Blackbirds Dubbed Fittest Team (Oct 20) At the end of the inaugural Scotiabank Super Team Fitness Challenge, the UWI Blackbirds finished in the number

one spot ahead of Bayfield Boys and the Barbados Defence Force. The challenge,

staged in St. Philip, included two 5 km runs, separated by a 4 km walk, a 2 lap swim of a defined course in the chilly and choppy seas

of Skeet’s Bay and a hill accentuated cycle ride. The relay style event culminated with a challenging obstacle course.

Starting at Foursqare, Kemar Norgrove got

the ball rolling for the six-member unit, completing his run in 2nd place. Sandra

Murray (Alumni) subsequently dropped a few positions after her walk but the Blackbirds quickly rebounded through a

strong run by Jerome Blackett, reaching the shores of Skeet’s Bay in 2nd place.

The Blackbirds continued to swap positions

with competitors as the race progressed. National swimmer and student Raymond Edwards took over the lead with a 30 second cushion after his swim, but Orlando Browne could not face the heat on his ride, slipping behind by 10 seconds to 2nd place. On the last

leg however, there was an air of confidence in Shawn Chandler’s experience in military

training, as he took to the obstacle course. Chandler did not disappoint, bringing the Blackbirds through to finish on top the podium, 22 seconds ahead of Bayfield Boys.

Freshers Hoist UWIFA Trophy (Oct 24) Hundreds flocked to the UWI Hockey Turf to witness the highly anticipated finals of the UWIFA 7-a-side football competition, which featured Jamaica (Freshers) and Egypt in the title match, while

Uruguay and Colombia fought for third spot. With a music-filled atmosphere and students

seizing an opportunity to sell various snacks and drinks to patrons, it was left to the four teams to entertain.

After some exhibition games, Uruguay salvaged some pride with a victory over a depleted Colombian team, to secure the bronze. This set the tone for the evening.

Already creating history by being the first

Freshers team to appear in a UWIFA finals,

the youngsters led by Akeem Maloney continued to impress, as the finals got

underway. They took the lead twice, firstly through a Romario Watson item, after some constructive midfield play, and then a

Warren Sayers penalty. However, Egypt equalised almost immediately on both

occasions with a brace from Corey Barrow. Fans erupted in exhilaration with each goal

scored.

Locked 2-2 at the end of regulation and extra

time, both teams took to the penalty spot to

decide the match. Inseparable after the first three spot kicks, a crucial miss in sudden death penalties by Egypt saw ecstasy in the Jamaican camp, as they captured a well deserved 2013 UWIFA Title. (Continued on page 2)

Elcock 10th in Elite Champs After becoming the Caribbean Junior Time Trial Cycling in 2008 along with a slew of

other achievements to date, Russel Elcock is now riding with the big boys of the region and continues to make a name for himself. Recently, he participated in the Elite Caribbean Cycling Championships hel d in

Curacao, finishing 10th

No Stopping UWI Cricket

(Oct 14) In their defense of the 3 major

cricketing titles captured in 2012, the Sagicor UWI cricket team has to date successfully defended their Sagicor T20 Cup on October 13, 2013.

With a target of 115, UWI comfortably cruised to 43 for 1 but lost steam, as Maple claimed 5 wickets at a cost of only 26 runs.

Carlos Brathwaite partnered with Stephen Jacobs to stabilise the UWI middle order

before Kevin McClean and Akeem Dewar successfully reached the target in dramatic fashion, getting the winning runs off the final

ball.

Brathwaite also contributed in the field, bowling impressively to take 3 for 8 from 4

overs. He was named man of the match, his

second consecutive award of this type after receiving it for the semifinals.

Blackbird Soars to Ireland Of a group of UWI netballers selected for national trials, Damisha Croney was the lone

Blackbird selected for national duty. Croney departed Barbados on Monday with the

national team, to participate in the first ever International Netball Festival in Nothern Ireland. The competition will feature teams from Botswana, St. Lucia and Northern Ireland.

Stage Set for UWI Road Race

The Academy of Sport Cave Hill is putting the final touches on this year’s edition of the

UWI Road Race, set to take place on November 10th.

Since its inception as a 6k run and walk in 2011, the Road Race was evolved to a 7k in 2012, and will now take the form of a 7k run, 5k walk and a Run for 50 Relay. The Academy will also introduce a host of activities apart

from the race, to encourage families and those not participating to come out and have some fun.
