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY TO

HELP!

For those of you who do not have the

time and/or inclination to make a

casserole, consider this appeal: please

purchase a pan of frozen lasagna at a

grocery or big box store and place in the

church freezer OR make a cash

donation to me and I will purchase the

lasagna. Please have the lasagna in the

freezer by May 1. If this becomes a

popular option, I can add into the

rotation.

Thank you,

Dale Korneke

Fortify Your Faith!

Check Out Faith Night.

Do you ever feel like the proverbial

hamster running in a wheel? Are you so

busy with daily responsibilities that you

feel the need to overlook what is really

important? Is there always “just one

more thing” you need to squeeze into a

given day? These are the kinds of

thoughts that often take us away from

the very activities we need to recharge

ourselves, fortifying our minds, bodies,

and souls. If you are open to making a

small change in your life that can leave

you feeling spiritually fueled, Faith

Night has been created with you in

mind. Faith Night takes place the on

the second Wednesday of every month.

It begins with a meal before moving into

an activity that builds connection with

other members of CTK through

exploring a faith question together. I

usually find such events intimidating. I

struggle to put my faith experience into

words. I worry that I don’t know the

Bible well enough to contribute to a

discussion or I fear saying something

that will reveal I am actually a “bad

Christian”. But, since I was invited to

be part of the group organizing it, I felt I

had to go. Each time has been truly

wonderful. I have gotten to understand

the faith of people I see in church better,

and I have put some of my own

thoughts into words and shared them. I

have left the event feeling refreshed and

energized in my relationship with God.

The Christian Education Team would

like to extend a personal invitation to

you to come to the next Faith Night.

Our next event will be held on April 10th,

with the meal at 6:00 p.m. The activity

for that evening will be the mid-week

Lenten service. In May we will continue

with a faith formation activity on

spiritual gifts following the meal. As we

move into spring, enjoying warmer and

longer days, consider sharing some of

that “extra” time with your CTK

family…you may feel your own faith

enriched and enrich that of someone

else. – Michele Ebright

With the deepest gratitude, we would like to thank our whole Christ the King church family for your love, support, and great acts of service in the days leading up to and following the death of our beloved father, grandfather, and husband William Garnett.

Our nuclear family is small, but we are grateful to be reminded of the great gift of the church who carries us through these most difficult times. The night before my father died, I was comforted and loved by dear friends at Christ the King. At the same time, I could look in on my daughter and see her surrounded by friends loving and supporting her. In the days following and through today, I have been humbled by the countless cards and words of comfort you have offered. The presence of so many of you at his service was deeply meaningful to me and a kindness I will not forget.

We have been sustained by two things since his death, the love and support of those we hold dear and the promise of the Resurrection. Each day, we all have so many choices about how we spend our time, but relationships with all of you are what is carrying us through this tragic journey. We give thanks for each of you who choose to be with us.

With love,

Jennifer, Susanna, and Pastor Chris Carr and Mary Anne Garnett

Calling all able bodied Members –

it is really fun to drive the fancy

John Deere lawn tractor. It has

been called the “Lamborghini of

lawn mowers” by someone close

to the work. We need a couple

more people to volunteer for the

mowing team this Spring,

Summer and Fall at CTK. We

need one full commitment

member and could use a couple of

volunteers for the substitute list.

The full member commitment

team member is needed to fill 6

mowing dates between March 25th

and October 27th. Any substitutes

would fill in where needed for the

season. Typically mowing

day/time is agreed upon between

the two team members assigned

for the week. This doesn’t mean

that the mowing needs to be done

on a Saturday morning. Some

teams prefer to get the work done

on a Friday for the upcoming

weekend. Generally, the teams

alternate between running the

tractor and using the push mower

and the string trimmer. We look

forward to you joining the mowing

team – Thanks for your

consideration.

CARITAS May 4-11, 2019 Transforming Lives, Restoring Dignity

Can you imagine waking up one day to

realize that everything in your life has

changed? The things you had worked

for and acquired were all gone? Your

home, your job, spouse and children,

friends and family, all gone?... None of

it is there anymore. For most people in

this situation, it didn’t happen

overnight. For some, there was one

traumatic event that caused a shift their

lives. For others, a series of events or

poor choices that led to their loss.

The point is, “Life can be very fragile”.

And in a society that values strength,

sometimes we don’t recognize or

respond when someone is feeling weak

or vulnerable. The stories told by many

people who are homeless reveal that

they too once “had it all”, but somehow

it all slipped away.

In Matthew 25:40 Jesus said, “Truly I

tell you, just as you did it to the least of

these who are members of my family,

you did it to me.”

During the week of May 4-11, we at

CTK will again have an opportunity to

lift up those in our midst who are

among the most vulnerable. It doesn’t

matter how or why they are homeless,

only that someone recognizes their

need and responds with care and

compassion.

Last year, the CARITAS program

transitioned the men to a permanent

site, helping make their day to day lives

more manageable. The requirements to

support the program are a little different

now. We will still ask for donations of

food and water, supplies for making

lunches and monetary donations to

purchase perishables. We will prepare

lunches and deliver them each day to

their facility, The Healing Place, and we

will cook and serve them dinner on

Saturday May 11. Additionally, we can

provide toiletry kits as before and

choose one night during the week to

visit with them.

This is our opportunity to recognize

Jesus in those around us and respond

with care and Love. Thank you to

everyone who has supported this

ministry over the years and all who will

support CARITAS this year to help

people move from crisis to stability.

Please be alert for more information to

come to learn how you may participate

and support this valuable ministry.

Blessings, Jim Freund

The Food Pantry

Sunday for April

falls on Final Four

Weekend of the

NCAA Basketball

Tournament. There will be two bins in

the narthex to receive your donations of

food pantry items: one for each of the

teams that will be in the Championship

Game on Monday, April 8. Those teams

will be decided Saturday night, Sat. 6,

and revealed the following morning in

worship. The team with the largest

amount of donated food and pantry
