High Consistency Pulping

Helico pulpers provide excellentdefibering by reducing good fiber lossesand saving heat, energy and chemicals.Further advantages include superior inkdetachment from white waste paper andbetter physical properties for virgin fiber.

The Kadant HeliPoire combines the bestfeatures of the Helico pulper and theDumping Poire or Batch Scavenger. It isan efficient detrashing system forcontaminant removal without breakingup non-fibrous materials – ofteneliminating the need for course screens.

Low and Medium Consistency Pulping

The EU Batch Medium/Low ConsistencyPulper is also used on virgin pulp. ItsMid-Con rotor allows consistencyincreases.

Flotation deinking is required for thebest removal of inks, stickies, andash in that order of effectiveness.Often 2 loops incorporating 2 stagesof flotation are utilized in theprocess of deinking for fine tissuegrades.

Washing is required in the processused for tissue in order to removeash, ink and stickies.

Kadant supplies the requiredequipment for flotation andwashing.

• Kadant DNT for the highest efficiency in ash or clay removal

This equipment provides the lowestoperating costs, highest efficiencies,and lowest fiber losses.

Flotation Deinking andWashing

Kneading and dispersion areemployed for the dispersion andsizing of ink and stickies to preparethe pulp for optimum removal ofthese contaminants. The dispersersand kneaders might be installedbefore or after flotation or washingdepending on the type of furnishbeing processed.

The kneading technology supplied byKadant is proven technology forimproving tissue quality wheresoftness is a key requirement.

Kneading & Dispersion

After the stock preparation system,whether virgin or recycle, hasprovided a clean fiber furnish forintroduction to the paper machine,the pulp passes to the papermachine approach flow system.

This system must be designed toprovide the proper refining orfibrillation to the fibers. The fiberslurry must also be finallycentrifugally cleaned to remove smalldirt particles and screened to removeany oversized contaminants,normally introduced in the watercircuit or by agglomeration in themachine chest.

The screening step should bedesigned to provide positiveprotection for the machine head boxsluice and for the expensive formingfabrics on the machine.

traversing showers allow the use of lesswater at higher pressures to removestubborn contaminants withoutstreaking the sheet or damaging the fabric. Oscillating showers, such asArclineTM, provide reliable motion andcomplete and even fluid distribution for improved productivity and lowmaintenance.

Mist around tissue machines can leadto production loss due to extra clean-up time, sheet breaks and poor sheetquality. Kadant’s Mist EliminatorTM isa mist-free high pressure cleaningsystem that provides:

Felt Cleaning & Conditioning

As the use of recycled fiber increases,the cleaning of forming, press anddryer fabrics becomes even more critical. This fiber source causesgreater contamination throughoutthe process and is more difficultto remove than contaminantsassociated with virgin fiber.Therefore, cleaning systems mustbe used on a continuous basis andinclude the use of chemicals forsuccessful contaminant removal.

Kadant solutions for more difficultcleaning applications may include:

• Fabric brush assemblies with integrated rotating fabric brush and brush cleaning shower assemblies that are highly effective for removing surface contaminants from machine fabrics

• Vacuum suction box and suction pipe assemblies that provide custom dewatering and high efficiency exhausters specific to your needs

Wet end doctoring is critical to sheetformation and quality. If ignored,debris on wire/felt return rolls cancause sheet defects and reducemachine clothing life. Selection ofcorrect blade material is importantfor roll cleaning and efficientremoval of water/fines for overallreduction in roll wear.

Couch and suction roll doctoringenhances sheet consistency, reducesvariation in moisture profile. Specific blade materials such asSoftek® have been developed fordoctoring soft, wet end rolls.High efficiency wet end doctoringresults in:

• Cleaner rolls• Better sheet formation• Longer blade and roll life• Enhanced felt and wire life

The single most important wet enddoctors used on tissue machines arefor couch, suction press and pressurerolls. Double doctoring in thesepositions has revolutionized waterremoval on these rolls. Traditionalrubber wipes used extensively inthese positions actually hinder waterremoval. Double doctors not onlyremove the excess water/fines butsignificantly improve moistureprofiles, fabric life, vacuum efficiencyand sheet consistency. Sheetrewetting in these positions canbe easily prevented with doubledoctors.

seal strips.

Where appropriate, wet end tailcutters speed up the process ofthreading the sheet to the Yankee.Wet end tail cutters are equippedwith variable positioning. These canbe operator controlled or set topre-defined positions. It is importantto have good sheet edge quality toavoid costly downtime related toedge breaks during threading.A high pressure nozzle with a precisejet ensures quick thread up times.

Double Doctoring Tail Cutting

Chemical coating application onYankee Dryers plays a significant rolein sheet softness and quality. These chemicals are applied in preciseamounts to control sheet properties.The expense and impact of thesechemicals also mandates that thespray boom showers apply thesechemicals evenly and efficiently.

A properly designed systemmaintains equal pressure and volume across the spray boomlength by circulating the coatingchemicals to avoid stagnation.In addition, the nozzle design, angle,distance from the Yankee andoscillation of the spray boom ensureeven streak-free application of thechemicals.

The heart of a tissue machine,a creping doctor is where tissue getscreated. Due to the demands placedon a creping doctor, it is essentiallydifferent than any other doctor ona tissue machine. Kadant’s Tear-Dropbeam design minimizes deflection andsignificantly increases torsional rigidityreducing vibration. This becomes even more important on high loadcreping applications such as TADmachines. The industry standard HDConformaticTM Holder forms thebackbone of this doctoring system.The doctor can be machined for theYankee profile and the holder cancompensate for any variation and wearwhile in use. In addition, the patentededge relief fingers allow for adjustmentoutside the sheet while the cartridgesallow for quick blade changes andholder hygiene.

For machines producing premiumgrades, Continuous CrepeTM doctoringsystems allow for a continuous quality without the usual drop insoftness and increase in bulk. Thiscyclical quality is avoided with acontinuous feed of blade stock acrossthe Yankee thereby eliminating bladechanges.

Calender/Reel Doctoring

ProCrepe® blades bring a new levelof quality and efficiency to tissuemachines. Used on conventionalmachines, tissue makers can expectquality levels only achievable on TADmachines. In addition, these bladessignificantly enhance machineefficiency and overall runnabilityof tissue machines.

Machines using calenders after theYankee need doctors to maintainclean surfaces. Calendering operationminimizes bulk variation and thusany debris collection on the rolls cansignificantly reduce the efficiency ofsuch operation. Depending on thegrade, dust collection on calenderingrolls can cause dust to be wrappedin the sheet. This causes costlydowntime during the convertingoperation.

Reel doctoring keeps the roll surfaceclean and reduces breaks at the reeldrum. This minimizes thread upissues and related downtime.

A wide range of synthetic/compositeblade materials are available fordoctoring of high-temperaturecalenders and reel drums.

Long Life Creping Blades

Although not present on allmachines, cleaning doctorssignificantly improve the runnabilityof tissue machines by enhancingsurface characteristics of the Yankeeprior to chemical application andsheet adhesion.

Cleaning doctors enhance coatingprofiles which in turn significantlyimpacts sheet profile. In additioncleaning doctor holders can be"profiled in" to clean the edges outside the sheet where crepingholders are normally "profiled out."A new generation of self profilingholders are available for the cleaningdoctors.

Cutoff doctors are also designed withminimal deflection characteristicswhile having the ability to shed thesheet during operation. The holderdesigns for these doctors are muchsimpler thus minimizing the overallcost of Yankee doctors.
