Background
Real-time simulators came to the nuclear industry as training tools in the 1970s
– Limited computing power– Limited fidelity and
realism– Hand crafted software– “Tuned” to make it work– Used for training
Today’s NPP simulator is high fidelity
– Predictive models– Engineering grade– Multiple uses

Introduction
• Digital instrumentation and control (I&C) and digital control rooms
• New plants designs and the life extension of older plants require validation of these system designs.
• The real-time or dynamic simulator is playing a valuable role in the design of these new systems.

Critical Issues on New Plant Design and Construction
• Plants are using new technology.
• New control and information systems are being introduced that have extensive and complex control and logics.
• Plants will integrate disparate technologies often for the first time.
• Coordination of technology providers for the unit operations and the integration and design of the plant is a huge concern.
• Aggressive scheduling is required to improve the return on investment.

Requires High Fidelity Predictive Models
• INL’s RELAP5-3D Thermohydraulic Model
• Studsvik’s S3R Neutronics Model
• EPRI’s MAAP5 Severe Accident Code
• GSE’s High Fidelity JADE Modeling Tools
The key! Predictive models are necessary for
engineering simulators.

Case Study: Mochovce Nuclear Plant
![Page 8: Innovation in Nuclear Simulation](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032616/55a8c6e71a28abb6108b485b/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)

Two New Units at Mochovce
• Modern power plant consisting of four Soviet VVER 440/V-213
– Units 1&2 operated since 1998 and 2000
– Units 3&4 to be started up in 2015 and 2016
• Owner: Slovenské Elektrárne and Enel
• Primarily modern Siemens controls and a modern control room with a traditional plant design

Project Objective
• High-fidelity full-scope simulator
– All new system models and controls
– New control room panels including emergency control room
– Siemens and other vendors sub-contractor to GSE
– Simulator delivery critical to new plant schedule (critical path)
– Plant controls still in development as simulator was being constructed
