THE letter from A. V. Kemp -Jones just goes to prove whata ridiculous attitude there is to records in this country.

All that is needed now, it seems, for a disc to get into theTop Twenty, is for the Beatles or the Rolling Stones torecommend it.

I'll admit their taste isvery good. But the thoughtthat hundreds of little modbirds will rush out and buya copy df "Hi Heel Sneakers"or "Urn Urn Urn Urn Urn"just becaues the Beatlesrave about it in an interviewprompts me to think whata great publicity asset itcould be to the interestedrecord company. Imagine oneof the Beatles being given aregular ten -second spot onTV just to tell everyone hisfavourite latest record. `I HAD ALL HOLLY TAPES'REVEALS BRIAN POOLE

AND now it can be told! Brian Poole and the Tremeloesare pleased with the progress of their new single,

"Someone"-mainly because it's so very different from theirearlier releases. An old Crickets' number, of course, writtenyears back by Norman Petty, manager of the late BuddyHolly.

Now for the bit that now canIn his early days, Brian

Poole was an unashamed fanof Buddy Holly and theCrickets. The boys' stage actwas filled with Holly mater-ial - and Brian, in thosedays, even sported vasthorn - rimmed spectacleswhich helped him even lookmore like American topsterBuddy.

He admitted this week:"We were mad about his ma-terial. So knocked out, infact, that we started writingto Norman Petty, and tomembers of the Crickets.Buddy had died, of course,and we were anxious to gethold of any songs, or discs,of his-in the hope we couldinclude them in our ownstage acts.

"And the Crickets andNorman were great. Theywrote us letters, telling us ofthe latest developments overthere. And they sent us tapesof sessions of the Crickets.Even tapes of the vocaltracks of Buddy singing.

"So this put us in a prettyprivileged position. It meantthat we were hearing newmaterial long before it wasthought of for release here.Of course, Buddy's popu-larity has held up fantastic-ally well in the years sincehis death-and we, well .

we've moved rather a longway from his type ofmaterial as a general rule."

Says Brian: "We certainlyleaned heavily on Buddy andthe Crickets in those days.But now I'm most anxious tostart writing my own songs.I've bought a tape -recorderand hope to carry it roundwith me in case there areany sudden flashes of inspir-ation.

CONFIDENCE"Fact is, I've felt a bit out

of things, what with all thoseother groups producing theirown numbers. I have writtena load of songs, but I sup-pose I've lacked confidencein them. Know what I mean?Other people have quite likedthem, I think, but I've beena bit bashful about pushingOwn, for vorordinr, nurposes.

"Now I'm working veryloosely with my recordingmanager, Mike Smith-andletting him hear most of thestuff I write. Incidentally,'Someone' was our first discfor a new company, StrandRecords - though it's re-leased as usual throughDecca. Mike's a great old

mate of ours, and he's cer-tainly had his fair share ofsuccess what with the earlyBilly Fury hits, and MikeBerry. Jet Harris and theApplejacks.

"'Someone' really is achange of style for us. Wehad to record it severaltimes before we were reallysatisfied that we'd got theright romantic atmosphere."

Incidentally, those o 1 dCricket -Holly -Petty tapes arehidden away among a massof cups, medals and trophiesin Brian's Barking, Essex,home. For Brian is one of

the best sportsmen ever togo into the big -beat business.He reached representativestatus at athletics, boxing,basketball, cricket, Rugby,swimming and soccer.

He says: "I still like a goodgame of basketball. Youknow, showbusiness is a lottougher than it seems. It'seasy to crack up if you don'tkeep yourself in goodtrim . . "

And though he doesn't playany instrument on stage, hehad piano lessons for fiveyears with a private tutorand is also pretty efficient on

guitar.What's more, he fronts one

of the most widely travelledgroups in Britain. They'vebeen to Eire, Sweden, Austra-lia, New Zealand, SouthAfrica, with America comingup. And in the Autumn theyrepresent British beat duringthe British week in Den-mark.

By the way, guess who isthe extra -special "Someone"in Brian's own life. He saysit's . . . his pet wire-hairedterrier, "Butch". No romanceat all. Which makes achange these days. . .

DIONNEWarwick, whose "Walk On By" jumped from 25 to 15 in the RM Top 50 last

week, is coming to Britain.She will arrive on Tuesday, May 21, on her first ever visit, for radio and television dates.

The first is "Ready Steady Go" on May 22; then she is on "Open House" (23rd); "ThankYour Lucky Stars" (24th); "Saturday' Club" (25th); "Scene at 6.30" (26th); and "Top of thePops" (27th).

Dionne's first LP, "Presenting Dionne Warwick", was issued by Pye on Tuesday. Thereare 14 tracks on the album, nearly all of them arranged by songwriter, MD, and composer,Burt Bacharach.

Little Richard is on Ready, Steady, Go, tomorrow night (Friday), and the followingday starts his national tour.

When Chuck Berry Ries in to London Airport on a jet clipper this week -end, the Animalswill be waiting on the tarmac to greet him.

For Chuck is the doyen of most British R & B groups, the Animals in particular as theywill be playing on the same bill during Chuck's 21 -day tour of the country.

The tour, Chuck's first of this country, starts at Finsbury Park Astoria (London) onSaturday, and continues until the end of the month.

Coinciding with the star's arrival, Pye are issuing their fifth Chuck Berry LP, titled"The Latest and the Greatest" next Tuesday. The numbers on the album are: Nadine,Fraulien, Guitar Boogie, Things I Used To Do, Don't You Lie To Me, Driftin' Blues, LiverpoolDrive, No Particular. Beatles TourNearly stoppedFEARS that Danish fans

might be deprived seeingthe Beatles in concert nextmonth have risen in Den-mark following reports thatthe police there had bannedthe two scheduled perfor-mances.

The Beatles are booked toplay the KB Hall, Copen-hagen, on Thursday, June 4,but after Danish 'police hadwatched a film of theBeatles' performances, anewspaper reported that"the misgivings already har-boured had only beenaugmented."

It continued: "The Chiefof Police considered thereaction of the young people`utterly hysterical'," and apolice superintendent hadsaid that he was "shocked"

and "more appalled than hehad imagined."

It is understood that thepolice were anxious aboutthe arrangements because itwas intended to run the twoperformances with only ashort interval between.

But at the last minute,almost, the Minister ofJustice of Denmark hasstepped in and reversed thepolice decision to ban theBeatles, remarking "that itis not for the police toconsider the quality ofconcerts."

However, there is a con-dition that the two concertsare held with a 90 minutes'interval so that the firstaudience can disperse beforethe second one arrives.

NEW BEATLES L.P.Dick James Move

MAJOR changes in the DickJames organisation (TheBeatles' and Gerry's music

publisher) this week.Having outgrown its premises

in Charing Cross Road, the com-pany, which comprises Dick JamesMusic, Northern Songs, JaepMusic, Pacermusic, and MetricMusic, moved, on Monday, to newoffices at 71-75 New Oxford Street,W.C.1.

And with effect from this week,Melcher Music, Doris Day's pub-lishing company, joins the list.

A number of personnel appoint-ments are also announced. RonnieBrohn from Kassner Music nowtakes over Copyright and Ac-counts; Lionel Conway, ex -LeedsMusic, takes over ExploitationManagement; and Leslie Conn,formerly with Melcher Music,joins Murray Apel in ArtistesPromotion.

THERE will be only six tracks on the new Beatles LPwhen it is released next month. The remainder of

the record will include incidental music from the group'sfilm, "A Hard Day's Night," and informal conversationbetween the Beatles and their A & R man, George Martin.

A title for the LP has not yet been decided by EMI, butthe film title itself is the most probable choice.

The album is expected to be released on June 25th-less than a fortnight before the premiere of their film atthe London Pavilion, Piccadilly Circus, London, on Mon-day, July 6th.

All the Beatles' previous records have been on theParlophone label, but it is strongly rumoured that thisnew LP will be on United Artists.

Heinz New Backing GroupHEINZ has a new backing

group. They are The WildOnes, who will appear with

the blond singer on all his tele-vision, radio, ballroom, and record-ing dates.

The Wild Ones comprise: Drum-mer Ian Broad, - formerly withFreddie Starr and the Mid-Nighters,and the Big Three; Bass guitaristand a newcomer, John Davies;Lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore(a founder member of Mike Berry'sone-time backing group, The Out-

laws); and organist Burr Bailey.Burr, who doubles on piano, was

the Dave side of the Joy and Davesinging duo. He then branchedout as a C & W singer, and hisfirst release, "San FranciscoBay" made the top fifty. Burr, realname Dave Adams, also has aC & W LP coming out on Deccain July under the name of SilasDooley, Jnr.

The wonderful Miss S. is in the throes of a tour which takes in Australia, New Zealand,Honolulu. America.She galloped verbally on.

"Take Australia. The gang ofus, Gerry and the Pace-makers and the others, havenever experienced f a ndemonstrations like it. Youreckoned the Beatles hadfantastic receptions inAmerica? Well, you waituntil they hit Australia.

"There were 6,000 fanswaiting at Sydney airport.And 8,000 at Adelaide. Theyclimbed fences, ran acrossfields, even got out on thetarmac. And they rockedthe bus they laid on for usso much that I thought itwas going to overturn. In-credible.

just great, too. Me-I lovedthe audiences. But trust meto get myself in a little bitof difficulty. At Melbourne,I stayed at the SouthernCross hotel. The Great Folk -Blues Concert"4-1 ENIUS - LADEN." That is theUr only adequate description of

"The American Folk, Blues andGospel Caravan" concert tour whichopened at Bristol last Wednesdaynight; and it is somehow tragic thatthe name artistes on the bill, eachof whom could have held that first -night audience for longer than theshow itself ran, had to make thebest of twenty or so minutes.

AWESOME Opening the show and getting

everybody into the mood was aformidable task made to lookchildishly simple by Sonny Terryand Brownie McGhee. The ever-green eloquence of this twenty -five -years -old partnership, which fea-tures Sonny's awesome harmonicaplaying and Brownie's rich voiceand guitar - picking, turned thecurtain - raiser into a roof - raiser- and a blissful memory. Alonethey did four numbers, and for theirfinale, a veritable storm entitled"Walk On", they were reinforced byOtis Spann (piano), Ransome Know -ling (bass) and Willie Smith(drums).

Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the FirstLady of Gospel Song, brought thefirst half to a frenzied close. Shefollowed two lesser - known spirit-uals with a quartet of favouriteswhich included "Travelin' Shoes"and her encore, an all - too - shortversion of "The Saints".

MASTERYThe second half produced a real

surprise in the person of CousinJoe Pleasants. Virtually unknownover here, this dapper man fromNew Orleans displayed a fine pianomastery, a remarkably powerfulvoice, and a self - composed song-book full of delicious humour whichbrought gales of laughter and ap-

plause from the audience. CousinJoe held the stage for four hilariousnumbers, then he was joined byMessrs. Terry Knowlings and Smithfor "Hard Headed Woman" (yes-Presley's) and his encores.

Blind Gary Davis may rely onsomeone to lead him to the micro-phone, but once there he and hishuge guitar are in sole commandof the proceedings. A man withamazingly swift fingers and a clear,true voice, he won instant respectand even reverence from theaudience. "Rev.", as he is affec-tionately known, included two of hismost famous songs, "Samson andDelilah", and "Bad Company" forwhich he called Sonny Terry backon stage. The end of his spot un-leashed a thunderclap of acclama-tion..

SILKENFinally, it was the turn of Muddy

Waters. BY the clock, Muddyhad just TEN MINUTES to showwhy he had been chosen to closethis fantastic show. His wonderfulvoice and silken guitar chordslooked like doing just that when,after only three numbers (whichincluded "Tiger In Your Tank"),the theatre lights went up and hewas called off. To the delight ofeveryone, however, he ignored therequest, and did one more shortsong (they even dimmed the lightsagain halfway through) but it was adisappointing end to the first showof the most consistently brilliantpackage show we are ever likelyto see.

A REWARD of £100 has beenA offered by Sound City, ofShaftesbury Avenue, London, forinformation leading to the recoveryof the £500 Gretch "White Falcon"guitar stolen in the early hours oflast Friday morning.

Shortly after 6 a.m., a house -brick was thrown through a plate -glass window in the shop, scatter-ing glass and debris over displayedstock. Then, hands reached throughthe window, and grabbed the WhiteFalcon, believed to be the onlyguitar of its kind in this country.

The guitar had been on show inthe window since Sound City wasopened in March.

IKE & TINA TURNER-r-s-A N innovation in the blues field that seldom appears else-

where are male and female duos. In this week's "GreatUnknowns" perhaps the most popular of these duos is spot-lighted - namely Ike And Tina Turner.Known throughout the business as the wildest couple in

the musical world, Ike and Tina Turner have cleaned up theU.S. charts with such numbers as "A Fool In Love", "It'sGonna Work Out Fine" and "Poor Fool".

Ike, was born twenty sixyears ago in Clarksdale,Mississippi, a small townrunning adjacent to theMississippi river, just east ofArkansas. Since the age ofeleven he has been interestedin blues music, and in histeens he formed his ownband in which he playedpiano and guitar. It waswhile he was working withthe band that he first metTina who approached theband with a view to sing-ing with them. Ike asked herwhether she had ever sungprofessionally before.

VOCALISTShe replied that she

hadn't and continued topursue Ike in the hope ofbecoming the group's voca-list. After a while, they fellin love and married, but stillno hope of Tina's becominga vocalist occurred.

Then the group got theirbig chance, namely to record'for Sue records, one of thebiggest R & B companies inthe States. And the songwhich they were to recordwas called "A Fool In Love",backed with "The Way YouLove Me".

But at the session, theproposed singer failed toshow for the date, so indesperation they decided togive Tina her first try andthe chance she had beenwaiting for.

The result was fantastic.The disc was a smasherooand leapt into the U.S.charts - mostly as the re-sult of Tina's wild andfrantic vocal. The disc wasissued here on the Londonlabel, but failed to make thecharts, or any impression onthe British record buyingpublic. They brought outseveral discs in the Stateswhich weren't issued here,all of them with Sue, butthen they had another topten Hit with "It's GonnaWork Out Fine", consideredto be one of the world'swildest vocal discs, in whichIke and Tina 'talk' on disc.

They followed it up witha string of smashes like"Poor Fool" and "Tra-La-La-La", but these weren't is-'

sued here. Now that Suehave their own label herethey have issued an EP con-taining several of their hitsincluding "A Fool In Love","Fm Jealous", "If", and"Gonna Find Me A Substi-tute". And there are plansto issue an LP of the team-in fact they have abouthalf a dozen LP's issued inthe States.

Two weeks ago though,Ike and Tina broke off theirassociation with Sue recordsand signed a contract withWarner Brothers. The firstdisc has just been rushedout titled "A Fool For AFool" / "No Tears To Cry".This will be issued heftshortly.

But for the wildest pairin the business, the odds arethat they'll probably nevercatch on with the Britishrecord buyers, to the ex-tent they have in the States.

THE WILD WILD ANIMALSTHOSE chart -rising Animals sat casually around a table

and explained the reasons for them breaking -up theiroriginal "menagerie"-their original base when they firstleft Newcastle-upon-Tyne for the bright lights of London.

Explained organist Alan Price first: "We all moved intoa flat in Kensington. All very nice, very plush. But spending24 hours a day with each other led to trouble. We got fed up.We started arguing over almost any little thing-like who'dhad more eggs than he was entitled to.

"And there was ChasChandler, our bass guitarist.He was a villain - he'd goround singing at the top ofhis voice . . . EARLY INTHE MORNING!"

Broke in Chas: "That'sbecause I'm always cheerfuland you were always havinghangovers."

Alan: "Then there werejokes. Like when JohnnySteel was ill and they fedhim All -bran . . . and madehim worse. And the businessof leaving a milk bottle fullof icy water at the door sothat when anybody went outthey got boot -fulls of slush.

COMPLAINTS"And the bucket of water

balanced on a bedroomdoor, ready to drench some-body. Collapsing beds. Aniron bar delicately balancedto fall hard on somebody'stoes. And the neighbour whocalled to complain aboutdoors being banged-to findan Animal in underpantsprotesting innocence.

"Or our friend from New-castle who came to stay andwas mistaken for a burglarwhen he was locked out.There appeared to be atheory that we were lower-ing the tone of the.area . . . "

So now the Animals liveseparately in bed - sitters.And they like it. True, Chasand Alan DID share oneroom for a time . . . butthere were disputes withtheir neighbour, a classicalviolinist, over musical tastes.

MORE SAXNow Chas, Alan, John,

Hilton Valentine (leadguitar) and singer Eric .Bur -don are caught up fully inthe stardom bit. But theyadmit to being sad about theway pop music has becomestereotyped. They say:"We'd like to see tenor saxused more. In fact, we've gota friend in Newcastle whocould join us. But it's not upto us-you've got to blamethe dee-jays who don't playoriginal stuff."

But perhaps the biggestchance for the Animalscomes when they tour with. . . JAMES BOND, no less.That happens this way.

Starting on May 29, theyfilm a half-hour moviecalled "Swinging U.K." It'sin colour and they'll play aminimum of three numbers.And this film is scheduledto go out with the new Bondfilm "Goldfinger"-so they'llbe assured of packed housesall the way.

Their tour with ChuckBerry knocks them out, too.It starts this week -end andthey say: "We've admiredthis man for years. To beactually working with himis fantastic. One thing is forsure - we'll be out in theaudience every single timehe walks on stage. There'sso much to learn from a starof his calibre."

And for June there willbe the first Animals' L.P.Their discs are directed byMickey Most, himself anestablished song - star. Infact, they had the ratherunique experience of havingstarted their L.P. before therelease of the debut single,"Baby Let Me Take YouHome."

STAGE SUITSNow I'd like to clarify the

question of that wierd groupname. They explain: "Whenwe first started, back home,we were the Alan PriceCombo. We had no moneyso we couldn't buy stagesuits, or even have our haircut. We looked somewhatwild and unruly.

'Anyway, as our reputa-tion started to grow, peoplegot on to us about ourappearance. Said we lookedmore like 'animals'. Thatcaught on, too - peopleshouted after us as wewalked through the streets.So we thought: let's playalong with this and actuallycall ourselves Animals. Itlooked a good thing forpublicity, too . . . "

Now the Animals, cagedin their separate bed-sitters,look set for a continuedsuccess story. Life is hectic,they agree. But then it'sreally all happened for themin just a few short months.The only thing that palls is

having to be interviewed bypeople who don't know whatR and B really IS.

"It's like sending garden-ing expert Percy Thrower totalk to us", said Chas.

"I dunno," said Alan."After all, our music ispretty earthy. And earth issomething Mr. Throwerwould surely like . . "

THE ANIMALS are shoot-ing up the charts with theirpounding, exciting version of"Baby Let Me Take YouHome." The boys themselvesall hail from Newcastle andare acknowledged as one ofthe leading R & B styledgroups in the country.

a few minutes before starting on their first LP theMerseybeats discovered they were at least one number

short. (You might think they would have been worrying forweeks, at least, over finding the material for an album -but if you think that you don't know these four easy-goingcharacters very well!).But they didn't panic. They set to work forthwith and by

the time the tapes were ready to roll they had composed anew tune, "Jumpin' Jonah." To this they added "Funny Face"and another original, "Milkman" (in which the Milk Market-ing Board are already taking a keen interest; looks as thoughthe Merseybeats will soon be used to plug milk. They drinkit too - I've seen 'em at it).

Why didn't they just in-clude their most successfulnumbers from their stageappearances? Leader TonyCrane explained: "We'velearned from experience thatsongs that go down greatwith audiences, gets every-one screaming, aren't anygood on record. It works theother way round, too. Forthe album we've recorded afew oldies such as "My HeartAnd I", "Hello YoungLovers", and "The Girl ThatI Marry." Not the kind ofthing that we'd featuremuch on stage."

FINISHEDThey finished the record-

ings several days ago and tocelebrate Fontana's recording chief Jack Baverstocktook the boys out on thetown, including a visit tothe London Palladium tocatch Lena Horne. Needlessto say, it's their ambitionto perform on that illustriousstage, but not necessarily

just yet. Tony says they arein no hurry: "It's not thatI don't think we're goodenough or anything; I'm notconvinced we are wellenough known yet."

Still and all, they aren'tdoing too badly for a groupthat has only been recordingfor one year this month(May). Their first, "It's LoveThat Really Counts", releasedlast August, got them to No.22. Their second, "I Think OfYou" made the Number 4spot and is still selling verywell (it was released in earlyDecember).

As for "Don't TurnAround" - well, the bestcomment was devised byJack Baverstock. After theircelebration dinner, a massivecake was plonked in frontof them. The surprised four -

After their wild night outthe lads were looking a littledilapidated (marvellous whatwonders of retouching thesephotographers can work!)and they had rolled out ofbed at least an hour late forthe appointment. Butcamera - clicking Don Jarviswas determined to get thesession over as soon aspossible ("So's we can all goout and get a drink") andFontana records wereparticularly anxious toget some good pictures be-cause they had already madeand discarded, one fullcover picture of The Mer-

seybeats in action on a`Thank Your Lucky Stars'TV set.

Don jovially bullied theminto brightening up theireyes and combing theirhairy mops. Under thehot lights Tony Crane,Johnny Gustafson, AaronWilliams and John Banks be-gan to look their "glamor-ous" on-stage selves.Mr. Jarvis announced "OK,that was just a warm-up.Let's have a go now!"

So I went, reflecting thatalmost as much work has togo into an album's cover asinto its contents. We'll beable to see and hear the re-sults in a few weeks' time.

The Story ofFlingel BuntPETER JONES DISCOVERS ALL ABOUT IT

WHO'D have thought that a character with a name like FLINGEL BUNT would evershow through in the charts? But that's what is happening, via The Shadows' out-

standing "Rise and Fall of F.G." And Messrs. Hank, Bruce, Brian and John are delighted:that so many people are interested in this weird -named character.

So let's reveal the startling truth 'about Mr. Bunt. Let's lay bare some of his secrets.The Shads met Flingel in

Las Palmas in the CanaryIslands during the filming of"Wonderful Life." They aver:"He used to come from hiscave, scaled feet a -glistening,lathe -like in structure, gauntof appearance . . . A N DWAVE HIS HANDS.

"And down would comethe rain. It worked almostevery time. Every time wewanted to do some exteriorshots in the required blazingsunshine."

SOCIETYNow the Shads have

formed a Society for thePropagation of The TruthAbout Flingel Bunt. Theyresent the inaccuraciesgoing the pop -world roundsabout their favourite charac-ter.

"Following the flop of hisrecording of 'Crad ThatCroddle Now Baby', he hada vicious attack of sock -bit-ing which culminated inbouts of wrist -whistling,forcing him into retirementin Bogginshire, where he isnow a successful redundantand gent.

"The film rights of his

story have already been soldto a major company for anastronomical figure a n dshooting will either start orbreak out any day now. Itwill be an epic productionwith a cast of dozens. Thetitle - 'Flingel and Cleo-patra'."

THEORYThat's what the Shadows

say. But they've left bits out,according to their vocalist,Cliff Richard. There's noreference to the theory thatFlingel Bunt was the mastermind behind the mail trainrobbery and the sabotage ofthe opening night of BBC 2.

'Wonderful Life') had caughta glimpse of Flingel, slip-ping furtively out of theSavage Club recently."

I checked with RichardO'Sullivan who said: "Well,it was certainly no one elsethat I knew-and if it wasno one else, then who elsecould it have been but him?"

partially hidden in mists ofrumour and counter -rumour.

Is he back there in LasPalmas-waiting for another

You can't get definite in-formation from the Shadows.They seem evasive. But thenthe truth is they are nowrather fond of Flingel Bunt.

And why not, when theirrecorded tribute to his lifeand times is selling in suchhuge quantities.

Mystery of the CrystalsIliA MONTH or so ago, those

four gorgeous lasses withthat bluesy Phil Spectorsound arrived back in theStates. The Crystals had justcompleted a very successfultour of Britain, with Man-fred Mann, Johnny Kidd,Heinz, Joe Brown and a hostof other big name stars.

But the disc which theywere plugging, an item called'I Wonder' just didn'tmanage to make the lists inBritain. Despite the fact thatit was as good as their pastdiscs, and had a U.S. "A"side "Little Boy" on theflip. Of course the Crystalshad a string of hits beforewith numbers like "Da DooRon Ron," "He's A Rebel"and their fabulous "Then HeKissed Me." Also theiralbum entitled "He's ARebel" managed to do quitewell too.

IMITATORSThe main reason

that "I Wonder" didn't doso well was probably the vastnumber of imitators of PhilSpector's type of music.Groups like the Breakaways,the Orchids and many manymore, all jumped on theSpector sound bandwagon totry to get the Crystals/Ronettes sound.

But the Crystals were un-perturbed themselves attheir lack of success withthe disc. They were merelylooking forward to. the re-cording session which calledthem back to the States,where Phil had a new ideaabout recording them.

Originally it was plannedthat the Crystals would enjoy

a few days in London aftercompleting their strenuousBritish concert tour. A bigfan club gathering at theFlamingo had been fixed forwhat was to have been theeve of their return to theStates, and the girls weregreatly looking forward toshopping for souvenirs whenthe stores opened afterEaster; not to mentioncatching up on some much -needed sleep.

This, however, was not tobe. The day after the tourended a call from their NewYork headquarters told thegirls that they were neededin the recording studio andrequested that they shouldtake the first available flighthome. That is how La Laand Dee Dee came to leaveus two days earlier thanwas expected - on EasterMonday - followed justtwenty-four hours later by

Fran, Barbara, and roadmanager Arthur Pemberton.

Back in the States, Franand Barbara summed uptheir visit.

"We sure enjoyed thetrip" said Fran. "Thepeople were very friendly,and it was great meetingour fans. The weather couldhave been a lot kinder tous, though."

"Yes," agreed Barbara,"we would have enjoyedour stay much more if ithadn't rained so much-andif we'd had more time tolook around. Six weeks ontour without a single dayoff is so exhausting, itseemed as though all weever did was work, sleepand travel. Just one day offhere and there would haveallowed us to recuperateand take in some of thesights."

BOBBY'S FIT AGAINCONSIDERING that he has not

yet a hit record, Bobby Shaftohas had his share of nationalheadlines. But, unfortunately, starktragedy has been behind many ofthem - which is why I welcomehim back to the disc -folk withgreat enthusiasm.

Remember Bobby? Blue-eyed,fair-haired, a bundle of talentvocally - and the sort of good -looker who could make it in films.Ex-teaboy in Lionel Bart's publish-ing company, then debut disc -maker with a Bart song "OverAnd Over."

And over to . . June, 1963.Bobby, touring in Germany, wasinvolved in a car smash - ahigh-speed, grinding, crushing crash.His friend Freddie Clifford, thedriver, was killed outright. Bobbywas on the critical list in hospital,with daily bulletins headlined onhis slow recovery.

It took eight months convales-cence. His natural keenness to getback to work was further ham-pered by an appendix operation.I saw Bobby many times duringthis period as he fretted his wayto complete recovery.

met Craig Douglas's manager,Robin Britten. Together they talkedabout a disc comeback for Bobby.A long, slow process, this. Bobbyhad a course of singing lessonswith Mabel Corran, who had taughtMark Wynter, Craig - and Dickie

Valentine. Bobby and Robin tooktheir time finding the right sort ofnumber to record . and slowlyagain, Bobby started making per-sonal appearances.

Now the disc is out. Voted a hitby "Juke Box Jury," presentedwith talent on "Thank Your LuckyStars," "plugged" all over thecountry on other television pro-grammes. It's the driving, up -tempo"She's My Girl" . . . on theParlophone label.

Says Robin Britten: "I thin kBobby is a natural. His voice hasimproved enormously and we're get-ting tremendous reaction from thefans wherever he appears. We'rejust hoping his run of bad luckis finally over - and that he canget on with building the sort ofstar career he deserves."

Says Bobby: "I nearly went madwith frustration during all that timeout of the business. But I'm grate-ful for the way people have helpedme . , . put faith in me."

Say I: I've boosted Bobby'stalents in the past. He has thepersonality to make it big - andthe voice. Plus the fact that hehappens to be a darned nice,amiable young man.

Aussie Bryan triesfor Britain!

WE'VE checked. Double-checked.And there's no doubt that Bryan

Davies was the youngest -ever whenhe started his own television series("The Bryan Davies Show") inAustralia. He was just 17 . . . andthe show ran on, every Saturday,for more than two years.

Now Bryan is in Britain. He's 19now, and making his British discdebut with "Raincoat In The River"on Columbia - it's a welcomerevival of the old Sammy Turnerhit. Written by Aaron Schroederand Chuck Kaye . . . Aaron wrote17 of Elvis Presley's biggies.

Says Bryan: "I left Australia be-cause I honestly felt I'd done all Icould there, I wanted some sort ofchallenge. Funny thing, the change,Fans chased me round Australia forautographs and so on - but inBritain, nobody knows me. It's likestarting all over again."

While Norrie Paramor was ac-companying Cliff Richard "downunder," he met Byan, and sug-gested he should try his luck inLondon some time. Bryan hadbeen complete "guv'nor" on histelevision series, featuring stars like

John Leyton, Adam Faith, Johnnie,Ray.

"I was bullied into going for aTV audition - and to my surprisepassed it," says Bryan. "It was aproblem deciding whether to go intoshow business full-time, or carry onstudying. In the end, I did both."

Two hit discs "down under,""D r e am Girl" and "Five FootTwo," came up fast. Plus a fineLP "On My Way."

Says Bryan: "Now the televisionshows are coming along in Britain,to help the record. It's a changenot having my old gang aroundme, but it seems quite likely that,I'll be going back to Australiaanyway for a new series of myown show. I'd really like to spliteach year between Britain andAustralia."

It takes courage to chuck upsteady stardom to try from thestart elsewhere. Especially at theage of 19. But there are success -story precedents in the namesFrank Ifield and Patsy Ann Noble.Now Bryan is making headway.His "Raincoat In The River" isgetting fair dinkum reviews.

diving into the Thames-fullyclothed. Splash! That was new

Decca artiste Tony Colton doingditto . . . and doing it, what ismore, for MONEY. ;or both werestunt men in movies before turn-ing to records. And if they did atouch of the high -diving, theyearned more loot.

Tony's first disc out is "LoseMy Mind"-and it highlights wellhis R and B feel which is earn-ing him plenty of work round theLondon clubs nowadays.

Says Tony: "I was born inTonbridge Wells. For a time I waswhat they call a progress chaserat Fords, in Dagenham. But Isang around in my spare time.Then, suddenly, it all started. Imade demo -discs for some pub-lishers . . . and then startedwriting."

How he started writing! He'salready had over fifty songs pub-lished. And the American labelRoulette signed him up for a year."Only one disc was released",says Tony. "I know it wasn't ahit, but at least it gave me abreak in the States before I'drecorded anything in this country."

Now Tony works with his owngroup . . . and very successfully.He's a fast -talker who knows aheck of a lot about the discbusiness. What's more his owndebut disc, self -penned by theway, is starting to move.

Looks like Tony Colton can for-get about diving in the Thamesand all those other stunts.

SAME FLAT"Then I moved into the same

flat as Manfred and Mike Hugg andwe snowballed into a very slowlymoving snowball. We _got interestedin playing R & B, which meantthat one of us had to play guitar(wed tried out a motley assort-ment of guitarists without success)and I borrowed an instrument andstarted to learn it. I'm stilllearning!"

Now that they've made the BigTime. Mike is looking forwardto finding time (the one commoditythey are shortest of) to buy acar. "I've had a number of oldcars. most of them have beenabandoned in the English country-side, and soon I intend to get areally good one."

Manfred is the most talkative ofthe group ("I'll never get a wordin when he's around." said Mikewryly), much "admired" by hiscolleagues for his ability to winevery' argument (to his own satis-faction, at least). He's quick -thinking and articulate and hisbackground is an unusual one fora pop star:-

of 14, was sent to teachers and myinterest rapidly flagged. I threwup lessons again and again. But,listening to the radio I gotinterested in trad jazz and pops byBing and others.

"there was a bunch of fellas Iwas very anxious to get in withand I heard one of them mentionHarry James-they were all jazzfans. So I bought my first LP,Harry .tames' A,I Time Favouriies,in the hope of impressing them. I

took it along to them, theycrowded round the gramophone-and then started wandering off intothe next room. It seemed I'dbought the wrong record. Afterthat, I started taking an interestin Brubeck. Shearing and TedHeath, and started playing pianoat private parties.

"Suddenly, playing became logicalto me and I became fascinatedwith the reasons behind music-why certain chords sound good andlead on to the other chords andso on.

"An American jazz pianist andteacher, John Mehegan, came toSouth Africa and I took lessonsfrom him. Practising became dailyroutine with me. I began going tolibraries and looking up books onMUSIC.

"After Mehegan went home I

started studying theory with theProfessor of Music at Johannes-

burg University. But South Africawas turning into a Republic andI felt 1 wattled to gel out. Sodid my professor, a Viennese.

"So. at the age of 2o I cameto London and got a grubby flatin Hampstead. I wrote a fewarticles on jazz musical theoryfor Jazz News and advertisedmyself as a jazz harmony teacher.I got quite a few pupils."

(Interruption from Mike Vickers:"They came to him because theywanted to know what his articlesmeant!'')

"But they soon drifted away. Myplace didn't have the right aura-no secretary and all that-and 1

think they resented. being made toclap with records. I always starteda new pupil by making him clapwith a record. If he clapped onthe on beat (as they always do atthe end of luke Box Jury) I'dmake him carry' on clapping untilhe understood the rhythm andclapped on the utt beat. But mostof them resented paying I5s. 6d.

to learn how to clap.-So I joined the pathetic army

of jazz musicians trying to makea living playing in pubs and clubsto listeners who were indifferentor knew ii already and just talkedthrough the music.

"I got a job at Butlins with MikeHugg on vibes. We were veryambitious to make the jazz sceneand we assembled a good band,a seven piece with tenor andtrumpet. Occasionally we evenhad a bloke on piccolo.

"The tenor and trumpet leftand we thought it was a catas-trophe. We got a vocalist-Paul

- and I thought he was acatastrophe. I opposed him joiningus but there was nobody else. MikeHugg and I pooled 'all our resourcesand bought an organ for 1325. Atlast we were getting our presentsound. But nobody wanted to know.

"We were booked for theopening of a club in Poole andwere paid C25. which knocked usout. We didn't knock out the

audience. though. Ten peopleturned up and threatened to breakthe place up if We appeared again.The club packed in. and cancelledthe following week's attraction-agroup of unknowns called TheRolling Stones.

"Suddenly. it all started clickinginto place. Before our hit with5-4-3-2-1 we were working regularly.turning away bookings.

"Now. everything's a rush. Wedon't have enough time to rehearse.and to think about the things youmust think about if you are tostay' successful in this business. Wedon't even hove time to listen toall the r & b records which MikeVickers and I enjoy just as much-though in a different way-as weenjoy our first love, jazz::
