The need for Higher-Education BPM Programs Background:Business Process Management [BPM] introduces a change in organizational focus from functional silos to integrated business processes. Driven by the need to compete in a fast-paced, real-time economy, organizations are beginning to recognize the need to achieve a process-centric organization. This not only requires an understanding and deployment of successful process management principles, but also the understanding and ability to improve end-to-end processes enabled by appropriate business process management systems and technologies. As organizations are beginning to realize the need to increase business process related skills, colleges and universities must also provide a learning environment that embraces the business process management practices of the new process-centric organization.Since BPM involves several organizational dimensions such as culture, governance, organizational issues, process, and technology, a BPM curriculum needs to be well rounded, containing courses in both soft and technical related areas. At present time, there are very few dedicated BPM programs in colleges and universities worldwide. Those that do exist vary in focus and coverage. From ProcessWorld 2006, session: Business Process Engineers of Tomorrow - The New Widener University MBA Program
In Israel:According to the analyst Einat Shimoni, most of the organizations "don't know how to implement BPM, including IT departments who don't understand its benefits".Neither are there any dedicated Higher-Education BPM programs. This document presents the variety of academic approaches to BPM and their implementation in universities and colleges around the world, pointing out the goals and benefits for the students, the institute and industry alike.
Page 2/17
Hi-Ed BPM Program Goals
To establish the foundation for educational BPM programs To support the institute vision of being innovative in its
academic approach by introducing BPM-related programs and subjects, in accordance with industry demands
To enrich the educational environment by introducing state-of-the-art tools and methodologies to the future decision makers and leaders.
To complement current courses by introducing business process management practical aspects in interactive workshops, implementing hands-on approach
To enable interdisciplinary academic approach when linking students from the different schools with a common framework for joint projects and business games.
To enable the institute to develop its own academic & business process model based on Higher-Education Processes Reference Model
The Opportunities and Benefits for the Institute
Offering BPM programs will attract more students and improve the academic position in competition with other academic institutes
Adding BPM subjects to current courses in most of the current tracks would make them more appealing to current and future students
Implementing an interdisciplinary approach will prepare the students better for industry demands.
Implementing BPM solutions and Higher-Education Reference Model would improve the administration of the institute
Increase chances of cooperation with companies by enabling the students to perform field-based BPM projects using contemporary tools and methodologies.
Page 3/17
Exposing students to real-life cases and not only theories and case-studies will increase their job opportunities
Expand the institute target audience by hosting and conducting on-demand BPM workshops for individuals and corporate.

Examples of BPM implementations in Academic Institutes:
In Leeds University – Implementing IDS-Scheers's ARIS Toolset, to achieve a strategic goal: "Improvement of core systems and processes - Business Process Management will help the University meet this Strategic Enabler." Processes reviewed and improved in the area of student administration – Confirmation, Clearing, Accommodation, Registration
In King Fahd University – Implementing Savvion solutions for improving business processes and functions across the university. More then 320 processes modelled in the area of Finance, scientific research, applied research, materials management, admission and registration.
In North Hertfordshire College (NHC) – Implementing Ultimus BPM Suite. NHC saw the need to adapt their business processes to become more responsive to the dynamics of modern education. Approximately 40 administrative processes and automated today, such as various processes in the areas of Course Administration, Human Resource, and Finance

Hi Dafna,
The next column will probably appear in August - the published (BPTrends) intends it to be a
quarterly column. You may want to take a look at www.workflow-research.de, I have some
University offerings listed on the front page there.
Vendors are involved in the CoE program in the sense that several have donated their
software to be used in the curriculum. IDS and SAP and some others (Pegasystems and
Sungard) go a step further and sponsor research projects around BPM, and provide venues for
best practice sharing around BPM education. The founder of IDS, August-Wilhelm Scheer,
has published a number of good textbooks on process modeling using ARIS, we refer to these
as backup literature in our courses.
In our particular situation we demo some tools in class, but the students are free to use
whatever platform they choose to model processes. The reason for that is that we teach 70+ %
of our program at corporate locations, and we cannot ask the students to install trial software
or fat clients on their work PCs. We do, however, point out free software offerings that they
may want to try at home (such as Global 360s Sketchpad, the modelers by Tibco, Sungard, or
Metastorm, and several open source systems, such as JaWe or OpenWFE).
We talk about SCOR and ITIL as a means to structure an organization's process portfolio.
Since many of our students come with a deep IT background they can relate to the ITIL
processes very well. SCOR we use in our supply chain courses.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Best
Michael
