Introduction Burlington has been consistently ranked as one of Canada’s Best Places to Live. In 2017, MoneySense rated Burlington as the best mid-sized city to live in Canada. Situated at the northwestern end of Lake Ontario, Burlington is a city in the Regional Municipality of Halton. Along with Milton to the north, Burlington forms the west end of the Greater Toronto Area. Economically, Burlington is strategically located near the geographic centre of the Golden Horseshoe, a densely populated and industrialized region of over 8 million people.

Economic Development Burlington Economic Development Corporation’s (BEDC’s) priority is to lead, facilitate and advance Burlington’s efforts for continued economic growth and diversification, job creation and revitalization, entrepreneurship and innovation throughout the city. BEDC recently launched TechPlace to help businesses better connect with resources and programs that are available. This service pack serves to help guide your businesses through some of the resources that are available to help you innovate and connect to the larger innovation ecosystem. The Innovation Corridor has a strong presence of world-class academic and research centres.

The University of Toronto (ranked in the top 25 universities globally and the top 50 most innovative universities in the world) and its partner hospitals raised the most research funding of any university in Canada, totaling $1.1 billion in 2016.

Hamilton’s McMaster University (ranked in the top 100 universities globally) has the country’s leading industry-sponsored research programs.

The University of Waterloo has the world’s largest co-op education program. Waterloo is also the #1 Canadian university for venture-capital-backed student businesses.

The University of Waterloo and Natrix Separations Inc. (Burlington) are partnering to improve chromatography products used in separation of mixtures in life science, pharmaceuticals and beverage markets.

Angel One Investor Network is a member-based, not-for-

profit organization of accredited investors who live, work or have strong interests in Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton and other communities in Southern Ontario. Angel One provides venture capital to entrepreneurs and start-ups that are at an early stage but have a solid, credible plan for high growth and a dedicated management team to execute it.

The Ontario Venture Capital Fund is a joint initiative

between the Government of Ontario and leading institutional investors. The fund is managed by Northleaf Capital, a leading Canadian private fund manager that invests primarily in Ontario-based and Ontario-focused venture capital and growth equity funds, which in turn support innovative, high-growth companies predominantly in Ontario.

Haltech is a not-for-profit Regional Innovation Centre (RIC) funded by the Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs and is located at TechPlace in Burlington, Ontario. Haltech helps tech companies transform ideas and innovations into well-positioned, growing ventures through business advisory services and mentorship.

TechPlace is a one-stop destination for new and growing technology companies located in Burlington. Led by BEDC and with support from partners across the public and private sectors, TechPlace is dedicated to connecting, developing, and advancing entrepreneurs at all stages. TechPlace provides access to space, programming, mentorship, networking and resources to new and growing technology companies.

Federal Support

Example

The Federal Budget 2017 proposes:

• To invest up to $950 million over five years to support business-led innovation superclusters that have the greatest potential to accelerate economic growth

• To make available up to an additional $400 million through the Business Development Bank of Canada on a cash basis over three years for a new Venture Capital Catalyst Initiative

• To make more than $2.2 billion on a cash basis available to support clean technology research, development, demonstration and adoption.

The federal government has invested $75 million in Burlington's L-3 Wescam for research and development of its new high-tech air, land and sea surveillance cameras and sensors. The federal government’s repayable contribution is provided through its Strategic Aerospace and Defence Initiative (SADI).

The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) tax incentive program is the largest single source of federal government support designed to encourage research and development (R&D) in Canada. Each year, the SR&ED program provides over $4 billion in investment tax credits (ITCs) to over 18,000 claimants. Of these, about 75% are small businesses.

fgrgfd IRAP The Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) supports innovative technology development projects that enhance processes and products and boost market competitiveness. Research grants can potentially provide up to 50-80% financial reimbursement to offset internal project labour and Canadian third-party consulting fees to a maximum $50,000–$500,000 per year.

The Jobs and Prosperity fund is a the 10-year, $2.7-billion fund that helps the government partner with businesses to enhance productivity, innovation and exports.
