Company ProfileTeknoware OY was established in 1972 with the objective of producing electronic items for interior lighting of buses. It was a time when �uorescent lamps were introduced for commercial vehicles as an alternative to the normal incandescent bulb providing lower energy consumption and longer life. However, before there were certain limitations to these lamps. They needed special electronic units as they could not be driven directly from the vehicle’s DC power supply.

Teknoware introduced several novel solutions, which provided both higher reliability and superior passenger comfort while in use. Soon the product o�ering expanded to o�er complete lighting systems for all mass transport vehicles including Railways. Today, Teknoware provides lighting solutions to several market leading brands such as Mercedes Benz, Volvo, Irisbus, Bombardier, Alstom and Siemens to name a few.

In the late 70’s, the product range expanded to include emergency lighting for buildings. Since then there has been constant product development going on. Today the product solutions have technically very little in common with the early design. However, they still share the same innovativeness and passion for improved design, quality control and reliability.

Teknoware has since then won many esteemed awards for innovation and new technology. Teknoware is a global leader in special lighting applications and one of the reputed supplier in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Paci�c.

In May 2008, Teknoware took a very important step towards serving the Middle East region by starting its own regional o�ce in Dubai - Teknoware Middle East FZCO within the Dubai Airport Free Zone. Before that Teknoware has been serving the Middle East market directly from the Finland O�ce.

With a local presence, Teknoware is today in a position to provide the same level of service that has made the company a market leader in Scandanavia and one of the leading names in Europe. Teknoware, has in a short span of time, supplied to more than 100 projects in the region. Key projects that the regional o�ces continue to service include JAL Towers, Dubai Metro, Emirates PTI Hotels, Dorra Bayat Dubai Marina and Dubai Gate Towers at Jumeirah Lake Towers area and Porto Arabia in Pearl Qatar.

Teknoware Central Battery System is an automatic monitoring & self testing system, where the batteries are located in a single location feeding power to all the emergency & Exit lights connected to it. The Central Battery System does not require regular visits to individual lights for its maintenance and failure checks. In case of a power failure, the CBS panel switches ON all the Emergency lights connected to it providing power from the batteries near it. The advantage of using a Central Battery system is that each of the luminaires connected to the panel have a unique address and any luminaire/battery/panel failure is easily noti�ed to the maintenance team.

If required, the batteries in a Central Battery System can be designed for a life of up to 25 years. When these batteries are required to be changed, it is much easier and quicker. Much higher lighting levels can also be achieved by using Central Battery Systems.

Design Stage 1

Requirements, Standards & Speci�cations The design speci�cation, selection and installation of emergency lighting is covered by an extensive range of International legislation / standards and local authority jurisdictions. The project speci�c requirements anduser / customer preferences should also be considered in this initial stage of design. The commonly used standards are EN Standards and BS Standards.

Design Stage 2

Mandatory Lighting locations Risk Assessment comprises the next stage of positioning and selecting the emergency lighting equipmentaccording to the nature of area to be protected. This should cover speci�c hazards and highlight safety equipment and signs. The pictures covers most of the areas to be covered by the System.

Design Stage 3

Exit Signage

Directional sign is required when sight of an emergency exit is not possible or doubt may exist. It should be noted that all the emergency escape route signs and luminaires should be of the same design format till the �nal emergency escape exit

Design Stage 4

Escape routes lighting level After positioning of all mandatory luminaires and exit signages, it maybe necessary to provide additional luminaires so that a required light level is reached along a escape route. This is done by identifying the maximum permissible distance between each luminaire type or from the wall. The photometric data of the luminaire clearly provides the distance so that the required lux level is maintained.

Design Stage 5

Lux Level Calculations

Lux level calculation provides a detailed graphical representation showing the lux levels and the number of luminaires that would be required to su�ce the requirement by the relevant standards and regulations.

Design Stage 6

Self-contained or Central Battery System?

Self contained system utilzes their own battery, charger and changeover circuits. They also includeconversion kits that can be used to enhance mains �uorescent luminaires, enabling them to provide illumination in the event of a normal power supply failure.

The Central Battery system is linked to a remote back-up power supply which provides power in the event of a normal power supply failure. These are easier to test & maintain and are suitable & cost e�ective for larger installations.

Design Stage 7

Testing and Maintenance

The tasks that include the testing and maintenance should also be considered in the design as they would ensure complete system integrity and capacity to ful�l its task at all times. Essential servicing should be well de�ned to ensure that the system is fully operational.
