Welcome to your winter edition.

We’ve had a fantastic start to the year with so many trailblazing projects on the go.

This issue is filled with information, stories and opportunities to keep you interested, active and entertained all through winter.

For many, the winter season evokes thoughts of cosy evenings with a warm drink and a good movie. For the footy fans among us, winter can be summed up simply as “footy season”. Whether you are a footy fan, or not, flip over to page 5, for an inspiring story about winter footy in Fawkner.

You will read that footy is now more inclusive than ever for all cultures and for women and girls. We introduce you to a young talented footy player and a role model for girls in sport. Raising the level of equality in clubs is good for sport and for the whole community.

In other news about important changes – go to page 4 to read about a new service added to your roadside collections. From Monday 1 July all food waste can be put into your Green Waste bin for collection. For a more sustainable city, this service could reduce landfill by 40% and the recycled food waste will be turned into compost and distributed to Victorian farmers.

Jump online or phone 9240 1111 for more information on how to recycle your e-waste and what items are classified as e-waste. We encourage everyone to assist us to recover, reuse and recycle your e-waste – to reduce landfill for an improved local environment and a healthier planet.

As well as supporting the environment, we have many services to support and enliven our community. Our libraries and leisure centres are community hubs with multiple options for recreation and relaxation – to stretch our minds and keep us active – for better physical and mental health.

I invite you to explore what’s on offer by heading to our website and social media pages.

Happy reading! Wishing you a wonderful winter season.

Climate change is a dangerous threat to earth’s people, plants and animals. As individuals, community groups, schools, businesses and not-for-profit organisations, we can all plan and act to reduce carbon emissions and join the campaign to demand action for a safe climate.

Council’s adopted goal for Moreland is to be a ‘zero carbon’ community by 2040. The draft Zero Carbon Moreland Action Plan 2020/21 – 2024/25 proposes measurable targets and key programs to influence and reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions in three areas:

• Energy Transition: Efficient and 100% Renewably Powered Energy

• Sustainable Transport: Active or Zero Emissions Transport

• Waste and Consumption: Circular Economy with Zero Waste

Council is undertaking extended community and stakeholder consultation before finalising the 5-year Action Plan. You can access the draft plan and make an online submission at moreland.vic.gov.au/draft-zero-carbon until Friday 27 September 2019.

Moreland residents can now dispose of food scraps, including cooked food, through their green waste bin (with the light green lid, now called the organics bin), meaning less waste going to landfill and less greenhouse gas emissions.

Council’s enhanced Food and Garden Organics fortnightly kerbside collection means anyone who already has a green waste bin can start putting food scraps and garden waste into it to be composted – turning it into soil conditioner for community gardens, wineries and agriculture.

“Seeing food and garden waste as the valuable resource that it is, can reduce our landfill quantities by almost half,” says Moreland Councillor Jess Dorney.

“I’m so excited we’re making simple changes to fight climate change – and that everyone can play a part,” Councillor Dorney adds.

Residents using Council’s waste service can order an organics bin by calling Council on 9240 1111 or find out more at moreland.vic.gov.au/organics. Alternatively, if you need a larger green waste bin you can upsize your current bin at no additional charge.

Strength and skills: women in sport In 2009 – ten years ago – Council noticed that women and girls seriously weren’t getting a fair go when it came to accessing sport in Moreland. Fast-forward to 2019 and Moreland is proudly leading the way.

Thanks to our trailblazing Active Women and Girls Strategy and the Allocation of Sporting Grounds and Pavilions Policy, Moreland is proud to be the first council in Victoria to have all clubs who receive a winter/annual allocation to council facilities have girls and women on their committees and all field female teams.

How did this happen, when only 8% of clubs back in 2009 had women and girls involved? Through policy, local Moreland clubs who have women’s and girls’ sporting teams – alongside boys’ and men’s teams – will receive priority access to our sports grounds and pavilions.

Council has also made sure that committees and leaders in the sporting community are given face-to-face support – along with guidance on how to be inclusive.

Research recently completed by VicHealth’s This Girl Can VIC campaign – a campaign to get women and girls of all ages and backgrounds active and involved in sport – shows that a big reason women and girls are not trying new activities or getting involved in sport is a fear of being judged, or not being fit enough to start.

Also, twice as many women than men put off getting active because they’re worried about what other people think – something Council wants to work alongside the community to help change.

Council has dedicated resources to work with local clubs to champion female sport in Moreland. This includes maintaining relationships with state and local sports associations to build competitions to meet the growing demands and sitting with club committee members to work towards female-friendly environments and cultures.

Fourteen-year-old Tamanah Rahim only recently started playing for Fawkner’s Northern Saints Football Club, thanks to an introduction to the club by being part of the Count Me In Too Project, a partnership project between Merri Health and Council. “I only started playing football a few months ago. I wasn’t really into it. Now I love it,” she smiles.

Tamanah is a rising star in the Moreland community, with her new love of football making her want to get more girls to keep active and healthy.

“I try to get more girls to play sport. Even if they don’t like football I try to help them find a sport they like – that suits their expectations,” Tamanah says. “Not enough girls play sport, and because of this a lot of girls aren’t active,” she adds.

Tamanah also recently won the Centre for Melbourne Youth Award for Leadership. At the awards ceremony she spoke about her love of football.

“My favourite thing about footy is the amount of skill work we do: the strength building, the speed work,” Tamanah says.

Being the winner of AFL Victoria’s Most Inclusive Club, Moreland’s very own Coburg Districts Football Club is also

celebrating women and girls in sport, with this year being the first year they’ve had a senior women’s football team. Club President Allan Chandler says the whole club was stoked about the news.

“Our football club is very proud and honoured to be selected as the winner of this award from AFL Vic,” Allan says. Nearly all the women in the Coburg Districts’ senior team had never played football before - some had even never played a team sport before.”

Coburg Districts FC has built a space where everyone belongs, regardless of their experience, fitness or confidence level.

Councillor Helen Davidson says she is proud that Council is seriously investing in women’s and girls’ sport across Moreland: “With more female-friendly change rooms, women on sporting committees and our push to have all clubs across the area to have female teams, more girls and women are enjoying the health and social aspects of staying active and fit.”

Northern Saints Coach Kevin Kazazes, star player Tamanah Rahim and President Joseph Antonetti.

AROUND YOUR WARD IN WINTER

The McDonald Reserve public toilet refurbishment should be completed by July. The $150,000 project will renew the Coburg park’s toilets and provide new accessible facilities for players, spectators and the community from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

The refurbishment of the synthetic soccer pitch at CB Smith Reserve in Fawkner will be completed in early July. The $800,000 pitches are available for all sporting clubs to book and access.

In early July, the netball pavilion at Charles Mutton Reserve in Fawkner will have the refurbishment and female-friendly facilities completed. This $450,000 project will enable women and girls to get changed in a suitable facility when playing sport.

A small skate park will be constructed in Elms Court in Gowanbrae and is expected to be completed in September. The park is being built in response to a request from the community and is part of the $1.2 million improvement works for Elms Court.

Works for the Wheatsheaf Community Hub project are starting with demolition work at the former Glenroy Primary School site to be finished in July. The hub will become the new home of the Glenroy Library, kindergarten and will include maternal child health, neighbourhood learning and childcare services.

New sportsfield LED lighting will be completed at Sewell Reserve in Glenroy in July. This $450,000 upgrade will allow the football club to play and train at night.

The Brunswick Mechanics Institute forecourt works will be continuing, with expected completion in October. The $1.26 million works will open up the forecourt for patrons to activities and performances and create a new civic space right in the heart of Brunswick.

Council’s temporary parklet will be located on Westbourne Street outside Brunswick North Primary School. A parklet is a structure located within street parking bays to re-purpose part of the street into public space for the community to enjoy.

Female-friendly changerooms at Dunstan Reserve will be finished by July. This upgrade to the Brunswick West ground cost $900,000 and will ensure that women and girls have suitable places to get changed when playing sport.
