Scrapping Policy –� BMTC follows the policy of scrapping old buses which have covered

8.50 lakhs Kms of operation or 10 years of age.

Environmental Initiatives by BMTC

1. Aforestation :- Massive afforestation programme was implemented.

2. Smoke Emission Checks:- BMTC has launched a programme of routine

smoke emission checks covering the entire fleet at regular intervals.

3. Rain water Harvesting:- Rain water harvesting / Water Recycling has

been implemented in all most all the depots of Depots of BMTC.

SAFE GUARDING ENVIRONMENT BMTC by being the sole public transport provider is also the largest

fleet owner. It is committed to its social obligation of working for a

clean and pollution free environment through adoption of latest

automobile technology and bus maintenance techniques its

contribution in controlling pollution in the city is significant. The

following are steps initiate in this direction.

a) Use of low Sulphur content HSD in its Buses.

b) It has the youngest fleet in comparison to any state transport

undertaking in the country.

c) The engines installed in its buses conform to Euro-4 emission

standards.

d) Every Bus in its fleet under goes a standard emission to check each

month to ensure permissible smoke levels.

Bus Day 1. BMTC introduced new concept - “Bus Day” on 4th of Feb

2010 to encourage more commuters to leave their private

vehicles at home and use public transportation for

commuting.

2. BMTC has established a tradition of celebrating Bus Day on

the 4th of every month.

3. The main objectives of the campaign is to raise awareness on

public transport as a sustainable commuting choice for

livable cities, weaning away private vehicle form the roads to

reduce journey times and improve air quality.

4. Publicity of the bus day is done through posters on

buses/important bus stands/junctions/companies along with buses/important bus stands/junctions/companies along with

SMS/email concept, caps and banners.

Monitoring Effects of Bus Day:-

1. The result is encouraging:

a. Ridership increased by 10% with revenue statistics

witnessing a positive rise, hence boosting BMTC’s

enthusiasm to sustain this tradition.

b. Vehicle Speeds increased almost by 10% on some Bus day.

c. Pollution dropped by 10% on Bus Days.

2. Public Response to Bus Day has been very good in terms of

both rider-ship and awareness regarding benefits of public

transport.
