RCMP track down leads in Mac’s armed

robberyPatrick Kolafa

| inSide Drumheller

Drumheller RCMP have recovered some evidence that could prove to be key in track-ing down the culprit in-volved in an armed rob-bery early Wednesday morning. At about 2 a.m. on No-vember 6, three masked men entered the Mac’s/Husky gas bar and con-venience store on South Railway Avenue. One of the culprits produced a handgun and demanded money from the lone clerk. Th ey then fl ed the store on foot making way with cash, cigarettes and lottery tickets. Th e clerk was not in-jured and by Wednesday afternoon, the store had reopened for business. Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins said the police are awaiting surveillance footage and have recov-ered some evidence near the scene. “Th ere were some items recovered today that were directly associ-ated to the incident,” said Hopkins on Wednesday afternoon. “Th e evidence recov-ered during the day will be subject to DNA anal-ysis, and any person that has had to provide DNA will be identifi ed.” Drumheller RCMP continues to investi-gate the incident. If you have any information that could prove helpful, contact the Drumheller detachment at 403-823-7590. If you wish to re-main anonymous and possibly qualify for a cash reward, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Take me with you! Some residents might be a little envious of a fl ock of Canada Geese, who were rest-ing on the Red Deer River near the Gor-don Taylor Bridge on Wednesday morning.

The geese were a little behind on their fl ight south after winter descended upon Canada in a fl ash this year.

MaxHi, my name is Max.  I am a playful cat with an inquisitive nature and I

have grown weary of living at the Adoption Centre. I would like to trade my current living arrangement for a sunshiny spot to call my own.  Do you have such a spot? I am litter trained, up to date with my shots and

Now that the weather has fl ipped the switch to winter, getting out of bed in the morning just got a little harder. Th ere is the daily trek through the cold to the car in the morning and scraping ice off car windows. Th ough it may be tempting to skip that fi nal step, residents are being asked to make sure ice is thor-oughly scraped away. Th e Drumheller RCMP will be setting their sights on obscured windows now that the weather has turned frosty. “It’s one of the things I’ve always put a high priority on. I will be stressing it the members of the Drum-heller detachment to pay close attention to vehicles driving with obscured vision, especially in the morn-ing when it’s dark,” said Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins.

Hopkins explained the fi ne isn’t very large, but the consequences could be dire if residents choose to drive with obscured windows. “For driving with an obscured windshield the penalty is a fi ne of about $67. It’s not an exorbitant amount,” said Hopkins. “Our main concern is the safety of everyone using the road, like pedestrians or other vehicles.” Drumheller detachment RCMP offi cers will be en-forcing obscured windows over the winter. “It only takes a couple seconds to scrape your wind-shield. Yes, it’s cold outside, but take the extra time to clean your windshield and the life you save could be your own or someone near to you,” said Hopkins. “It’s very easily fi xed, so take a minute to clean your window before putting your vehicle in motion.”

The Drumheller RCMP will be increasing enforce-ment in regards to obscured car windows now that winter is in full swing. The fi ne for frosty windows

isn’t severe, but the RCMP are concerned with the safety of pedestrians and other drivers.

Sudoku SolutionLast Week's Crossword

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the num-bers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the num-bers will appear by using the numeric clues already pro-vided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Normally when fall rolls around, fi eld work at the Royal Tyr-rell Museum slows down considerably, but a new fi nd is keep-ing crews busy even as snow blankets the province. P a l a e o nto l o g i s t s from the Tyrrell Mu-seum believe the skeleton is from Hyp-acrosaurus, a large hadrosaur (duck-billed dinosaur) that lived about 68 million years ago. Hadrosaurs roamed throughout western North Ameri-ca and measured up to twelve metres long. Th is is the second hadrosaur collected in Alberta in the space of a month. A discovery on October 1 at Spirit River, near Grande Prairie, made interna-tional news. “It’s been an incred-ible year for dinosaur fi nds,” said Andrew Neuman, executive director of the Royal Tyrrell Museum. “Th is surge in fossil fi nds has supplemented our own work this fi eld season due in part to increased awareness and diligence among industry and keen-eyed amateurs.” Museum staff re-ceived a call from the Degner Construction Group on October 23 to investigate a fossil fi nd. While digging a trench for a new hous-ing development by Qualico Communi-ties, Degner employ-ees found a series of fossils about six me-tres below the surface. Together with Mu-seum staff , the Degner crew used its large ex-cavator to remove the soil, rock and other material above the fossil, allowing it to be secured and safely transported back to the museum on No-vember 5. So far, a tail and hips are visible in the exposed portion of the fossil, and some skull elements have been identifi ed. Th e Leduc fossil will be stored in the muse-um’s collections until it is prepared for fur-ther study.

This was the fi rst St. An-thony’s Alumni volleyball game, where former players are invited back to take on this year’s team.
