10:30 Am – 11:15 Am: mAnAgIng CHALLEngIng BEHAVIORS / TUESDAY’S CHILD & PAREnT PAnEL

This panel-style workshop, moderated by Tuesday’s Child, addresses common behavior challenges in children with developmental differences. The parents on the panel have children with developmental delays including Sensory Processing Disorder, ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Each parent will talk about behaviors that they found particularly difficult to manage or change and how their child’s diagnosis may have impacted the solution. They will share techniques they used to reduce temper tantrums, manage bedtime and mealtime routines, increase compliance and improve the overall relationship with their children. A Q&A ses-sion will follow the panel discussion.

kEY TAkEAwAYS:• Unique opportunity to hear and talk about behavior with parents whose children have multiple individual differences.• Parents will learn positive behavior intervention techniques to help their kids take “no” for an answer and follow directions.• Learn basic tools to create a consistent and predictable environment for kids with regulatory and attention issues.

ABOUT TUESDAY’S CHILD: Tuesday’s Child helps families address behavioral issues through individualized training for both parents and children. We work with families who need more than standard parenting advice. Our evidenced-based program centers on an individualized approach that enables our team to address each family’s situation. Tuesday’s Child has been helping parents bring out the best in their spirited children for 30 years. For more information, visit www.TuesdaysChildChicago.org or email [email protected].

11:30 Am - 12:15 Pm: UnDERSTAnDIng SEnSORY PROCESSIng In ORDER TO SUPPORT ATTEnTIOn & DEVELOPmEnT/LORELL mARIn, LEEP FORwARD & LEEP BEYOnD & mICHAJA PREnDERgAST, PREnDERgAST PEDIATRICS

wORkSHOP TOPIC: Does your child have difficulty attending in class? Are you told your child does not stay with the group for circle time or a group activity? Does your child have difficulty attending to a task? Does your child engage with other kids? Many times we meet children or receive referrals from different programs because a child is having a difficult time attending or follow-ing the “rules”. Learn how to provide simple strategies that can be used at home and school to help set your child up for success!

We don’t all learn the same way…Therefore, we should not all be taught the same way! There are some simple solutions to help adapt the environment and provide learning and interpersonal supports to help your child succeed. You need to work together with your child’s teacher to help share what works best for your child.

wE wILL DISCUSS: • Different learning styles (i.e. visual, auditory, kinesthetic)• Ways to provide low cost strategies to help your child succeed• Sensory Supports to help with regulation• How to set up a positive communication system between home and school• Share an example of how to present your child to their teacher/school• How to bring your child’s “team” together

ABOUT SPEAkERS: Lorell Marin, MST, Developmental Therapist and Founder of LEEP Forward. Lorell has over 17 years experience working with children with developmental differences in a variety of capacities including teacher, trainer, early intervention pro-vider and currently founder and director of LEEP Forward. Lorell decided to create a program when she saw a gap in the services for children with special needs aged 3-5 once they aged out of early intervention. Her eclectic approach holds DIR®(Developmental Individual-Difference Relationship-Based Therapy) at the center of the program and prioritizes a team approach.

Michaja Prendergast received her masters degree in Occupational Therapy from Western Michigan University. She is driven by a passion for her work with parents and children who are affected by sensory processing challenges. The last five years she has spent working with kids with developmental differences using a DIR/floortime approach. She recently opened up Prendergast Pediatrics and seeks to have kids thrive where they are and find ways to provide therapy in unique ways and changing settings to support progress in all areas of life.

12:30 Pm – 1:15 Pm: nAVIgATIng THE IEP PROCESS / SUSAn R. SIngERmAn, mA

wORkSHOP TOPIC: Creating an original Individualized Education Program (IEP) or updating an existing one at an annual review can be a daunting process. There are so many prescribed steps to be followed, so many participants from the school and/or district, and all of the hopes and dreams for our children that we want to be reflected in their school plans. Parents can make the process more manageable, and feel empowered in working towards a positive outcome by understanding the legal format, coming to the meeting with a clear understanding of what their goals are, and having strategies on how best to participate in the meeting. We are here to help you demystify the IEP process and empower parents by providing them with information about what to expect and how to effectively advocate for their children.

kEY TAkEAwAYS: • Understanding the legal process• Understanding the outcomes including – types of services, minutes per week, accommodations, etc.• Knowing how to prepare before the meeting• Knowing the best ways to actively participate in the meeting to create the plan they want

Once it is determined that a student meets the criteria to receive special education and related services, an IEP will be developed. An IEP is a written statement of the educational program designed to meet the student’s needs and is developed by a team. The IEP includes a detailed description of what will be done to give the student the extra help needed. The IEP will change based on the student’s needs—it is like a road map showing where the student is and where he or she is going.

ABOUT SUSAn: Susan Singerman is a speech/language pathologist who has been in practice for more than 35 years. She serves children from infancy through adolescence with have a wide range of communication profiles, and provides a range of services including diagnostics, therapy, case management, and school advocacy. She has two basic goals for all of the children that she serves… “to get through school with his/her ego intact and to have a happy life”. The development of strong nonverbal and verbal communications skills is key in achieving these goals.as school personnel on an ongoing basis in regards to the children on her caseload.
