Dr. Malcolm Schulz Now Offers Surgery to Treat Heartburn and Reflux at JCHPatients who suffer from severe acid reflux disease now have an

alternative to traditional treatment options at JCH… Dr. Malcolm

Schulz offers a revolutionary surgery procedure that does not require

incisions and offers reduced pain, faster recovery and no visible scar.

Dr. Schulz is the first specialist in our area to perform surgery with the

revolutionary TIF (Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication) procedure,

using the innovative EsophyX® device to treat gastroesophageal

reflux disease (GERD).

“The TIF procedure can significantly reduce reflux and improve quality

of life,” said Dr. Schulz. “After the TIF procedure, clinical trials show

that most patients can eat and drink foods they avoided for many

years. Reflux no longer impacts their life like it previously did.”

Reflux medication like PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) can help relieve

patients’ heartburn symptoms, but they don’t solve the underlying

anatomical problems or prevent further disease progression. Even on

PPIs, many patients are still unable to eat the foods they want to

or have to sleep sitting up to reduce nighttime reflux. In addition,

recent studies have shown that long-term use of PPIs can lead to

inadequate absorption of minerals such as calcium and can result in

bone fractures.

Dr. Malcolm Schulz Now Offers Surgery to Treat Heartburn and Reflux at JCH

The next step in evolution of surgery, the TIF procedure is based on established principles of surgical repair of the antireflux barrier, except that it is “surgery from within” performed transorally (through the mouth). The procedure reconstructs the antireflux valve between the stomach and esophagus. As food is swallowed, this valve opens and closes, creating a physical barrier to reflux. Because the procedure is incisionless, patients experience less pain, shorter recovery and no visible scar.

Many patients are wary of traditional open or laparoscopic antireflux surgery with incisions, risks and possible side effects like bloating, flatulence and difficulty swallowing. But TIF requires neither internal incisions nor dissection, lowering the hurdle for restoring the antireflux barrier and allowing earlier surgical intervention.

With millions of Americans diagnosed with GERD and not fully satisfied with their treatment options, TIF offers an excellent alternative. To date, more than 10,000 patients have been treated worldwide with excellent results.

“Recent studies of the TIF EsophyX procedure have shown that it can reduce patients’ dependency on medications, with 79% of patients remaining off their daily medications after two years and experiencing a dramatic improvement in their quality of life,” said Dr. Schulz. “We are very excited to be able to offer our patients the same incredible benefits as more invasive procedures, without making incisions.”

Jersey Community Hospital Welcomes

Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon! Craig Beyer, M.D.,

Do you feel like you get good sleep?

Are you well rested when you wake up?

Do you have plenty of energy during the

day without feeling like you need a nap?

By Regina Plummer, Sleep Lab Technician

If you would like to schedule a sleep study, contact the center at (618) 498-8394.

Rest Easy... Take a Sleep Study and Fight Fatigue!

If not, you may need to visit the JCH Sleep Lab for a sleep study. Not getting healthy sleep can be the root of many health problems because your body does not get the rest it needs to heal and restore itself. There are over 80 sleeping disorders, the most prevalent being sleep apnea, which is where the airway closes off during sleep, causing the person to wake up long enough to breathe and then go back into the shallow stages of sleep, repeating this pattern throughout the night. Sleep apnea prevents the person from getting to the deeper stages of sleep, which is where the body fully relaxes. Some of the health issues that are commonly seen with sleep apnea include: high blood pressure, heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, acid reflux, weight gain, frequent nighttime urination and depression.

When you don’t get the energy you need from sleep, your body will retain fat and cause you to crave high-calorie foods such as carbohydrates and sweets. The more weight you gain, the more severe the sleep apnea becomes because you have more tissue in the back of your throat, closing off your airway. By treating the sleep disorder, you are allowing your body to function the way it is supposed to, healing itself.

In order to have a sleep study, you must have a referral from your physician. Your doctor’s office can call Scheduling for your sleep study. We are open Monday–Thursday nights. Feel free to take a look at the new sleep rooms on the Med Surg floor in rooms 218 and 220. The beds have very nice pillowtop mattresses, there is a comfortable recliner and a flat panel TV. There is also a shower, and you will receive a coupon for a free breakfast if you would like to stay and eat in the cafeteria. A sleep study is the easiest test you will ever take.

Girls on Track

Thanks from the Wellness Center!

The 10-week Girls on Track program will be offered this fall. Participants meet twice a week after school. Each practice lasts about 75-90 minutes. The season culminates with a 5k event where all Girls on the Run and Girls on Track participants throughout the St. Louis region come together to celebrate girl power. The program combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing workouts. The goal of Girls on Track isn’t just to get these young ladies running. It’s also intended to encourage them to have a stronger sense of identity, learn to stand up for themselves in a healthy manner, give and receive

support in a peer group, develop an improved body image and participate in a community service project… all while having FUN at this impressionable time of life. Program information is available at the school/site offering the program in early to mid August for any girl interested in participating. Registration for the program will take place online starting at the end of August. The 5k event is in mid-November.

Jersey Community Hospital has launched a new mobile heart monitoring system to help improve outcomes for heart attack patients. The LIFENET System is the first cloud-based data network of its kind, offering the JCH team and emergency medical services (EMS) tools to provide faster treatment for patients who experience a dangerous type of heart attack known as STEMI (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction).

STEMI poses a serious threat to the heart muscle and can result in a patient’s death or serious disability. The faster patients receive treatment, the more likely they are to have a positive outcome. LIFENET can help shorten the critical period between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and the start of lifesaving medical care.

This interval is known as door-to-balloon time, referring to the start of angioplasty (the inflation of a balloon catheter) or the placement of a stent (the insertion of a small mesh tube) within the patient’s blocked artery. Studies show that when door-to-balloon time is 90 minutes or less, patients experiencing a STEMI heart attack have significantly better outcomes and shorter hospital stays.

LIFENET can play a key role in reducing door-to-balloon time, ensuring that patients get the treatment they need as quickly as possible. The system is cloud-based (information is stored in the Internet rather than at a specific site) so the data is available on demand to anyone in any location at any time.

JCH8

JCH Launches New Mobile Monitoring System to Help Improve Heart Attack Patient Outcomes

Using a secure Internet connection, LIFENET lets paramedics send data from the field via a wireless digital electrocardiogram (ECG). JCH’s care teams are then able to quickly identify STEMI patients, determine where to route them for care, and have staff prepared before the patient arrives, reducing time to treatment.

In addition, LIFENET allows JCH teams to see the same patient data available to EMS crews. Our teams can also engage with remote clinicians for decision support through a dedicated LIFENET iPhone application. By speeding communication among members of the care team, we save critical time in delivering treatments.

The LIFENET mobile monitoring system at JCH was made possible through donations from the JCH Hope Chest Resale Shop and the JCH Annual Appeal. With the help of its donors, shoppers and volunteers, the Resale Shop provided $35,000, while Annual Appeal donors contributed a total of $30,000 toward the purchase of this lifesaving equipment.
