Grating-based NIR spectrometers NIR grating-based spectrometers are a popular and versatile tool for applications ranging from moisture detection and chemical analysis to high-resolution laser and optical fibre characterisation. They use an InGaAs (Indium Gallium Arsenide) detector array and cover a wavelength range from 900-2500 nm. Typical set-ups include absorbance, transmittance or reflectance measurements.

Description and key features

• High-stability 256 or 512 elements InGaAs-array detector in a compact optical bench with two-stage thermoelectric cooler and low-noise electronics. External hardware triggering functions allow users to capture data when an external event occurs, or to trigger an event after data acquisition. This capability can be especially useful for capturing data from automated processes or from devices such as solar simulators that flash synchronously.

• Reliable, robust spectrometer with deep thermoelectric cooling down to -20°C for low dark current.

• Fast data transfer – great for applications with chemometric models.

Near-infrared spectroscopy used in photovoltaics panel development With their modest cost, compact size and great flexibility, UV-VIS-NIR miniature fibre-optic spectrometers are attractive analytical tools for photovoltaic materials research and quality control. Typical applications include analysis of the optical properties of solar cell materials, spectroradiometric measurement of solar simulators used in panel testing and quality control in panel production.

Case study

We evaluated NIR spectroscopy as a method to measure the reflection of photovoltaic panel materials. A manufacturer of thin film photovoltaic panels requested NIR reflectivity analysis of several coated glass samples. Measurements were conducted from 1200-2100 nm under ambient lab lighting conditions. Because the absorbance of photovoltaic panels is so critical, determining the reflectivity at panel edges and elsewhere is a good indicator of the light loss at those areas. The use of anti-reflective coatings and glass dopants are among the approaches manufacturers may evaluate in improving panel efficiency.

Experimental conditions

Five coated glass samples were analysed with an Ocean Optics NIRQuest256-2.1 spectrometer configured with a 100 µm slit and optimised for the range from 1200-2100 nm. The sampling set-up comprised a tungsten halogen light source, 400 µm reflection probe and an optical stage. A specular reflection standard was used as a reference. Spectrometer operating software completed the set-up.

The glass samples were placed on the sample holder uncoated side down, to ensure the probe measured the reflection from the coating through the glass. The optical stage helped to position the probe at 90° to measure specular reflectance.

Measurements were taken under overhead lighting conditions. The high-powered tungsten halogen light source provided continuous illumination from 360-2000 nm. The distance from the tip of the reflection probe to the surface of the sample was measured at ~7.0 cm for each sample, to simulate production conditions.

Ocean Optics NIR spectrometers use a high-performance InGaAs-array detector in a compact optical bench with thermoelectric cooler and low-noise electronics. The NIRQuest256-2.1 is suited to applications involving higher wavelengths (peak responsivity is ~1900 nm). The spectrometer’s rapid integration times – spectral acquisition of 1 millisecond is possible – make it viable for high-production environments.

Results

The measurements showed good stability with no averaging and boxcar smoothing. The reflection spectra for the samples (see graph below) demonstrated that reflection values increased as a function of wavelength comparably across all five samples, peaking at about 2000 nm. Also, the gap between the least reflective and most reflective samples was relatively narrow at the lower and upper ranges of the wavelength range, with the greatest variation observed near 1700 nm.

Reflectance intensity of the coated samples ranged from ~25% at the lower wavelengths to as much as 80% at the higher wavelengths. These values are relative to the response of the specular reflectance standard, which has nearly flat reflectivity across all NIR wavelengths.

Conclusion

As developers of photovoltaic materials seek improvement in cell efficiency, the need for convenient analytical tools to evaluate glass coatings, dopants and other materials is great. Optical sensing systems such as NIR spectrometers, thin-film measurement systems and solar-simulator testing units can be configured for both research lab and process line applications.

NIR spectroscopy can be used to determine the specular reflectivity of coated glass samples relative to each other and to known reflectance standards. As a result, the solar-light-capturing efficiency of the five sample coatings can now be inferred using the Ocean Optics spectrometer and accessories.

Case study – high-precision determination of alcohol concentration in wine with an FTIR spectrometer

The standard approach to measuring alcohol concentration in wine has been via distillation and density measurement. This technique is very accurate but very time consuming, requires qualified personnel and is not easily automated. A new approach has been developed using NIR spectroscopy and taking benefit of the ethanol versus water spectral signatures in the spectral range 1600-1800 nm. The use of the spectral data and a proper chemometric model led to extremely high accuracy and repeatability from a much simpler and cost-effective process.

Real-time moisture analysis of solid samples in industrial manufacturing processes• Fast and accurate moisture measurement

• Easy-to-integrate to your process with off-the-shelf reflection probes

• Sensitivity to ultra-low concentrations

Moisture is a critical parameter in many industrial processes

Moisture is an important parameter for quality control of several products. It is possible to measure moisture content without any sample preparations by using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Typical applications of moisture measurement are found in industrial manufacturing processes including pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processes, paper production and agriculture applications. Moisture measurement itself is non-destructive and fast, normally taking only a few tens of milliseconds per sample. Spectral Engines’ spectral sensors let you optimise your measurement based on the requirements of application with fully programmable device technology.

Case study

Moisture content was analysed from paper samples. The level of moisture varied from 0.1-10.1%. Even the low concentrations were easily detected with high accuracy. Other potential applications for Spectral Engines’ moisture sensors are pharmaceuticals, food processing, bioenergy and extrusion processes.

Conclusion

Spectral Engines’ compact and cost-effective NIR spectral sensors enable fast, non-destructive, high-performance, ultra-low-moisture-content measurements in real-time process-monitoring applications. Sensors can be used in process and portable instrumentations and they are easy to combine with off-the-shelf process probes.

Lasers, laser spectroscopy systems and laser safetyAcal BFi are also working with leading suppliers of IR lasers and laser safety devices (such as goggles, curtains and windows). Lasers can be supplied as stand-alone units or integrated into complete IR spectroscopy solutions.

Most popular IR lasers features

• Nanosecond solid state lasers: 3 - 10 ns, 10 Hz to kHz, tunable from 195 to 2600 nm

• Picosecond solid state lasers: 5 - 30 ps, 10Hz to 86 MHz, 210 nm to 16 µm

• CO2 lasers (10.6µm or 9.3 µm), CW from 10 to 500 Watts

SFG spectrometer

This is the ideal laser spectroscopy tool for in-situ investigation of surfaces and interfaces. It operates from 4300 to 625 cm-1 and provides <6 cm-1 spectral resolution. The heart of the system is a picosecond Nd:YAG laser generating 25 ps pulses that pump an OPG/DFG delivering from 20 to 260 µm per pulse across the IR range.

Initially developed as a custom solution for one of our customers, this has become a standard product and the reference for worldwide SFG spectroscopists.

Mid-IR spectrometer for gas sensing

A custom solution was recently developed by one of our suppliers in collaboration with a scientific lab, with the aim to develop highly sensitive trace gas sensors. These sensors used an external cavity quantum cascade laser (EC-QCL), which enabled relatively broad wavelength tuning (eg, Δλ ≈ 1 µm) over the mid-infrared (mid-IR) molecular fingerprint region. The sensors used multi-pass cells to detect ppm to ppb levels of a range of species, including relatively large molecules, such as pollutants, hydrocarbons, and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
