  • first met Jimmy Dawkins at the Jazz RecordMarts 7 West Grand store. He used to come in,buy an occasional record, and check out the

chart we had on the wall of where the blues werebeing played on the South and West sides. (Thatwas before blues were heard on the North sidealthough I do recall the Aces working at the WiseFools long before the club had a blues only policy.)Jimmy regularly reported on the Chicago bluesscene to Blues Unlimited in the UK.

I eventually discovered that Jimmy was anexcellent guitarist and a unique vocalist.

He cut a few 45s for one-shot labels as anaccompanist. Once I heard him play stinginglyand sing soulfully with his uniquely quiet voice, Iknew we had to record him, which we did: threealbums of his own and others backing up DetroitJr, Mighty Joe Young, Sleepy John Estes, and CareyBell's first recording. On other labels he backedup Koko Taylor and Wild Child Butler whoseMercury recording with Jimmy was titled Keep OnDoing What Youre Doing.

Jimmy Dawkins was born October 24, 1936 inTchula, Mississippi. He was an only child who grewup in Pascagoula, MS.And started teaching him-self the guitar when he was 17.He came to Chicagoin the mid 50s eventually playing for tips at Roose-velt and Albany, then in clubs with Magic Sam,Wild Child Butler, Jimmy Rogers and mandolinistJohnny Young with whom he recorded for Arhoolie.

His own Delmark records: Fast Fingers (a nick-name he had earned) (623) with Eddie Shaw,Mighty Joe Young, Lafayette Leake; etc.; All ForBusiness (634) with Big Voice/BB Odom, OtisRush, Sonny Thompson, etc, and Blisterstring (641)with Jimmy Johnson, Sonny Thompson et al.

Fast Fingers was only the third blues album towin the Grand Prix due Disque of the Hot Club ofFrancethe legendary French orgnization's prize

dating back to the early 1930s. The HCF was bestknown for their promotion of Django ReinhardtsQuintet of the Hot Club of France

Jimmy toured all of Europe in 1972 and 1973with the American Folk Blues Festival. Footageexists from the American Blues Festival TV showsdone in Germany and England each year duringtheir tours. Jimmy did further recording for Isabel,Earwig, and Ichiban.

On his Leric label he released sides by LittleJohnny Christian, Tail Dragger, Queen Sylvia,Vance Kelly, Nora Jean, Big Mojo Elem, and SisterMargo & the Healing Choir. These have beenissued by Delmark on The Leric Story (808),some tracks for the first time, others only previ-ously on scarce 45s.

In recent years Jimmy has been less active, nolonger interested in the relatively low pay of theChicago blues bars, but still appearing at BuddyGuys club, Legends, and various out-of-town gigs.

Jimmy passed away April 10th.Thanks to Jim Feeney, whose liner note for

Jimmys Blisterstring album contained much ofthe hard info in this article. BK

    The Leric Story (DELMARK 808)

JIMMY DAWKINSJimmy Dawkins was my personal favoriteChicago blues guitarist. Not only did he playwith an absolutely distinctive and devastatingheavy West Side Chicago blues guitar attack,he also played with taste, restraint, subtlety, beauty, and great feeling. He had impeccabletiming, knowing when to lay back and not forcethe music, and then when to add his immedi-ately recognizable slashing, biting, & aggres-sive guitar riffs. He was a very unique and deepsongwriter, and also had an under-appreciat-ed, laid back but intense vocal style with muchemotion. Although Jimmys no-nonsense, men-acing, dark, & introspective playing is definitelynot for the casual listener, blues diehards andall guitarists should experience the Dawkinsguitar tone, timing, and deliverydeep blueswith a feeling!

Jimmy will be much misseda very humble, yet proud man, who was always very friendly, re-spectful, and accommodating to the Delmarkfamily. Jimmy was writing songs up until thevery end, and was planning to record one lastalbum as a leader for Delmark. Alas, we thank-fully will always have many essential Dawkinsrecordings as a leader with us from his long, illustrious career. Be sure to check out thenever before released 69 recording from ArthurBig Boy Crudup, Sunny Road that just cameout on Delmark that features the tasteful andsympathetic backing lead guitar playing fromDawkins. • By the time Lurrie Bell (born December 13, 1958) was in his earlytwenties, he was the Next Great Hope of Chicago blues. Wellsteeped in the idiom via his harmonica great father Carey Bell, hisGodfather Eddie C. Campbell, and a circle of well-known friends andrelatives, he made his studio debut in 1977, recording behind hisfather (later issued as Heartaches And Pain, Delmark 666) andCampbell, drafted to add funk to the bass line on the title track ofEddies King Of The Jungle album while on hand to watch his fatherparticipate. A 1978 trip to Berlin with the New Generation Of ChicagoBlues package and a stint with Koko Taylor gave him his first realroad exposure. In 1982 he and Carey recorded Son Of A Gun forRooster Blues. Life seemed full of possibilities.

But what Lurrie calls my trials are well-known (many arechronicled in the remarkable DVD Mercurial Son and a chapter inDavid Whiteis excellent book Chicago Blues: Portraits and Stories):substance abuse, living on the streets, then, as he was regaining hisbearings, the loss of his twin babies a few weeks apart, his devotedlady Susan Greenberg and finally his father in 2007.

I have told Lurrie more than once that he is the most inspirationalperson I know. Its not just that hes persevered through such adaunting barrage. Its that he never lets his knees buckle; its closeenough for horseshoes to all sunny side up and indefatigablypositive. Lurrie has held on to faith and music for sustenance. Withthose allies, and the love and support of an impressive roster offriends and family, he has managed to rack up accolades, recognitionlike multiple Living Blues Artist and Guitarist Of The Year awards anda 3Arts Grant, and more raves and renown for his recent CD TheDevil Aint Got No Music (including the French LAcademie du JazzPrix Du Blues Award for Best Blues Recording of 2012) and his trackson both volumes of the highly acclaimed Chicago Blues: A LivingHistory gatherings (netting a Grammy nomination).

As part of the belated stabilization and renaissance of his career,Lurries last two CDs (on his Aria BG label, named for his survivingdaughter) have been about stretching him (successfully) to showcasethe breadth as well as the magnitude of his art (and to fulfill a long-held goal of his and Susans of recording some of the gospel onwhich he was raised as a church musician during his southernchildhood years). While Lurrie demonstrated convincingly howinteresting his facets can be and how boldly he can meet artisticchallenges, for this project he just wanted to get back to the solidfoundation of Chicago-styled traditional guitar blues, done with hisrare blend of reverence, involvement and individuality and framedlargely by his working band, in a studio he knows well. As Lurriesings in the title track, its about this comfortable way of beingmyself.

So Lurrie got back to basics. He went through 200 songssubmitted to suit his expressed tastes, and picked a balancedprograms worth of keepers. With a little nudging, he wrote a nicelyvaried three more. 24 Hour Blues is a loping shuffle with a grooveevocative of Magic Slim, recorded on the sad day of our longtimefriends passing (February 21) and dedicated to him. South Side ToRiverside is a driving Albert Collins meets Howlin Wolf meets JamesBrown instrumental. The Blues In My Soul is an intimate, reflectiveslow minor affirmation. He fronted his regular line-up. Keyboardmaster Roosevelt Purifoy has been a frequent part of Delmarksessions. Koko Taylor alum Melvin Smith has been a stalwart onbass. For drummer (and Magic Sams nephew) Willie Hayes, thisproject was his first musical heavy lifting since some medical issues;the relief, joy and inspiration he too provided for all with his sure-handed, untiring propulsion of the dynamics and grooves waspalpable. Lurrie loves him some deep Chicago blues harp, and hasa high level mutual admiration society with major advocate MatthewSkoller, who has produced or had a major hand in the lions share ofLurries much praised recent output and shared many a stage.Matthew brought more comfort along with his accomplished andnotably empathetic acoustic and amplified support to half of this CD.We brought in horns led by rising trumpeter Marques Carroll to top offtwo tracks.

Ive known Lurrrie since he was an adolescent and was at those77 sideman sessions. There was always respect and rapport, andLurrie, his manager Rick Bates and I discussed a collaboration forwhat seemed like ages. Eventually the stars lined up right. Lurriescameo a year ago on Campbells Spider Eating Preacher (Delmark819) gave us a chance to forge a working studio relationship. BluesIn My Soul was a joy to produce. Everyone did their homework, wasready to work as a team and wanted to help Lurrie do somethingspecial. A lot of love for Lurrie went into this album, and it registered.During rehearsal he was moved to give a well-earned speech to hisband about how much he appreciated their professionalism andwanted them to know it right then and there. As for his own part, itsclear that he chose these songs for a reason, and not only feels themenough to take ownership but enjoys playing them. He applies hisrevered economy (as a true master of finding THE right note, ratherthan unleashing a shotgun charge of them), his expressive, vibrato-tinged and personally approached vocals, and his hard-earnedstature as an artist who captures the elemental essence and depth ofthe blues as well as anyone today. Recording engineer and Mixer-In-Chief Steve Wagner, whose personal and musical familiarity withLurrie and me were major assets, has been at the label for all five ofLurries Delmark albums; he quickly began telling us this was goingto be the best. Well let the listener judge that and ponder just howmuch deep blues power Lurrie Bell can generate in his comfort zone.

Lurrie Bell: Blues In My Soul

    7

  • By 1975 the Art Ensemble of Chicago was enjoying an unusualpopularity. Originally an outgrowth of the Roscoe Mitchell Quartet, thegroup was among the few free jazz ensembles in the world (along withthe Cecil Taylor Unit and Sun Ras Arkestra) to attract a significantaudience. The Art Ensemble emphasized layered percussion, ritual, roots in Africa and an expressionist take on the blues. The music camecouched in a strongly theatrical presentation, with a clearsocial/aesthetic program Great Black Music, Ancient to the Future perhaps Sun Ras own program made clear.

The Art Ensembles success gave Mitchell both tremendous freedomand opportunity. Along with heightened profile, the Art Ensemble madethe cultural dimensions of free jazz so prominent that Mitchell was freeto operate without them in his activities away from the group, eliminatingthose discursive elements from his work.

Away from the face paint and drums of the AEC (Mitchell was, afterall, the one not in costume), he would become more strongly associatedwit the influence of the classical avant-garde (both European andAmerican Stockhausen and Cage) than virtually any other musician injazz, save perhaps for his friend and fellow Chicagoan Anthony Braxton.Mitchell would perform with MEV (Musica Electronica Viva), theimprovising electronic ensemble with Frederic Rzewski and RichardTeitelbaum, and he would also lead groups like the ensemble presentedhere as the Roscoe Mitchell Quartet.

The music heard here is genuinely radical, with much that mightimmediately appeal to a listener deliberately stripped away. Mitchellssound is abrasive, his notes distorted and twisting away from anyconventional sense of pitch. Save for Tnoona, theres a lack of thereferential whether to harmony, rhythm, melody as part of anelaborated sense of continuity. Some of the pieces might infer anabsolute formalism, and yet such architecture is largely absent, relocated to chance procedures. The musics emotional expression maybe intense, but the emotions are also private and discontinuous. Theydont assume anything like linear, narrative continuity of mood. If the cry

of the blues lives on in Mitchells alto, its been radically de-contextualized.

If the AEC formed a key part of Mitchells expression, this group and later versions of the Sound Ensemble would permit him toemphasize the purely sonic interests apparent in his earlier work. Hereconventional rhythmic roles are dispensed with the group consisting ofthe chamber-like ensemble of guitar and piano along with Mitchellssaxophones and the trombone of George Lewis. The absence of a kitdrummer is c\crucial, no cymbals to blur the groups mix of overtones, animmediate shift in the pattern of listening.

If the instrumentation of the group is unusual, though, the assemblyof the group looks to both the roots and branches of Chicagos AACM,the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. It includesthe movements founder, pianist Muhal Richard Abrams, mentor toMitchell and a generation of adventurous Chicago musicians. It alsolooks to an emerging generation, the brilliant young trombonist GeorgeLewis and the Detroit native Spencer Barefield on guitar. A key part ofAbrams own music was its acceptance of a rich European inheritance most specifically French Impressionism an insistence that AmericanBlack Music inherited the music of the world. The lesson was not lost onMitchell, Braxton, or Lewis, each of whom has redefined the possibilitiesof jazz by refusing to limit its sources, its contents or its ultimate formalscale.

If the structure of this music is most clearly defined by Mitchellsleadership and purposes, the most striking instrumental performancemust be that of the youthful George Lewis, just 23 at the time of this, hisfirst recording. Part of what makes this recording special is that itsGeorge Lewis debut, recorded in the year prior to his work with theCount Basie band, the Braxton quartet and his Solo Trombone Record(also in the Sackville reissue series). Its a tribute to both Mitchellsgenerosity and Lewis talent that the trombonist plays such a significantrole in the music released from the two Toronto concerts.

Studebaker Johns Maxwell Street Kings Kingsville JukinLike the classic auto that he named himself after when first

embarking on his prolific blues journey, Studebaker John keeps righton rolling, offering devotees of tough, no-nonsense Chicago blues arollicking, raucous ride vividly conjuring up the idioms hallowedheyday.

John was proud to be old school long before the term becamefashionable, combining full-bodied harmonica, crashing slide guitar, and no-holds-barred vocals into a convincing whole. Hes also atalented songwriter. Spirited echoes of his Windy City blues heroescan be detected floating through his songs, but theres no doubttheyre all his. After more than four decades in the blues business,Studebaker John has paid his dues in full.

Chicago native John Grimaldi was drawn to the harmonica whenhe was seven years old, picking up his fathers chromatic and blowinghis first notes. A couple of years later, the lad was a helper for his oldmans construction plumbing firm. There was a job on Maxwell Street, the legendary open-air market, and during a break Grimaldi happenedacross Big John Wrencher, holding musical court with a smallamplified combo. The one-armed harpist didnt require a fancychromatic to wail, wringing bent notes from a standard diatonic model.

Thats how Studebaker John discovered the blues. It wasnt an overnight conversion. During junior high and high

school, John played drums in amateur rock and roll combos, at timedoubling simultaneously on harp without using a rack. He addedvocals to his musical arsenal as well. The bluesier emissaries of theBritish Invasion left their mark. By the late 60s, John decided toconcentrate on blues, leaving the less serious stuff behind. Muddy,Elmore, Little Walter, and the Wolf had seduced him permanently.

The last piece of the puzzle fell into place at an all-ages showstarring the lovably rowdy Hound Dog Taylor. When Hound Dogunleashed his blistering slide, making magic on the humblest ofguitars (making it all the more cosmic, fellow bottleneck master J.B.Hutto sat in that day), John knew he had to follow suit. Before long, hed mastered the slide guitar as well.

Maxwell Street became Johns musical stomping ground when thatlegendary thoroughfare was really jumping. You could buy anything yourheart desired on that delightfully gritty avenue, the accompanying bluessoundtrack coming as a free bonus. Big Walter Horton, Johnny Littlejohn, andplenty more were right there in the flesh, tools of their trade in hand, pumpingout raw, invigorating blues on the bustling street. Big Walters savvy adviceto John about the importance of developing a style of his own resonateddeeply. Just to make sure folks didnt forget his singular sobriquet, the youngbluesman drove a Studebaker Lark (he now pilots a 1963 Studebaker SilverHawka cool car for a cool cat).

Learning his trade took John all over the South and West Side. He sat inat the Checkerboard with Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, mounted the stage atTheresas, and gigged at holes-in-the-wall where anything could happen andsometimes did. John formed the first incarnation of his rowdy combo, theHawks, and got down to business as a professional bandleader. Most of theblues greats were still active & maintaining their citywide followings, but Johnpersevered, making inroads on the North Side as the decade progressed.

In 2010, Studebaker John and his Maxwell Street Kingsguitarist RickKreher and drummer Steve Cushing (the longtime host of National PublicRadios Blues Before Sunrise)joined the Delmark Records family. Theirfirst storming release, Thats The Way You Do, stands as one of Johnsfieriest releases to date, a joyous celebration of the raw, relentless soundsthat once defined the Maxwell Street experience. John followed it on Delmarkwith 2012s aptly christened Old School Rockin, another generous slab ofglorious boogies and blues, stripped-down and sweaty.

Kingsville Jukin is Studebaker Johns third Delmark offering, snarlingand uncompromising like its pair of predecessors. Kreher (one of thestalwarts in Muddy Waters last great band during the early 80s) and shufflespecialist Cushing are back on board, as is bassist Bob Halaj (formerly withBig Twist and the Mellow Fellows and the Chicago Rhythm & Blues Kings),who keeps the grooves cooking on the bottom.

With Studebaker John seated behind the wheel, a righteous bluesjourney is assured. Bill Dahl

As a sideman on records by Tom Waits, Allen Toussaint, DianaKrall and John Zorn, guitaristMarc Ribot serves the music whileretaining his highly personal sound and approach, but it's asa leader where his singular aesthetic is best on display. Suchis the case with Your Turn, the second album from his trioCeramic Dog. Running the gamut from re-workings of early20th century protest songs (Bread and Roses), primal bluesrock that puts modern imitators to shame (Lies My Body ToldMe) and a totally warped take on Take Five, Ribot and com-pany unite these seemingly disparate influences with clarityand power. Even at the most conventional rock moments onthis record, Ribot's playing spares the listener tiresome guitarcliches and tropes, favoring an approach thats more RobertQuine meets Eric Dolphy. Drummer Ches Smith, whose workwith fellow New York guitarist Mary Halvorson is a textbook onmodern jazz drumming, and bassist Shahzad Ismaily are per-fect foils, deftly switching between feels (note Smiths swingfeel on The Kid Is Back!) and providing sympathetic and an-tagonistic support to Ribot. The music on this record defiesneat categorization, and thats part of its beauty. SM

  • It was Sunday, September 19, a gray overcast day in Los Angeles,as they used to say on Dragnet. A small bungalow in a residential areaof Santa Monica had been procured for this recording date. A superb, freshly tuned Yamaha grand occupied most of the living room. Themikes were in place, and recording engineer Cecil Spiller had hisequipment set up in the kitchen. I had been taping some ArthurMarshall material for my old friend, producer Paul Affeldt, in themorning. Paul and I took a lunch break and went out for some chili ata nearby coffee shop.

When we returned Art had already arrived, having had a few hoursrest after the previous nights concert at the Wilshire Ebell Theater, andwas into his session. As we entered the kitchen we heard thatunmistakable piano style. After brief greetings we let Art get back towork. He knew exactly what he was doing. He had a list of somevintage Bessie Smith tunes. He played them without retakes, completely absorbed, a rhythm section in his right foot, his eyes oftenclosed, his head bobbing to the music. When he finished his program,he said he wanted to do retakes of Alexanders Ragtime Band andCake Walkin Babies and proceeded to cut them very satisfactorily.

Then came the playbacks. Art sat in a chair in the dining room, closed his eyes, and gave full attention to the music, with thatirrepressible foot going again. He had doubts only about YonderComes the Blues, but Paul, Pat, and I assured him it sounded fine, sohe let it stand. There it was; the session you are about to hear.

By then it was late afternoon. Pat and Paul headed north towardhome in Ventura, and I drove Art back to L.A. He wanted to stop aminute at the Wilshire Ebell to pick up a book he had left there thenight before, the story of Little Brother Montgomery. Little Brother hadbeen a featured performer there Friday evening in the Night With theBlues concert, and had personally inscribed a copy for Art. He sooncame striding back to the car, treasured book in hand.

Hodes is friendly and communicative, and it was a treat to hearhim talk about his home in Park Forest, Illinois (30 miles south ofChicago), Hull House (famous settlement house in Chicago, established by the great humanitarian Jane Addams, where helearned to play piano), his recent European tour with A Night in NewOrleans (he and Ralph Sutton were the featured Piano Greats on thattour, and Hodes spoke of Sutton with fondness and respect), and hismusical tastes. He talks with the same kind of sense and convictionthat his piano playing conveys. As for his listening preferences, he stillgoes back to Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Armstrong, and sometimesTatum. I liked his apt remark about that other great Art: Sometimeshe goes into a few bars of swinging Fats Waller stuff, but then hesuddenly goes into his act.

I left Art Hodes where he was staying with an old friend to get afew hours rest before catching the morning plane back to Chicago.

THE ARTIST:When you put this record on your turntable you are going to

hear some of the finest jazz piano artistry around today. He is oneof the real legends of Chicago jazz, a man of apparentlyinexhaustible energy and enthusiasm. Physically slight, wiry, alert, operating at a level that would be remarkable in a man half his age,it seems incredible that this spry dynamo of a man has been aprofessional musician for over half a century. It is said that Artpractices yoga. If so, he is certainly a vital testimonial for thatvenerable Eastern discipline.

This is not the place for a biography of Hodes, which some dayshould be written. (How about an autobiography, Art?) Suffice it tosay that this man, born in Kiev, Russia, and transported to Chicagoat an early age where he grew up and absorbed the developingjazz heritage of the South Side, became one of the few authenticwhite exponents of the blues. Not only that, but like his fellowChicagoan, Eddie Condon, he became a spokesman for jazzmusicians through his unique writing style (has anyone writtenmore articles and liner notes?) and his untiring efforts as organizerof jazz bands and record dates. He was a pioneer jazz disc jockeyin New York City in the forties, and while there he published one ofthe finest little jazz magazines of its (or all) time: The Jazz Record;(stories by and about the jazz musicians themselves, including agoodly number by Hodes; which is being published by CaliforniaPress under the title Selections From The Gutter) . . .he has ofcourse recorded prolifically, and in recent years has madenumerous successful concert tours at home and abroad. Certainlyfew men have done more for the real jazz.

Art Hodes the pianist is simply incomparable. There may beothers with more dazzling techniques, but you will not find anothermusician who plays with more sensitivity, conviction, and powerfulemotion. He is seemingly incapable of mindless keyboardautomation; everything he lays down has a concentration, intensity, and internal logic that grabs you- and never fails to moveyou. Hes never trite, never ostentatious.

Listen! If anyone ever played from the heart, its Hodes. Histenderly voiced chords melt you. He gets in those sharp rhythmicjabs that make you sit up and start stomping your foot along withhim. On the fast numbers he gets a kind of crazy excitedsyncopation going in both hands that is a trademark with him. Heachieves a sort of bittersweet bite with those calculated slurs thatalmost convince you that he has more than 88 keys at his disposal.

Hes got it all together. Hes with it all the way. Hodes is, well,Hodes. Therell never be another like him. - Bill Mitchell, 1977
