Paddle stiffness is better suited for racing. The stiffer the paddle the more your effort will be transferred to the blades. The lack of flex means more shock is transferred from the paddle to you arms. Extremely stiff paddles are often associated with lower back pain and tendinitis. A good balance is a paddle with a slight flex.

Below you will find a quick tutorial explaining features and benefits of different paddle designs: The wider the paddle blade, the better grip you’ll have on the water, meaning that a wider blade will accelerate your kayak more quickly and turn you more forcefully. The narrower the paddle blade, the less effort it will require to pull the blade through the water (greater efficiency), meaning that a narrower blade will tire you out less quickly and allow you to traverse greater distances before you run out of energy. A good paddle will exhibit a nice blend of both characteristics: decent acceleration, but also good efficiency.
