PSB varieties are the final output of an intensive multidisciplinary research activity carried out in tight cooperation with a wide network of highly qualified Italian and foreign research Centers.

PSB was founded in 1911 and is the oldest Seed Company in Italy dealing with the genetic improvement of common wheat, durum wheat and alfalfa.

The breeding activities lead, as final result, to the release of new, improved varieties, which in turn allows us to transfer the research outcomes to the market. The ultimate goal is to create varieties able to fulfill the needs of farmers, agro-food industry and final consumers. Therefore, selection is carried out in close collaboration with the industrial production world, as “a chain”, thus enabling research to correctly address and respond to the progressive evolution of the market requirements.

PSB is involved in advanced pre-competitive research primarily focused on developing effective breeding tools, such as molecular markers, in order to increase the effectiveness of selection for quality and for resistance to pathogens.

In order to shorten the release of new genetic material, the breeding activities are carried out both in field and under controlled environments, climatic chambers and greenhouses.

PSB has a remarkable phenotyping capacity for the main characters of interest in durum wheat: particular attention is paid to yield, morpho-physiological traits, quality and reactivity to biotic and abiotic stress.

PSB owns experimental stations completely dedicated to research activities and directly manages several other testing sites in Northern, Central and Southern Italy.

Thanks also to the cooperation with many private and public research Institutions worldwide, PSB varieties are tested in several different agro-climatic conditions in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, showing their wide adaptability to different environments.

Nowadays, PSB is a leading Company in wheat breeding, providing a reliable response to market requirements in terms of technological quality of its products, while continuing to pursue its own mission: “Improving agricultural production through research and innovation transfer”.
