The main factors to consider when choosing a skimmer are:

application is the skimmer for use in lake, river, coastal waters, open ocean, ice etc?

portability does it need to be carried into position by one or two people, or can you use a davit or crane to deploy it?

oil typethe type of oil you are likely to recover, low or high viscosity

capacitythe amount of oil you may need to recover

Skimmers are used for

collecting oil, oil products,

and similar pollutants from

the surface of water.

Different skimmers can recover oil at different rates. All of Vikoma’s skimmers are rated on the actual volume of pollutant recovered and not, as many other manufactures quote, the capacity of the pump - which is generally much higher.

Vikoma skimmers are designed to recover fl oating pollutants with very little free water pick up, less than 2% free water content, in the case of disc skimmers. This minimises the volume of storage required and reduces the diffi cult and costly task of storing and transporting recovered pollutants, and reduces the processing costs of recovered oil.

Vikoma believes in providing high quality, highly effi cient products and make every effort to test and certify their performance. Our standard range of skimmers has been independently tested by Lloyds Register to measure the recovery capacity and effectiveness of each skimmer.

Vikoma offers a range of skimmers, using various recovery

methods, to deal with different types of oil in different scenarios.

Recovery methods include skimming with oleophilic discs, toothed ‘star’ discs, brushes and weir arrangements as well as suction techniques.

Vikoma has developed the design and use of oleophilic disc technology to provide highly effi cient recovery of oils with minimal water pick up.

Vikoma’s Komara range of oleophilic disc skimmers are probably the best known and most widely used skimmers in the world.

Oleophilic disc skimming offers highly effi cient recovery of oil, generally, with less than 2% free water pick up. This reduces the amount of storage required and cuts costs for reprocessing and disposal of dirty water.

Oil is attracted to and adheres to the discs, as they rotate through the water and fl oating oil. The oil is lifted towards the scrapers where it is channelled into a collection sump and is pumped away into storage tanks.

The disc scrapers are manufactured from a specially designed fl exible polymer, which precisely follows the contour of the disc and ensures that even the lightest oils are recovered with high effi ciency.

The action of the discs, combined with a large capture width, is very effective at drawing surface oil towards the skimmer. Disc skimmers are ideal for use in most situations. Komara skimmers have a shallow draft enabling them to be used in shallow waters while the robust design, and high capacity of the Komara 50 and SeaSkimmer 50 are ideal for offshore and ocean spill scenarios.

Star Disc skimmers offer outstanding recovery of highly viscous oils.

The patented Star Disc design was developed by Vikoma to recover heavy viscous oils, it combines the principles of disc skimming with mechanical action to lift viscous oil over a weir and into a sump to be carried away by a powerful transfer pump.

This recovery method boasts an extremely low water pick up, less than 2%, which makes the logistics of storage and transport much easier and reduces the need for secondary processing.

The unique action of the star disc creates a fl ow of oil towards the skimmer and can pick up the oil as a continuous sheet. The serrated disc edges claw into thick oil and pull it into the skimmer. The oil is then drawn over the weir lip and into a sump.

Komara Star skimmers have been used successfully in icy water, the strong discs can break up chunks of ice, and the pivoting disc banks avoid blockage.

The skimmers are designed to have a shallow draft for use in estuaries, close to shore and other shallow water operation, and specially designed fl oats to maximise the capture width and the fl ow of oil to the discs.

Star Disc Skimmers

effi cient recovery of high viscosity oils

robust aluminium construction

demountable lobe pump

The modular construction of the skimmer allows for easy transport over rough terrain. The disc bank and the lobe pump can both be removed from the body of the skimmer to enable the three separate modules to be carried by two people. The lobe pump can be used separately from the skimmer as an off-loading pump.

The design of the skimmer body makes it compact and rugged, and enables an easy fl ow of oil towards the disc banks. This is especially important with highly viscous oil which can be drawn into the skimmer as a continuous sheet.

For highly viscous oil situations a water injection system is available as an option, to help lubricate the fl ow of oil within the recovery hoses.

The system is driven by the effi cient Vikoma GP 10-2 powerpack, which has two independently controlled hydraulic pumps.

The Komara Star 20 can recover high viscosity oil at more than 20m3/hr. It is designed for use in coastal areas, ports, waste oil pits and inland waters. The robust aluminium construction is perfect for tough spill environments and it is designed to require minimal maintenance.

The toothed discs and wide capture width create a fl ow of oil towards the skimmer, and recover oil with minimal free water content of less than 2%.

The disc bank pivots to enable debris to pass through the skimming discs, allowing it to handle debris without blocking the discs. Debris is collected in a grill above the sump, where it can easily be removed .

The Komara Star 20 has a highly effi cient on board pump to handle even the heaviest oils. It can run dry without damage or the need for an expensive overhaul.

The Sea Devil’s twin disc banks will recover high viscosity oil at a rate of up to 70m3 per hour, making it ideal for large offshore spills. The robust aluminium construction and fender / fl oats make this skimmer suitable for the most challenging conditions.

The toothed discs claw into the oil and pull it towards the skimmer and into a central sump, from where it is directly discharged by a powerful on-board positive displacement VikoPump, rated at 104m3/hr. The pump is designed to transfer even the heaviest oils and can run dry for short periods without damage.

The Sea Devil can handle fl oating debris due to its hinged disc bank and reverse action. Smaller debris can pass through the discs and is collected in a grill above the sump without affecting the operation of the skimmer.

The Sea Devil has been used successfully in icy conditions, the strong toothed discs and pivoting disc banks enable to skimmer to be relatively unaffected by small chunks of ice.

For highly viscous oil situations a water injection system is available as an option, to help lubricate the fl ow of oil within the recovery hoses.

The system is supplied with the GP70 powerpack, which incorporates two important safety features: a spark arrestor to prevent sparks from the exhaust igniting an ignition source; and an engine overspeed shutdown valve to protect the engine and operatives.

Vikoma manufacture a range of weir skimmers for different scenarios from large spills at sea to lower volume industrial applications.

A weir skimmer has a lip which is positioned at the optimum level to allow the surface layer of oil to fl ow over the lip and be pumped away. Most weir skimmers have adjustable weir heights to allow for different thicknesses of the oil layer.

Weir skimmers are ideal for use in relatively calm waters and industrial situations. They can handle very high volumes of oil, though generally with a higher water content than a disc skimmer.

ideal for large spills

The Vikoma Cascade is a high capacity, hydraulically adjustable weir skimmer designed to be particularly effective in large oil spills where a high oil recovery rate is required. Two Cascade skimmers meet a Tier 1 response requirement under OPA ‘90.

The Cascade has a fl oating circular weir device with on-board hydraulically driven positive displacement VikoPump. The weir lies just below the oil surface and the top layer of oil fl ows over the weir lip and is pumped away to storage. The VikoPump is particularly adept at handling highly viscous fl uids and solids of up to 30mm diameter; it has been proven to be highly effi cient in aggressive environments and capable of maintenance-free operation and dry running for short periods.

The unique discharge outlet and hose fl oat assembly reduces hose drag and ensure stability and enables the Cascade to be used in a towed array at up to 2 knots.

A remote control console allows the operator to optimise recovery by varying the pump speed and hydraulically adjusting the depth of the weir relative to the oil thickness.

For easy transportation the Cascade’s arms are hinged and can be folded for transport and storage.

The system is supplied with the Cascade weir skimmer head, GP70 power pack and control console.

PowerpacksVikoma Powerpacks are matched and optimised to provide hydraulic power to drive our extensive range of skimmers and reels. The larger powerpacks are able to power other equipment simultaneously e.g. boom reels and skimmers with independent controls on the power pack or via a control console. All are fi tted with conveniently placed quick release couplings allowing rapid and easy connection of all our equipment. All our powerpacks conform to CE regulations and carry the badge.Vikoma diesel driven hydraulic powerpacks are available with additional safety features such as auto shutdown valves and spark arrestors. Powerpacks for use in hazardous areas are also available (ATEX).

All larger powerpacks are electric start as standard. Small powerpacks are hand start with additional electric start options available. Hydraulic starting or spring starting versions can be supplied at customers request.

PumpsHydraulically driven positive displacement pumps are carefully matched to skimmers to provide optimum pumping capability. The pumps have excellent suction characteristics, can self prime and can run dry for short periods. Pump design allows the passage of small pieces of debris often found in spills, to be passed through the pump without causing damage.Several of Vikoma’s skimmer systems have pumps which are designed so they can be used separately form the skimmer for other pumping duties.

HosesVikoma supplies high quality durable hoses to transport recovered oil to storage containers. Hoses are resistant to abrasion and give excellent service for many years and remain fl exible in the coldest of temperatures. All have very secure heavy duty fi ttings reducing the potential for leakage.
