Introduction
With over 3500 courses annually in more than 26 languages, Festo Di-dactic is second to none in providing practice-oriented training using ex-perienced instructors. Our range:
Qualification in automation technology
The training aims of this course cov-er a wide spectrum of automation technology and take into consid-eration the status of the respective technology. Problems and sample solutions are always taken from ac-tual industrial applications. Practical work on and with actual industrial components always plays a central role for us in the seminars on auto-mation technology.
Qualification for the change process
We know what constitutes an excel-lent company: focussing on custom-er satisfaction, corporate and quality strategy, employee satisfaction, effi-cient processes, responsible and tar-get-oriented employee management, job-oriented qualification, positive business results, positive impact on society. These seminars prepare em-ployees for their new tasks as a re-sult of the change process.
Support during the change process
Our consultants advise your employ-ees on the development of an inde-pendent and autonomous working style. The aim of this is to enable the company to efficiently structure work, organisation and qualification processes.
Our didactic-methodological framework
Seminars and training courses, work-shops, business games, best prac-tice events, consulting, plant devel-opment projects.
Consulting, analysis, in-house training
We work with you to plan courses customised to your needs and con-duct them on your premises. Joint analysis of requirements can be a very useful initial step.
Qualification success is measurable
One of the key criteria for course quality is rapid implementation of course content in day-to-day work. You will only choose a provider again if a close examination of the success of the qualification program shows that they have achieved the stated goals: – Fewer machine failures – Faster repairs – Higher system availability – Higher quality of repairs – Better cooperation between
departments – Greater number of fault prevention

Introduction
Success with Blended Learning
Blended learning (integrated learn-ing) involves a combination of e-learning and traditional teaching methods, allowing participants to take advantage of both worlds and create valuable synergies.
Changes and value creation:Knowledge gives a competitive edge
The complexity of communication poses new challenges for the mod-ern manager. New technologies are developing rapidly and job descrip-tions are constantly changing. The maintenance technician, for exam-ple, is now in many cases also fulfill-ing an optimisation and training role in addition to troubleshooting and maintenance.
The use of modern vocational and further training offers is vital to the successful implementation of strat-egies if you are to gain a competi-tive edge. Learning has become a constant feature of day-to-day work. Specialised knowledge is constantly being extended.
Lifelong learning: online further training
The students design the learning process to suit themselves and their own requirements and personal cir-cumstances. Computers and the In-ternet feature strongly among the learning media here. Web-based learning programs offer knowledge in a format that is compact, com-prehensible and can be accessed at any time. The world of automation technology and mechatronics can now also be explored at the click of a mouse, whether at school, at work or at home.
E-learning offers new opportunities
E-learning with Festo Didactic facili-tates individual further training – when and where it suits you. A wide range of training modules can be selected depending on your per-sonal requirements, enabling you to study the fundamentals of automa-tion technology and mechatronics by yourself.

Introduction
Together with our partner, Intelligent Media Systems AG, we offer you learning solutions for all your opera-tional and training needs:
Standalone solution on CD-ROM
All web-based training programs from Festo Didactic can be installed as CD-ROM variants on standalone computers. The student can then im-mediately access learning progress checks, notes functions, a glossary and a search function.
This learning solution is ideally suit-ed to companies wishing to gradu-ally and cost-effectively introduce e-learning and gain experience with this new medium.
Network-based learning concept plus ILS Classroom Manager
You can install the web-based train-ing programs from Festo Didactic to-gether with the ILS Classroom Man-ager on all computers connected via a network. You determine the number of licences you need. The network plug checks how many us-ers are actually using the system at any one time.
The Classroom Manager allows you to administer dates and users and offers a classroom chat function, classroom forum function, notes, messages, tutor support, learning recommendations and learning progress functionality.
Content for existing platforms
You may already be using a learning management system for your voca-tional and further training. If so, then our web-based training programs can be used together with select-ed functionalities of the Intelligent Learning System within existing plat-forms. Our learning solutions meet the AICC and SCORM standard and can therefore be used in most learn-ing management systems.
Content plus ILS learning management system
The overall concept of content plus learning management system ena-bles you to design and deliver op-timum blended learning arrange-ments.
Our overall system offers numerous options for administering partici-pants, managing courses, reporting, chatting, discussion forums, student groups, learning success checks and comprehensive tutor support. The optional authoring tool allows you to create individual web-based train-ing programs and tests. The result? Project-oriented lesson design in a totally new dimension.
ASP solution
The ASP solution is an easy and cost-effective entry-level solution for e-learning that offers full use of all functionalities of the ILS. The on-ly thing that is required is access to the Internet. It makes no differ-ence whether learning takes place at work, at school or at home.
We take care of everything else: pro-vision of the content, access require-ments, evaluations, hotline and tutor support from trained Festo Didactic teletutors.
And since we maintain the content ourselves, you can rest assured that you will always be up-to-date.

The entry-level introduction to blended learning
The aim of this learning arrange-ment is to promote transferable knowledge in order to improve stu-dent performance in practical situa-tions. The students are viewed as ac-tive co-designers of their individual learning process.
They are – depending on the initial requirements – included in the plan-ning process, with the aim that they start to exercise greater autonomy in managing their own learning proc-ess. By doing this, the concept pro-motes decision-making and respon-sibility.
Practical learning phases are alter-nated with self-tuition or group work with unrestricted division of time.

Modular web-based interactive learning programs and other media are available on a wide range of subjects.
– WBT Mechatronics– WBT Sensors– WBT Project planning– WBT Pneumatics– WBT Fieldbus technology– WBT Information acquisition– WBT Electropneumatics
In a kickoff workshop, the partici-pants and tutors learn about the con-tent of the course and together de-fine training aims.
Blended learning with learning management system
Lessons learned over recent years show that online learning is most successful if it is supported by tuto-rials and complemented by conven-tional face-to-face seminars.
This concept is also referred to as blended learning, i.e. a mixture of online learning and seminar learning.
The advantage for users is that the different approaches promote learn-ing and different learning styles and personal circumstances are accom-modated.
After this they enter the self tuition phase with unrestricted division of time. Modular web-based interac-tive learning programs are tailored to a wide range of training require-ments. Communication takes place via e-mail, forum, chat and audio conference: students can even chat over coffee!
Practical exercises provide a plat-form for application of the newly acquired knowledge, which is then put into practice “on the job” with a coach.

The highlights
The name of the game: Motivation
Star Trek, the Orion spacecraft and the Starship Enterprise. The world of spaceships and robots fascinates us – even if it is brought to us us-ing artifice and often huge amounts of papier maché. The Robotino® is real, its movements the result of ad-vanced programming and the tasks it performs originating in industrial or scientific reality or the sporting world.
Plug and play
The Robotino® has one thing over many of its rivals – it is ready-to-use. Its brain – an embedded PC with Linux kernel and Compact Flash card – simply needs to be switched on and then immediately starts to move on the basis of the permanently in-stalled demo application selected.
Kick and rush
The Robotino® is quick and optimally prepared for the addition of sensors and actuators such as grippers or shooting devices. All of these charac-teristics combine to give the Roboti-no® a good chance of emerging victo-rious in sporting competitions.
Wireless communication
Robotino® View, the interactive graphical programming and learning environment, communicates directly with the robot system via wireless LAN. Compilation of the code and downloading to the controller is no longer necessary.
Exciting interaction
With just a few clicks of the mouse you can transmit signals to the motor controller, display, scale and evalu-ate sensor values or display and fur-ther process a live camera image. You can solve even very complex exercises gradually and with rela-tive ease using prepared function modules.
Many training aims ...
– Sensors– Drive technology– Motor activation– Control technology– Mechatronics– Programming (symbolic/C++)– Image processing
... conveyed in an exciting way
The overriding objective is to make learning fun, on the basis that in-teresting problems go hand in hand with learning success. Examples of problems of this type are „How does the Robotino® find its way from A to B without ending up in a corner?“, or for an even harder problem, „What is the shortest path?“

The mobile robot
Robustly constructed
The three drive modules of the Ro-botino® are integrated in a sturdy, laser-welded stainless steel chassis. The chassis is protected against col-lision by means of a rubber protec-tive guard with integrated switching sensor. Numerous additional com-ponents such as sensors, handling units or shooting devices can be mounted on a platform using pre-pared threaded holes.
Robot dimensions:– Diameter: 370 mm– Height incl. housing: 210 mm– Overall weight: approx. 11 kg
Fast mover
With its omnidirectional drive, Ro-botino® moves quick as a flash for-wards, backwards and sideways in all directions and also turns on the spot. Three sturdy industrial DC mo-tors with optical shaft encoders and gears with interchangeable pinions permit speeds of up to 10 km/h.
These are the best prerequisites for successful use in sporting competi-tions.
Everything in view
The chassis contains nine infrared distance sensors. An analogue in-ductive and an optical sensor is al-so available by means of which the Robotino® can sense an aluminium strip or a coloured line, for example.
The Robotino® is supplied with a col-our webcam with jpeg compression.
The compressed webcam image can be transmitted to an external PC via the WLAN for image evaluation by Robotino® View or used as a live camera image.
An extremely powerful decompres-sion module enables you to addition-ally use the images from the webcam for standalone control. The Roboti-no® may not be able to find a needle in a haystack, but it can see what‘s going on around it with a high de-gree of accuracy.
Uninterrupted use
Power is supplied via two 12 V lead gel batteries which permit a running time of up to two hours. The scope of delivery includes a further set of bat-teries for even more uninterrupted learning pleasure!
The scope of delivery likewise in-cludes a charging station which al-so serves as a maintenance station. The wheels remain freely movable on the charging station, which means that they can also be used during the charging period for experiments in electrical drive or control technology.

Programming with Robotino® View
Always onlineRobotino® View is the interactive graphical programming and learning environment for Robotino®. It com-municates directly with the robot system via wireless LAN. Compila-tion of the code or downloading to the controller is no longer necessary. You can transmit signals directly to the motor controller, display, scale and evaluate sensor values or dis-play and further process a live cam-era image. Thus Robotino® becomes an online experimentation field, for example for control technology.
Intuitive programmingRobotino® View is a visual program-ming language. Sequences and oper-ations are created by wiring function modules. The program corresponds to your image of the robot‘s behav-iour and is produced „intuitively“. This means that even parallel proc-esses (multitasking) can be de-scribed and easily programmed.
Behaviour-based languageThe Robotino® is not human, howev-er its behaviour can be described by way of emotions. „Vigilance“, for ex-ample, is the measure of proximity to the objects communicated to the Ro-botino® by the sensors. The reaction „Avoid!“ or „Pursue!“ can be pro-grammed in response to this. A large number of ideas can thus be easily mapped to Robotino® states.
The work spaceThe work space is divided into two areas:– Display of the function module dia-
gram or flow diagram created. The current input and output values of the function modules can option-ally be displayed.
– Display of the parameter settings or internal data of the status units, for example live camera image or PID parameters of the motor con-trol system, which you can change online.
The library classes– Logic contains all of the key logic
functions– Mathematics contains the basic
mathematical operations– Vector calculation with conversion

Separating station
FunctionThe Separating station differentiates workpieces based on their drilled hole depth and separates them in-to two different material flow direc-tions.
Workpieces placed on the conveyor are transported to the depth meas-urement point. An analogue diffuse sensor checks the drilled hole depth. Workpieces of the type „cylinder body“ (deep hole) are transported to the end of the conveyor. Work-pieces of the type „housing“ (shal-lower hole) are directed towards the rear via the second conveyor using a pneumatic branching gate with ro-tary drive. Fibre-optic through beam sensors with optical sensors monitor the material flow on the conveyors.
The Separating station can be sup-plemented with MPS® downstream stations in two directions.
Analogue and digitalThe diffuse sensor supplies both an analogue and a binary output sig-nal. This facilitates different training levels. The binary switching output can be adapted to the measurement requirement by means of a simple teach-in stage.
Flexible assemblyThe Separating station permits the creation of flexible assembly lines using MPS® stations. Combined as-sembly processes such as cylinder assembly and assembly of workpiece inserts in the housing can be realised using the Separating station.

Storing station
FunctionThe Storing station places work-pieces in and takes workpieces out of storage. The station is equipped with three storage levels, with a lev-el each for six red, six silver and six black workpieces. The workpieces are gripped using a pneumatic grip-per. The linear movement is execut-ed using a linear cylinder. The rotary movement is performed by an elec-trical servo drive with integrated con-troller. The stroke movement is ex-ecuted using an electrical linear axis with separate controller.
During placement into storage, a workpiece inserted in the Holder module is detected using the colour sensor. The workpiece is placed in the next free compartment in the cor-responding storage level based on the colour. Upon removal from stor-age, the workpieces are transported from the shelf compartments to the downstream station.
The Storing station can be employed as the first station or the last station in an MPS® combination.
Electrical DrivesThe latest drive technology for a challenging lesson: with the MTR-DCI, the motor, gear, power electron-ics and positioning controller form a compact unit for optimum position-ing of the rotation axis. The electrical mini slide SLTE with motor controller SFC-DC ensures a correctly regulated drive for horizontal positioning.
Colour-friendly!The tiny colour sensor detects the workpieces using an integrated white light source. It learns new col-ours easily by means of teach-in and activates one of the three switch-ing outputs when one of these is de-tected.

Process automation
Few industries have as many fac-ets or are as interesting as the proc-ess industry, which produces a wide range of products for the most di-verse areas of daily life.
On the one hand, the chemical indus-try produces preliminary products for other industries. This group in-cludes base chemicals, petrochemi-cals, polymers as well as refined and special chemicals. Key consumers in-clude the automotive, packaging and building industries.
On the other hand, chemical prod-ucts are used in the areas of health, the environment and nutrition. As well as the chemical and pharmaceu-tical industry, the process industry includes other sectors such as the biotechnology, paper and food in-dustries.
Even though the end products may differ, automation is making huge leaps forward in each of these ar-eas. International competition and the resultant pressure to continu-ally increase productivity as well as a continuously expanding range of variants and strict requirements for process and quality assurance de-mand automation solutions.

Train efficiently
Festo – The partner to the process industry
Festo is fast becoming a key part-ner to the process industry. It is only logical that the process automation learning system benefits from this know-how and is tailored to the re-quirements of different industries through its consistent modularisa-tion:
– Water supply and disposal industry – Food industry – Bulk goods industry – Chemical and petrochemical indus-
tries – Biotechnology/pharmaceutical
industries – Paper industry
Why stop production to facilitate training?
It is prohibitively expensive to shut down an industrial system to facili-tate training. Comprehensive train-ing in the individual areas of process automation requires industry-ori-ented model systems or training in-stallations. „Learning by doing“ and „process orientation“ are two princi-ples that are central to the success-ful imparting of the many detailed training aims in process technology. Simulation of a process engineering system on a PC provides the oppor-tunity of using a simulation as an ac-tual training system.

Control technology is clearly and practically explained using the P, PI or PID control algorithm. The temper-ature sensor – the reactor station us-es a PT100 resistance thermometer – supplies a unit signal of 0 – 10 V via the measuring transducer. The con-troller approaches the setpoint tem-perature via the continuously control-lable heater and keeps it constant.
Using a constant flow rate, the three raw materials are mixed to a recipe in the mixing station. The flow rate is recorded by means of an electronic flow sensor with impeller and addi-tionally displayed using a variable-area flowmeter. The controller ad-justs the necessary flow rate via the pump with analogue control.
Pressure control ensures constant-ly high filter quality during flushing. The pressure sensor with LCD dis-play, analogue output and switching output always supplies the correct measurement variable. The control-ler ensures constantly high filter quality during rinsing via the propor-tional pressure regulator.
The filling level of the dosing tank is detected in the bottling station using an analogue filling level sensor. The controller regulates the filling level to the required setpoint value via the continuously controllable pump. The filling level in the dosing tank is kept constant during filling, which optimises the quality of the filling process.

MPS® PA 204 Complete system
FunctionThe system is made up of the filtra-tion, mixing, reactor and bottling sta-tions. The filtration station filters a liquid. The filtrate is pumped from the first tank into the second tank through the filter using various proc-ess valves. The filtered liquid is then fed into the first tank in the mixing station. The mixing station mixes different recipes from three reser-voir tanks. The finished mixture is pumped to the reactor station, where it is tempered. Depending on the recipe selected, different tempera-ture profiles with different stirring times are activated. The bottling sta-tion fills the liquid into bottles. These bottles are transported to the filling position via conveyors. A pneumatic separator separates the bottles. The bottles are filled with different filling quantities from the dosing tank in accordance with the recipe selected.

Filtration station
Function
The filtration station filters liquids. The filtrate is pumped from the first tank into the second tank through the filter using a knife gate. The fil-tered liquid reaches the second tank via a butterfly valve with pneumatic semi-rotary drive. The filtered liquid can be pumped onwards to the next station using a separate pump. The filter can be rinsed using a rinse pro-gram. Regulated compressed air is additionally blown through the filter to loosen deposits.
Measurement and control Sensors detect the filling level of the container in the filtering station. This permits lessons on simple control exercises for monitoring the pumps right up to complete control projects involving complex processes.
Pressure control ensures constant-ly high filter quality during flushing. The pressure sensor with LCD dis-play, analogue output and switching
output always supplies the correct measured variable. The controller with P, PI or PID control algorithm ensures constantly high filter qual-ity during rinsing via the proportional pressure regulator. Control technolo-gy is clearly and practically explained in this way.

Mixing station
Function
The mixing station mixes different recipes from three reservoir tanks. The liquid from one of the three reservoir tanks is pumped into the main tank in a controlled manner by opening the respective two-way ball valve. The finished mixture can be pumped to the next station via a sec-ond pump – or pumped back to the reservoir tank.
Measurement and control Using a constant flow rate, the three raw materials are mixed to a recipe in the mixing station. The flow rate is recorded by means of an electronic flow sensor with impeller and addi-tionally displayed using a variable-area flowmeter. The output signal from the flow sensor is converted to a standard signal from 0 – 10 V. The mixing station can also be actuated through binary means using the in-tegrated comparator. The controller
adjusts the necessary flow rate via the pump with analogue control – using a simple two-point controller or various dynamic controllers such as P, PI or PID. This permits a clear explanation of control technology on various levels.

Reactor station
Function
The reactor station tempers a liquid. Depending on the recipe selected, different temperature profiles with different stirring times are activated. A cooling pump is activated to cool the liquid. The tempered liquid can be pumped onwards to the next sta-tion using a separate pump.
Measurement and control Sensors detect the filling level of the reservoir in the reactor station. This facilitates lessons on simple control exercises for monitoring the pumps right up to complete control projects involving complex processes.
Exact adherence to the various tem-perature profiles when activating the recipes is achieved by means of temperature control. The tempera-ture sensor (PT100 resistance ther-mometer) supplies a unit signal of
0 – 10 V via the measuring transduc-er. The controller with P, PI or PID control algorithm can approach the setpoint temperature values via the dynamically controlled heating unit and keep the values constant. Sim-ple control exercises, for example control using the two-point control-ler, can be realised using the reactor station. Control technology is clearly and practically explained in this way.

Key basic operations in many proc-ess engineering systems involve heating and stirring. The compo-nents of the reactor station are de-signed to permit a wide range of ex-periments in this area.
Infinitely adjustable heating with control signal from 0 – 10 V. A safe experimental environment permits integrated linking of the heater with the integrated temperature switch – thus ruling out the possibility of „running dry“ in a practical way.

Measurement and control The filling level of the dosing tank is detected in the filling station us-ing an analogue filling level sensor. The controller regulates the filling level to the required setpoint value via the dynamically controlled pump (0 – 10 V).
The filling level in the dosing tank is kept constant during filling, which optimises the quality of the filling process. Various control algorithms such as P, PI or PID can be applied and optimised during experiments.
The characteristics of the control process can be modified using hand valves already integrated. Control technology is clearly and practically explained in this way.

Transporting, separating, filling
Few segments of the diversified process industry are associated with such a wide range of end products as the food industry. All foodstuffs, whether dairy products, baked goods, juice, beer or wine have their own requirements with regard to the handling and production of the cor-responding end products. Transport-ing, separating, dosing and bottling play an important role here.
Optical sensors, adjustable using background suppression, monitor transportation on the conveyors of the filling station.
The filling quantity can be easily ad-justed by selecting different recipes.
The pneumatic separator ensures that there is never more than one bottle at the filling position.

Process automation – Networked system
FunctionA networked system enables level control, flow rate control, pressure control and temperature control sys-tems to be operated simultaneously. Each station is equipped with a Sie-mens DR19 and can therefore also be operated individually. The sta-tions are connected to the host com-puter (PC) via Profibus DP. Access to the process variables of all sta-tions is provided by the operation and visualisation software InTouch or WinCC.
Step by step to greater complexityTraining starts with individual groups of students at the individual stations tackling tasks of similar complexity. The complexity can be gradually in-creased later by merging the stations into one system.

Training aimsThis system complements the train-ing aims of the Compact Worksta-tion.– Commissioning and maintenance
personnel: Realizing bus networks. From plan-ning, design and configuration through to realisation.
– Operators: Process operation, monitoring and performance training as part of system management.
The networked system can be sup-plied as a version with 4 stations (level control, flow rate control, pres-sure control and temperature con-trol) or as a version with 3 stations (no pressure control).
In both cases, a connecting station comprising a pump and 8 x 2/2-way solenoid valves controls the flow of water between the stations. Six or eight capacitive sensors (depend-ing on whether there are 3 stations or 4 stations respectively) monitor the level of the containers. Supplied with a SIPART DR 19 controller and S7 313-2DP.
Integrated systems: from the control station to the fieldModern communication technology enables you to „see“ the sensor from the control room. The critical ques-tion remains as to which signals are relevant for display or which inter-vention options should be made accessible to individual groups of people. The system provides a quick insight into complex relationships and points to trends in the latest technologies and methods through the use of hardware and software from market leaders.
SIMATIC WinCC is a PC-based con-trol and monitoring system designed for visualising and controlling proc-esses, sequences and machines.

Process automation – Compact Workstation
Compact Workstation with level, flow rate, pressure and temperature closed-loop control systems
Optimisation relativeto your space requirement
Maybe you‘re restricted in the amount of space you have available but you want each of your training workstations to offer a high level of complexity. If so then the Compact Workstation with four integrated closed-loop control systems is the solution for you. As shown in the flow chart, the individual control sys-tems can be activated by simply re-positioning the ball valves. The flex-ible piping system enables you to change the flow scheme or integrate other components quickly and easily.
Function
The four control systems in the Com-pact Workstation can be operated individually. The level and flow rate control systems can be structured as a cascade control system through the addition of an appropriate controller.
The layout of the sensors and servo drives permits experimentation with both continuous (e.g. P, I, PI, PID) and discontinuous action controller types (e.g. 2-point controllers). The pump can either be controlled directly or operated in controlled speed mode.
The manipulated variable of the con-troller in the flow rate and pressure control systems can alternatively act upon a proportional directional con-trol valve. A ball valve with pneu-matic drive is built into the return between the high-level container and the lower reservoir. The pneu-matic drive can be used to simulate a “load” for switching on a disturbance in the level control system or as an on-off valve for emergency switch-off.

Pneumatic driveWith ball valve and signal box. Train-ing aims: Design and application ar-eas of various metering and shut-off devices when controlling the flow of liquids.
Intelligent in the field – closedloop control with the CPX/FEC valve terminal and the FED 120 touchpanelThe Festo Front End Controller withintegrated web server and Ethernetinterface is ideally suited to currentcommunication tasks.
Piping and instrument flow chartAn important part of project work in process engineering is develop-ing a piping and instrument flow chart. A piping and instrument flow chart explains the electrical, meas-uring and control technology func-tions using measuring points and final control elements. The measure-ment variable or another input vari-able, its processing, its direction of action and directional specifications and positions should follow from the chart.
