Cassius Butts was appointed by President Barack Obama in 2011. He is responsible for delivery of SBA programs in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. During his appointment, Cassius Butts has had oversight of two record-breaking years for SBA Lending in Region IV; surpassing $7.7 billion in SBA-backed loans to small businesses within the aforementioned eight states.

Prior to joining SBA, Cassius was employed as one of three Chiefs of the Real Estate Owned Division within the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development where he began his federal career as a Presidential Management Fellow in 2002. Previous to his civil-federal career, since 1992, Cassius has worked in leadership positions for Nations Bank, Fleet Bank and Bank of America (MBNA) as well as the City of Atlanta. In addition, as a small business owner and consultant, he co-founded CB Consulting Group, LLC, which primarily offered entrepreneurial strategy and community engagement services.

As a strategist and advisor, Cassius has worked with many elected and appointed officials including Mayor Kasim Reed of the City of Atlanta. He is the recipient of many national, regional and local honors and awards. Cassius was recently appointed to the National Partnership Council in March of 2013. He is a 1994 graduate of Morehouse College, received his graduate degree from Clark Atlanta University’s School of Public Administration in 2002 and Certificate of Grant Writing from Emory University’s Life Learning Institute. 2013 Small Business Summit Biographies

Lee May, DeKalb County Interim CEO, was appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer of DeKalb County by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal on July 17, 2013. Prior to this appointment, Commissioner Lee May represented District 5 on the DeKalb Board of Commissioners (BOC) and served as Presiding Officer of the BOC.

May is the youngest person in the history of DeKalb County Government to be elected to serve on the BOC. DeKalb County voters elected him to the BOC in July 2006 re-elected him in July 2012 to serve a second term. May campaigned on a platform to address the concerns of the people, and he stands on a promise to make a positive impact in his community.

Most recently, May served as Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee and a member on the Public Safety and General Safety Committee. He also served on various national and local county organizations and is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. May is a graduate from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology holding a Masters of Divinity Degree, and of the historic Clark Atlanta University.

   

Sharon Barnes Sutton, Presiding Officer of the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners and District 4 Commissioner, has devoted much of her life to serving the Stone Mountain community where she resides. As a community servant, Commissioner Sutton possesses more than 25 of experience in professional and volunteer aid to DeKalb.

Stan Watson, DeKalb County District 7 Commissioner, is a dedicated and proven leader who has served DeKalb County communities and communities across Georgia for more than 30 years. Commissioner Watson continues his unwavering commitment to achieving strong communities, open and honest government and “making a better DeKalb.” As a state legislator and county commissioner, he has been a strong supporter of the small business community.

Charles W. Blackmon, Executive Director for the DeKalb Enterprise Business Corporation (DEBCO), has more than 25 years of working with small business owners seeking financial resources.

Luz Borrero, Deputy Chief Operating Officer for Development, oversees several DeKalb County Departments including Human Services and Community Development, Planning and Sustainability, Economic Development, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the DeKalb Peachtree Airport and Workforce Development. Ms. Borrero has undertaken the initiatives of developing a strategic plan for economic development and the overhaul of permitting operations.

Bernie Burgener, Director of Greenhouse Accelerator, is a member of the Green Chamber of the South and leads the Chamber’s Greenhouse Accelerator, whose objective it is to create green jobs through the support of early-stage green startups and sustainability initiatives within existing companies.

Myra Cisse, Managing Member of Certification Consultants LLC, assists women, minorities and veteran business owners, in obtaining certifications necessary to compete in the federal marketplace. Ms. Cisse has more than 20 years of banking experience with business owners and has closed millions of dollars of SBA loans.

Terri Denison, Georgia District Director of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), is responsible for overseeing the delivery of the SBA’s capital, counseling and training, and government contracting assistance programs throughout the state of Georgia.

Dr. Samuel Franklin, Senior Analytical Lead at Google, advises Fortune 50 companies and their advertising agency partners on the application of advanced analytics to digital marketing program optimization and retail strategy development. Dr. Franklin is also active in Atlanta’s technology start-up and venture capital communities.

2013 Small Business Summit Biographies

Bella Lane, Founder of Bella Lane Designs (BLD), encourages clients to come out of their comfort zones to reach a bigger pool. Since 2003, BLD has helped companies build the visual tools essential for business growth on the web. The company specializes in creating marketing materials that promote sales and websites that motivate customers to act.

Noelle Lloyd, Manager of Marketing and Public Relations for the DeKalb County Chamber of Commerce, is responsible for managing outreach and communication to the membership and community at large. Her duties include marketing, media relations and social media strategy.

Sharon Macaluso, Area Director and Business Consultant with the University of Georgia Small Business Development Center (SBDC), focuses on meeting the needs in the small business communities in DeKalb and Rockdale counties. Ms. Macaluso has worked with the UGA SBOCsince 1995, and has consulted with more than 2,000 business owners.

Rick Martin, Director of the International Trade Center of the University of Georgia Small Business Development Center (SBDC), has more than 30 years of experience in international business in the private and public sectors. The SBDC provides one-on-one trade consulting and delivers export training to Georgia’s business community.

Victor Mbaba, President and Founder of Africa’s Children’s Fund, assists under-served families in the United States, the Caribbean and Africa. Mr. Mbaba helps to improve people’s lives through mentoring, scholarships, housing, medical assistance and food security programs.

Linda McCulloch, Founder and President of Design That Works Communications Inc., provides marketing communications, branding and graphic design to growing companies. In addition, the company helps clients re-position themselves for new or larger markets, changes in their business focus and mergers and acquisitions.

Donzell Newkirk, Account Executive for State & Local Government at Lenovo, is responsible for identifying opportunities for new business while selling the benefitsof the full catalog of Lenovo products. Mr. Newkirk has uncovered and won new business against the competition to Fortune 1000 Enterprises and St.ate & Local Govemment entities over the past, five years.

Florena Oliver, Vice President of Operations and Chief of Staff for the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council, is responsible for daily operations and oversight of activities designed to support more than 700 ethnic minority business enterprises and approximately 180 corporate members.

Vaughn D. Irons, CEO of Asset Property Disposition (APD) Solutions, a national neighborhood revitalization firm in Atlanta, providing strategic direction for Community Development Consulting, Real Estate Acquisitions & Marketing Services, Asset/Property Management, Property Disposition & Homeowner Retention/Loss Mitigation Strategies. Mr. Irons is also Chair of the Development Authority of DeKalb County.

Vernon Greene, Chief Information Security Officer for DeKalb County, has more than 25 years of experience in Information technology (IT) management and support services. Mr. Greene developed and led IT emergency response teams during emergency and disaster situations.

Kenneth L. Huff, Supplier Diversity Manager for Georgia Power, manages supplier diversity and business development activities. He began his career with the Southern Company in 1984. Mr. Huff has gained extensive financial and operational experience through work assignments in finance and accounting, power generation, customer operations, unregulated marketing and customer service.

Kenneth L. (“Ken”) Huff is the supplier

diversity manager for Georgia Power.

In this role, he manages the supplier

diversity and business development

activities of the company.

Ken began his Southern Company

career in 1984 as an accountant

at Gulf Power. During his career,

Ken has gained extensive financial

and operational experience through

work assignments in finance and accounting, power

generation, customer operations, unregulated marketing

and customer service.

Prior to his selection as the supplier diversity manager,

Ken managed Georgia Power’s community relations and

community development activities in Henry County, one of

the top 10 fastest growing counties in the United States.

In this role, he worked with business leaders, educators,

mayors and legislators to enhance the quality of life and

advance the economic development of the community.

Ken has served in numerous community and civic

leadership roles since 1984. Currently, he serves as

Chairman of the Board of the Georgia Minority Supplier

Development Council. He also served as the 2008

Chairman of the Board of the Henry

County Chamber of Commerce.

Ken served as a Commissioner on

the Henry County Development

Authority from 2008-2012. From

2004-2008, he served on the Board of

Directors, Executive Committee, and

Finance Committee of the Southern

Regional Medical Center (a 406-bed

hospital located in Riverdale, GA).

A native of Pensacola, Fla., Ken graduated magna cum

laude from the University of West Florida’s School of

Business; he also received an Executive MBA degree

from Auburn University.

Ken is the proud father of one daughter, ChristiAna.

Ken enjoys fishing, golf and riding his GoldWing GL1800

motorcycle.

Georgia Power is the largest subsidiary of Southern

Company, one of the nation’s largest generators of

electricity. The company is an investor-owned, tax-

paying utility that serves 2.3 million customers and has

operations in all but four of Georgia’s 159 counties.

Michelle J. Menifee, Senior Business Development Manager for the DeKalb County Office of Economic Development (OED), manages business and retention services. She is credited with initiating the countywide OED Developers Tour, leading the process for the County to become an entrepreneur-friendly community, and organizing the annual small business summit.

Lonnie Abdul Saboor, Manager of Small Business Finance for Invest Atlanta, has provided financial leadership to several commercial projects in the City of Atlanta since 1979, induding Underground Atlanta’s Minority Tenant Program and the renovation of Greenbriar Mall. Mr. Saboor has arranged financing for more than 600 businesses in the city, representing over $500 million in public/private funds that resulted in the creation of more than 5,000 new jobs.

Jenny Trautman, Founder of Evenview, consults with groups to bring their strategies into clear focus, activate their plans and navigate change. Prior to founding Evenview, Ms. Trautman worked in a variety of industries including software, media, high tech manufacturing, consulting and higher education.

Linda Travis, Founder and Principal of The Brand RenovatorSM, renovates brands and helps new brands build lasting legacies. Ms. Travis often works behind the scenes on product innovation and messaging for Fortune 500 brands.

Roderick R. Wallace,Director of the DeKalb Microenterprise Institute (DMI), manages a business training program that is designed to assist new and existing rnicroenterprise business owners. The DMI program, which is operated by the DeKalb Enterprise Business Corporation, has been in existence since 2.004, and has trained more than 400 entrepreneurs.

Dorna F. Werdelin, Supplier Outreach and Communications Manager with the Department of Administrative Services State Purchasing Division, conducts several monthly training sessions for companies wishing to do business with the State of Georgia and acts as a dedicated resource to those businesses.

Richard Smith, Vice President of Economic Development at Georgia Piedmont Technical College, is responsible for continuing education programs, customized training for business and industry and coordinating training programs with Georgia Quick Start.

Vanessa Parker, Founder of PinkBoss, Inc., empowers women to use their passion and skills to generate income that will allow them the flexibility to do what they love every day. Ms. Parker credits her success to community involvement, which landed her the opportunity to facilitate the Black Enterprise Youth Entrepreneur Conference for the past four years.

Maria Peck, Owner of Sweet Devil Moon Tapas Bar, has approximately 20 years of sales and marketing experience. Ms. Peck works on community outreach initiatives, coaching financial education programs, one-on-one business consulting and lending.

 

Taube Ponce, Senior International Trade Manager for the Georgia Department of Economic Development’s Global Commerce & International Trade Team, has significant experience in the international trade arena that helps her understand and work with Georgia companies on the exporting market. Ms. Ponce was an integral part of the state’s efforts that netted Georgia a federal State Trade and Export Promotion Grant for 2012, to help small businesses expand their products and services internationally.

Marc Parham, Managing Partner at the Partec Consulting Group, primarily focuses on system design, business efficiency, project management, security and training. The Partec Consulting Group has provided services throughout the world for more than 18 years.

Isaiah Hill has a passion for playing and creating music, and his influences within gospel, jazz and rhythm and blues has given him a level of musical diversity, which is not commonly seen among young musicians. The influences of Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, John Coltrane, Bill Evans and many other notable musicians help to shape his musical artistry.

Isaiah was the guest artists at the 2012 Peach Drop celebration Downtown Atlanta, and noted as the youngest pianist at age 15, to bring in the New Year. While Isaiah spends countless hours composing, and performing, he also understand the importance of a quality education. He is a great student at Stephenson High School. Isaiah is the recipient of the 2013 Berklee College of Music tuition scholarship in the area of Jazz studies, and recently received a scholarship to attend in the Fall of 2014 below are just a few of his accomplishments:

Awards and Recognitions • Nominated for 2012 Lead America National High School Leadership conference • Received Berklee College of Music tuition scholarship for 2013 • 2012 and 2013 Governors Honor’s nominee for outstanding pianist • Performed as the youngest Pianist at the 2012 Peach Drop celebration in Downtown Atlanta • Top three finalist in the 2011 Omega Psi Phi talent search as pianist • 2011 Traveled to Hawaii to perform at the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor • 2012 DeKalb NAACP ACT-SO nomination for the category of pianist • Co-section leader for 2011 Stephenson High School Marching Band • Selected to perform as the 2013 Jazz Roots Series at the Cobb Energy Center

Musical Accomplishments • Selected to play at Spivey Hall for their 2013 High School workshop • 2012 and 2013 Guest Pianist for Georgia Congressman Hank Johnson Art Scholarship Reception • Selected to perform with the 2012 and 2013 DeKalb County Directors Jazz Band • Pianist for the 2011Jazz Band at Stephenson High School • Percussionist for the 2011 Stephenson High School Marching Band. Together, these groups work to create quality jobs and investments to expand the tax base and support balanced growth.

Bonds issued by the Authority are DeKalb County’s primary incentive to promote jobs creation and investment. The Authority issues two types of bonds: 1) Taxable, generally more than $2 million and must be an approved type of business which will attract and/or retain jobs in DeKalb, and 2) Tax-Exempt, less than $10 million and must be a manufacturing facility. No limit applies for 501 (c) (3) organizations.
