Objectives
In this project, we will be analyzing a spacecraft entering Earth's atmosphere using
FLUENT.Our analysis will cover the following parts:
Studying the velocity distribution over the spacecraft
Studying the air distribution over the spacecraft
Studying the effect of Mach number on the spacecraft
Varying the nose tip of the spacecraft and analyzing the effect.
Comparison of theoretical results with the result obtained using FLUENT.
Research Papers
1.An Aerodynamic Optimization of Supersonic flow over the nose conesection of missiles
This is a research paper written by two research scholars and one design specialist from
UPES,India.
Purpose of the Paper:
Their purpose was to prove that a new curvature model was more thermally resistant than a
previous spherical model.
They designed 2D supersonic nose cone models of missiles in GAMBIT and analyzed these
models for Mach number 3 in FLUENT.
Relevant to our project:
As we are going to analyze the velocity at different mach speeds by varying the tip of the
spacecraft, this research paper gives a general idea about the aerodynamic effects on the
different curvatures.

2.Aerodynamics Analysis of a Manned Space Vehicle for Mission to Mars
This research paper is written by Giuseppe Pezzella and Antonio Viviani, Aerothermodynamics
Division, Centre of Aerospace Research,Italy.
Purpose of the paper:
This paper dealt with the aerodynamic analysis of a spacecraft entering Mars
atmosphere.Different Mach numbers at different angle of attacks were analyzed.
Relevant to our paper:
One part of our project deals with the effect of Mach number on the spacecraft and air
distribution.So,this research paper gave a general idea on the topic.
