The Marystown Shipyard - Cow Head Fabrication Facility, North Atlantic Refinery, Hebron Project at Bull Arm, Vale’s construction of the hydromet plant at Long Harbour and fabrication and transport opportunities at Argentia are all contributing to the economic, residential and business growth that is occuring in the eastern region of the province.

These projects are creating exciting and rewarding spin off opportunities. They are creating new businesses, attracting business investment and helping businesses avail of supplier development opportunities.

In Placentia, NLOWE member Jane Hynes, owner of The Three Sisters Pub and Restaurant, is taking advantage of the influx of business in Argentia.

Did You Know?Hebron

Hebron, estimated to contain the second largest reserves in the province’s history behind Hibernia, is the next offshore project to come on stream, with first oil expected before the end of 2017. The Hebron drilling support module (one of the topsides modules) contract was awarded to the Marystown shipyard and was officially under construction in May 2013. Construction of the Hebron gravity based structure is fully utilizing the Bull Arm site, which is close to the communities of Sunnyside, Arnold’s Cove and Come by Chance. These phases of the project are providing employment and economic spin off benefits through the purchase of goods and services.

North Atlantic RefineryNorth Atlantic Refinery in Come by Chance is a major employer in the area.

According to their website, they employ over 500 employees and contribute $160 million a year directly to the provincial economy. Employee wages and benefits account for $60 million of this contribution and $100 million can be attributed to local business procurement.

Vale – Long HarbourPhase I of the state of the art processing facility that Vale is building in Long

Harbour, Placentia Bay, is about 90% complete. According to an article in the Thompson Citizen on June 31, 2013, approximately 4800 people are employed at Long Harbour with about 3600 people on site daily. The Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development state in an April 2013 news release that since work began at the Long Harbour plant, 80% of the employment has occurred in Newfoundland, with over 17 million person hours of employment generated. The positive impact of the project affects companies in the region that provide goods and services during the construction phase and as they move into operation in 2013/2014. Businesses that provide accommodations, food, clothing, piping and all points in between are benefiting from the project.

Large steel components are being assembled by a company in Argentia for the construction of the facility in Long Harbour, Placentia Bay. Jane is using YouTube as a marketing tool to promote catering service opportunities for training sessions, meetings and to feed work crews. The Argentia business park is just an eight minute drive and Long Harbour is just a 25 minute drive. Jane and her staff can even cater to gluten free and casein free requests!

According to the national census, Newfoundland and Labrador has seen an increase in population of 1.8 % from 2006 to 2011. Much of this growth may be attributed to the increase in major projects in the province. Many communities are also experiencing growth, including the town of Whiteway.

According to Census Profiles from Statistics Canada, Whiteway has seen a significant growth in population of 33.2%., from 220 in 2006 to 293 in 2011. NLOWE member, Laurelyn Berry, owner of Ocean Delight Cottages, Shag it Cafe in Whiteway and the Doctors House Inn and Spa in Green’s Harbour, moved to Whiteway a year and a half ago. The Doctor’s House Inn and Spa had its grand opening on May 30, 2013 and part of their marketing strategy is promoting the Inn and Spa as a great place for corporate getaways and agritourism. Future plans include a banquet hall and mini-convention centre. The Doctor’s House Inn and Spa will be hosting a NLOWE Information and Networking session on September 30, 2013.

The Eastern region is a great place to do business!

is suitable when a “rough idea” of what the text is about is required; these services are not capable of generating an accurate, consistent and professional-quality translation. In addition, machine translation cannot ensure confidentiality of information as is the case with language professionals. In the case of a bilingual friend, there is no guarantee of written fluency or skill in translation or interpretation; this can result in inaccuracies and often produces results that are less than professional. When it comes to professional communications, a bad translation or inappropriate interpretation can radically alter the message. For these reasons, a professional and certified translator is the best option for delivering a professional message.

Sue also has a message of her own for women who are interested in going into business for themselves: “Relevez les défis, sinon, être en affaires à votre compte ne vous satisfera jamais”, or in English, “Embrace challenge, otherwise, being in business for yourself will never be satisfying.”
