Spiritually Speaking ... with Rev. Lori Hisson ... Continued from page 1

president Wilda Thomas, has done a wonderful job this year. I’m guessing they would say it hasn’t been easy, but it has lived up to the idea that board mem-bership is a ministry of spiri-tual growth.

We live in a time where countries are experiencing financial downturns and many people have lost their jobs. And yet, when I think about how this has affected our Unity church, I know I can go to a place of fear and lack OR I can go to a place of appreciation.

Living our Principles calls

us all to remember that what we focus on expands.

An easy example would be when I bought my red Toyota RAV. Everywhere I drove I saw red Toyota RAVs and RAVs of all co-lours. Why? Weren’t they there before? Why did I no-tice them now?

Of course they were al-ways there, but I saw them now because I was focus-ing on that particular ve-hicle. What you focus on expands.

There is a process called “Appreciative Inquiry” and

we may invite you into that process in the future. But, until then, you can do it at home too. Take some time to think about Unity of Lon-don and of at least three things you love about it. Write them down, post the note somewhere and keep focusing on that good.

For instance, if you love the people here, and who wouldn’t, you might focus on our numbers at service growing; or focus on the lives that are transformed and we’ll see more of that. If we all focus on what we ap-preciate, imagine the power

we would create together!

When we appreciate something it expands and grows and we see more of it. I believe that’s a power-ful way for all of us and for Unity of London to March forth and demonstrate that what Jesus taught works.

Seek first the Kingdom of God and all else will be added unto you. In other words seek first the right consciousness … a con-sciousness of appreciation and all else will be added unto us.

A Force More Powerful: Part 1 - In the 1930s, Gandhi led a campaign of civil disobedience to loosen Britain's hold on power. Nonviolent weapons were taken up by black college students in the '60s who desegregated Nashville and created a model for the Civil Rights movement.

In 1985, Mkhuseli Jack led a nonviolent consumer boycott in South Africa which awakened whites to black grievances and weakened business support for apartheid.

In 1980, striking workers in Poland demanded independent unions in defiance of the Community Party. In 1983, Chilean workers initiated a wave of nonviolent protests against -- and eventually to defeat -- the military dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet.

Wed. March 21st - Open Mike Night For PeaceThis is a night where participants may express themselves on an open mike through song, music, spoken word and poetry to bring forth the vibration of peace. Everyone is welcome. A love offering will be taken and shared with Open Closet (OC).

Open Closet is a social support group for youth between 14 and 18 years of age who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, two-spirited, queer and questioning their sexual orientation (LGBT2Q). The group started in early 2002 and has served approximately 1,100 youth. OC is open to youth from each of the six counties we serve - Perth, Huron, Lambton, El-gin, Middlesex and Oxford.

The group learns and has discussions about issues such as coming out to parents and friends, queer identities, LGBT2Q history, survival strategies, accessing community, safer sex and healthy and unhealthy relationships.

Some of their Goals are:To create a safe space for youth to participate in discus-

sions and receive support while dealing with matters related to sexual orientation/identity; to offer an opportunity for youth to connect with one another as a community; to engage in semi-structured activities that promote self-awareness, respect, self-esteem and self-confidence; to educate youth about the impact of internalized homophobia, hate of self and others.

Despite apparent lack, “I am a prosperity shaper”

4 Unity of London - Inner Spark - March/April 2012

The President’s Report ... with Wilda Thomas

Who in this community cannot empathize with the 460 Electro-

Motive employees who have recently lost their jobs here in London when Caterpillar decid-ed to close the plant and move the jobs to the States?

My heart goes out to those families who depend on those pay cheques for their mortgag-es, to feed their families and to live their lives. It is especially difficult when you consider that the unemployment rate in London is higher at 9% than the Ontario average of 8.1% and those high paying manu-facturing jobs are few and far between.

And I don’t know about you, but the word about the Cana-da Pension Plan (CPP) being changed, is a concern for me, as I move closer not to Free-

dom 55 but possibly Freedom 65 or 70. I heard on the news that the CPP used to have seven people supporting one retiree, but as the baby boom-ers move into the system there may be only two people supporting each retired per-son. How will that work?

As I read the paper, listen to the local news and watch the news on CBC I have to ad-mit that I am concerned and sometimes fearful for my own future as a self-employed, single woman. So what is the answer?

The late Unity Minis-ter, Eric Butterworth, said in his book Spiritual Economics,The Principles and Process of True Pros-perity:

“We live in a house of con-sciousness and a lot of things go on out there in the world. The most prominent window is the TV screen. As you lis-ten to (actually witness) the news, you are presented with a skillfully produced picture of a world of crime and poverty and economic flux. What am I saying, that we shouldn’t watch the news? Not at all. One may want, even need, to be informed. Just keep in mind that what you are seeing is the appearance of things.”

“The important Truth is that if you are manipulated by the news, then you become a part of the world’s problems; but if you look out the window of Truth and project a foun-tain of light and love, then you are a part of the solution. You become a peacemaker and a prosperity shaper.

“The secret of achieving prosperity lies in so vividly keeping yourself centered in the inner focus of affluence that you literally exude the

consciousness of it.” As the Board moves closer

to the Unity of London Annual General Meeting on March 4 one of the things that we work on is establishing the budget for the upcoming year.

This is a challenge because the fact is our revenue has declined for the past three years, but another fact is that after a loss of $16,194 in 2009, we achieved a mod-est profit in 2010 of $395 and a bigger profit of $4,207 in 2011.Examples of prosperity

Is Unity of London prosper-ous? As you look around on Sunday mornings and see everyone arriving being greeted warmly with a big hug at the front door; when you see the joy with people moving, clapping and sing-ing; when you hear Rev Lo-ri’s inspirational talks; when you see the shining faces of our children; when you hear the laughter in the Fellowship Room, and when you look around and see all the peo-ple who contribute to making our community run smoothly through the volunteering of their time, talent and trea-sure, you absolutely have to say, “We are prosperous!”

And what I know for sure is that God is good and like the flowers in the field, I have been taken care of my whole life. God is not changing and I am a prosperity shaper. Courtnay Kingsbury with daughter

As I am in the pro-cess of stepping down from the

position of Treasurer on the Board of Directors, I want to convey my deep respect and appreciation for each Board Member and all the time and effort they have committed to this past year. It was an honour to be a part of this amazing team.

We have come up with some great fundraising ideas for this year. The first and most exciting is the Feb-ruary Blues Party on Feb 26th!!

There will also be a silent auction that night featuring an array of goods and ser-vices that will appeal to ev-eryone…come prepared to spoil yourselves!!

Our dear friend and sup-porter, Tom Droog, has agreed to donate a two- week vacation again this year in his condo in Mexico,

along with $1,000.00 spend-ing money. Tickets will be available soon.

There are other great ideas taking shape … to be announced.

We all know that great

ideas first form in our minds and then they become real-ity. Do you have any ideas for raising funds? We stand ready to help you to bring your plan to fruition. Let’s chat!

The Thrive Slide that you see every Sunday is our way of saying, “This is where we are and this is where we want to be”.

It takes all of us to get there!

I’m seriously thinking about signing up for the 4T class again in the near future. With all the news we hear I find I need con-stant reminders that I live in the spiritual law of True Abundance.

So why do I keep fall-ing back into those old beliefs of lack? I am so grateful to be a part of the Unity movement which is constant in its lessons of Truth and Principles.

It has been a true honour and privilege to give of my time, talent, and treasure and I commit to continue to do so. Please join me!

Gratitude or Appreciation? What’s the difference?

M a r y H a g a n

Mary Hagan

6 Unity of London - Inner Spark - March/April 2012

From the Volunteer Ministry Coordinator ... Mary Hagan

Is there a difference between gratitude and appreciation and, if so,

what would it be? Th i s ques t i on came

u p d u r i n g a r e c e n t conversation, so I decided to go on a fact-f inding expedition. And here is what I discovered!

One distinction I found was that gratitude is the basis from which appreciation grows and flourishes - if we’re paying attention. That is, we can be grateful for something in our lives without really appreciating it.

The subtle shif t f rom gratitude to appreciation

to generate feelings of appreciation.  One definition of the word appreciation is: “recognition of the quality, value, signif icance, or magnitude of people and things.”

Abraham Hicks explains that love and appreciation carry the same energetic vibration. These feelings help to bring us into alignment with who we truly are. It is the absence of fear and resistance.

Gratitude, on the other hand, carries the signature of past struggles that we have overcome. Abraham points out the difference between gratitude and appreciation is similar to the difference between motivation (makes you go somewhere) and inspiration (you are being

i n v o l v e s b e i n g m o r e present, more thoughtfully a w a r e a n d a c t i v e i n reflecting  on  the  reasons we feel grateful about something or someone.

appreciative, we bring to mind how someone or something makes us feel brighter, lighter, happier, more inspired, energized, and loved. So out of the very foundation of gratitude here at Unity, flows appreciation for each one of our Ministries, our volunteers, and our congregants.

Stay tuned and watch fo r the ar r i va l o f our “Appreciation Tree”. Each month you will have the opportunity to write your words of appreciation for the volunteers that share in our Ministries, one Ministry a month.

Unity of London - Inner Spark - March/April 2012 7

Our first retreat had 14 registrants. We gathered at the Michaelite House near London and spent a wonderful, inspiring and heart-opening January 13-15 weekend dis-covering our power within.

A number of hours were spent in silence, even eating together in silence; time for creative expression; medita-tion in the wonderful Meditation Room that was equipped with sand to write in and decks of angel cards - spiritual cards to reflect on. We plan to offer another retreat in late 2012 or 2013. Stay tuned and watch for details so you too can be blessed by a weekend away to focus on your spiritual growth.

Here are some of the comments from those who par-ticipated: “Creative room excellent: frames provided. I enjoyed the entire program from Friday evening until Sunday. It flowed well, enough free time so no feeling of being rushed. Good balance between free time and programmed time.”

“Love the spirituality basis and Unity teaching, nice variety of activities that encourage going in-ward and ways to express the ideas, feelings that come up, a safe place to support above and beyond.” “Well organized with various activities.”

“So well planned and organized: the best part was the freedom to do things the way I choose rather than being told “how” to do each activity. Thank you!”

“The details were so well planned that relaxation and inner reflection resulted easily and effortlessly. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

Unity’s first Weekend Retreat a HUGE success!

Editor’s note: The Season for Non-Violence will end officially April 4; however, we feel that the reasons for its existence, and the work that was done by Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. to promote world peace, are worthy of honouring all year round. So, we would like to share these prayers so that you can carry a prayer of peace with you throughout the coming months.

4T Prosperity Program starts April 4, 2012

Running from Wednesday April 4 2012 - 6-8 p.m. - for 12 weeks until June 20

PRE-COURSE INFO SESSION: Attendance is required at our pre-course information session to be held on Sunday March 11 at 12:15 p.m. You will see a video that explains the commitment this program requires for you to participate. February registrations will be carried over. The 12-week course requires a minimum of 10 people before the course can run.

Our current beliefs about prosperity and self-worth have developed over our lifetime. If you want to experience the abundance the Universe has for you, new beliefs have to be created to replace the old ones. This course will help you look at what you do believe and ways to change those beliefs.

This famous Unity prosperity program that helps people change the i r consc iousness around prosperity is returning to Unity of London. The text has been updated and the audio CDs have been re-recorded. A new workbook completes the package. If you’ve taken the course before you’ll enjoy the revisions and new sound.

WEDNESDAY PROGRAM

Page 9: Innerspark: Mar/Apr 2012

Unity of London - Inner Spark - March/April 2011 9

“Warm thanks to all my Unity friends for your support”

This Licensed Unity Teacher certificate was displayed at the entrance of the sanctuary before being presented to Pat Moauro, a newly qualified Licensed Teacher at Unity of London, recently.

Sometimes a long-term goal takes so long to reach that when it

finally is completed, you may find it hard to believe. That’s how I felt recently after completing my long-term goal of becoming a Licensed Unity Teacher (LUT).

I completed my final class-es and testing to qualify as a LUT and received formal approval late last fall; how-ever, it took almost two more months for my large wall cer-tificate to arrive, to have it framed and to receive it dur-ing a formal presentation and ceremony at Unity of London January 22.

Firstly, thank you to our lov-ing, dedicated, minister here at Unity of London, Rev. Lori Hisson, a long-time friend who has consistently sup-ported my spiritual journey, including my efforts to qualify as a LUT.

I’ve been blessed to have her support, encourage-ment and quiet assurance that I eventually would find what I was searching for, as she calmly reminded me to “go within for the answers.” Thanks Rev. Lori for being an angel in my life.

Warm thanks, also, to all my friends, old and new, in Unity of London and the in-ternational Unity family who offered many kind, congrat-ulatory comments in cards

and in person. These in-clude Chuck and Suzanne Semple of St. Thomas, and Peter and Claudette Foy, London, who were all vac-tioning in Naples, Florida in January, for sending their thoughtful card and kind comments.

All of your warm, loving and encouraging comments are much appreciated.

Thank you Wilda Thom-as for the great job you did on the 20”-by-16” glassed frame for my LUT certificate (see photo at right and pho-to on page1), and, along with Rev. Lori, for present-ing it to me during the Janu-ary 22 ceremony.

Wilda has been Presi-dent of the Unity of Lon-don Board of Directors and will step down after a new president is elected during the Annual General Meet-ing on March 4.

After the formal presenta-tion and special ceremony with Rev. Lori, it didn’t take long for me to get to work as a newly-minted LUT.

I had the privilege and pleasure of conducting my first “for credit” class on Wednesday evenings in January - Metaphysics 1 Part 1, followed by Part 2 each Wednesday evening in February.

We enjoyed highly in-teresting and thought-provoking discussions and dialogue during every class. The 2 to 2 1/2-hours for each class zipped by

quickly as we delved into deeper metaphysical teach-ings underlying basic Unity beliefs. I know all of us benefited greatly from the material and the comments from each class participant.

And, finally, to everyone who has been attending Unity services and events, whether for many years or just recently:

Be assured that if you persevere and continue to look to the indwelling Christ presence, you will find what you are seeking. And so it is.

The Bond offers scientific story of life, human experience

Well, will it come in like a lamb or a lion? March, that

is. Let’s all send wishes for the lion so March will go out like a lamb and we would truly have experienced one of the nicest winters ever.

Spirit Matters is pleased to introduce our new bookstore 'babe', Patty. We welcome her energy to our team. If you think you would like to volun-teer in the bookstore, please come and see me after ser-vice any time.

Unity of London's upcom-ing read is The Bond. It tells us that “...a revolutionary new

understanding is emerging from the laboratories of the most cutting-edge physicists,

biologists, and psychologists. What matters is not the iso-lated entity, but the space be-tween things, the relationship of things.”

Written by international best-selling author Lynne McTag-gart, The Bond is the culmi-nation of her groundbreaking work. It offers a completely new, scientific story of life and the human experience; one that challenges the very way we conceive of ourselves and our world. The Bond shows that the essential impulse of all life is a will to connect rath-er than a drive to compete.

McTaggart offers detailed recommendations to help foster more holistic thinking, more cooperative relation-ships, and more unified social groups.

A simple daily practice con-ditions the brain;

A new way of speaking and listening;

People who fire together wire together: The brains of all parties begin to get on the same wavelength;

Fairness is more powerful than unfairness.

is "Discover the Power With-in You". In the 40th anniver-

sary edition of the book of the same name, author Eric Butterworth inspires tour de force. The author shares the greatest discovery of all time: the ability to see the divine within us all. Butter-worth reveals this hidden and untapped resource to be a source of limitless abundance.

Exploring this "depth po-tential," Butterworth out-lines ways in which we can release the power locked within us for better health, greater confidence, in-creased success, and in-spired openness to let our "light shine" forth for others.

Changes Oprah’sperspective on life, religion

Oprah Winfrey claimed: “Eric Butterworth teaches that God isn’t ‘up there.’ He exists in, around, above and through each one of us, and it’s up to us to seek the divine within. This book changed my per-spective on life and religion."

At Spirit Matters we endeav-our to continue to provide materials for your Spiritual growth at affordable prices and we never charge taxes! Please continue to support your bookstore and always feel free to ask if I can get something in for you.

Thanks and have a glorious spring. In Love and Light,
