Exploring Early Childhood Exploring Early Childhood students have been studying food and nutrition for
young children. As part of their assessment task they planned a birthday party
for a young child and created a nutritious party food dish. Each student
researched and justified their food choice by analysing and comparing the
recipe to the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating for Children. The results
were wonderful, well done.

Year 9 Food Technology Last Thursday, our Year 9
Food Technology students
completed their first practical
assessment task. This
‘Masterchef’ style pressure
test involved each student
individually preparing and
presenting a pasta dish. Specific skills and techniques demonstrated by the
students included precision cuts, al dente pasta and a basic roux. Everyone
completed the dish to an excellent standard, congratulations!
Miss Gray
Congratulations Tahj Tahj Hodder, Yr 7, has been successful in gaining a place in the 2018 NSW
Public Schools Aboriginal Dance Company. Tahj and three other students
attended a workshop in term one in Lismore run by the esteemed Bangarra
Dance Company tutors. These workshops were held across NSW and both
Tahj and Chloe Gillett were short listed. Video footage was taken of the
students and this was used to conduct further selections with a panel back in

Richmond Valley Try a Trade Week Richmond Valley Council hosted ten young ladies to
spend a week working in the operational sections.
The purpose was for females to experience what it
would be like to work outdoors in horticulture,
engineering, survey and design, civil construction and
water and sewer construction. Two of our students,
Rachael Redman and Logan Bradford were
successful in their application to participate in this
program.
Comments from the participants confirm the program was a great success:
What did you like best about your time here with us?
“Getting involved with everyone, doing outside activities”
“Working and learning everything, and Mikey was so welcoming and loving”
“The work, the other workers being so kind, letting me in the com, very
welcoming and how the council is run”
“Working with workers that helped with answering questions and the support
that they provided. Also helped within the workshop with what I was unsure
about”
‘The people were very nice, explained things and made it a fun and safe time”
“Everyone was really friendly”
“The welcoming staff and their willingness to help and educate us. Also the
eye opening to the diversity with the council and engineering section and the
mix of outdoor/indoor work”
“The range of opportunities that council offered
us. Both in the field and indoors. We got to get
hands on and all the staff were supportive and
encouraging”
What did you like least about your time here?
“The concreting”
“Not working longer, like more hours of working.
The program should be longer – at least 2 weeks”
“The cold start but everything else was good”
“That it has to end”
Would you recommend our work experience
program to others? Why?
“it gets girls out in boy related jobs and it is good
to try new things”
“everyone is so lovely and I loved working here,
and I learnt a lot”
“Yes, because it was an amazing experience to
have. Good to learn about different trades, jobs
and so much more.
Thank you everyone in RVC for this program and
being selected to participate in this. I enjoyed it
very much. It has encouraged myself to think
about a school based traineeship at the council”
“to help them with their future careers”
“because it is a good chance to see what it is
really like working outside and to see what
working in a males role is like too”
“it is very eye opening, with much variety between
outside/inside, fun, paperwork.
“great opportunity to learn about what council
offers and to get experience in different trades.
Everyone is supportive and encouraging”
Team RVC did a great job to ensure the
participants got value from the experience.
Lawn Bowls Oscar Forrester, Donovan Moss and Eric Redman
travelled to Casino on Wednesday May 16. They
played Bonalbo Central school and defeated them
19-12. Thanks to Kevin (Oscar's grandfather) for
umpiring the game. Well done boys.

Helping Your Child Find Their Career
The year 10 to 11/12 subject selection night is being held early next term. It
is important that students make an informed choice that suits their needs
and abilities.
Over the coming weeks I will be highlighting a number of useful parts of our
careers website that could help with senior subject selection.
Research has shown that young people value parents/carers who show a
genuine interest and understanding about their career pathways.
From the drop menu “For Parents” select “Useful Links” and select “Helping
Your Child Find Their Career” or by clicking here. This New Zealand website
has some excellent information and advice on helping your child with career
choices and decision making.

Author Tristan Bancks Visit Byron Writers Festival’s,
StoryBoard Bus and author
Tristan Bancks visited Year 8
on Wednesday. StoryBoard
is a travelling creative writing
workshop that stimulates the
critical life skill of active and
functional literacy through
writing and publishing.
Bringing leading authors and
illustrators into schools,
StoryBoard helps to inspire
young people in the Northern Rivers to create
stories, and foster creativity and literacy.
Tristan Bancks is a children's and teen author with
a background in acting and filmmaking. His books
include Two Wolves (recognised as an Honour
Book in the 2015 Children's Book Council of
Australia Book of the Year Awards, as well as
winner of the YABBA and KOALA Children's
Choice Awards), the My Life series (weird-funny-
gross short stories featuring Tom Weekly) and
Mac Slater, Coolhunter. These books are popular
choices in our library for our students.
What the students thought of the day…
Eric: It was a great experience
Jake: I liked the funny sentences about his life
Amber: I enjoyed the 5 minute writing
Pascallie: I liked everything about the experience
Justice: he is very inspirational, he helped me
realise I’m not so bad at writing after all.
Yr 7-12 Athletics Carnival A reminder to high school students that the Yr 7-12 Athletics Carnival is on
next Tuesday. Please come dressed in your house colours. Year 12 students
will be cooking a BBQ during the day and Café Sharkies will also be
operating.
Year 7 Project Based Learning Students in PBL (Project Based Learning) impressed the Red Queen this
week with an outstanding display of top-notch food and cooking skills. The
final cook that was on display would satisfy Heston himself and "Foodies"
alike. In PBL, students had unlimited access to the now 2 years young
Hospitality room for the past ten weeks. The room’s facilities provide an
outstanding opportunity to hone their cooking skills and refine the finer details
required to host a high tea. Over this time, students learned to prepare,
organise and coordinate great meals in teams of 3. The beginning stages
presented some challenges that included baking skills and finding where the
blenders are stored! Students adapted accordingly and quickly, and
developed finesse in their cooking to produce well-balanced, plated food. The
final product of plated food was sensational and created with a high level of
creativity and quality. The menu would satisfy a child’s dream with menu
items such as choc-coated skittles, cookies & cream thick shakes and scones
baked from scratch with hand-whipped cream. It left invited guests satisfied
with full bellies. Guests also commended the students for their efforts and the
quality of food presented. Well done!
