Magazine Initial Ideas
Genre I have decided to choose ‘Alternative Rock’ as the
genre for my music magazine. This is because it is a
music genre that I am interested in and I feel that there
is a large target market for this genre, which will make
my magazine appeal to a wide range of people.
Alternative Rock artists include Twin Atlantic, Fall Out
Boy and Bastille and these are the type of bands that
would be featured in my magazine.
Name I have a few possible ideas for the name of my alternative rock magazine:
Mosh – The word ‘Mosh’ has connotations of rock music, with mosh pits regularly occurring at concerts.
All Time Rock (ATR) – This name would show the reader immediately what genre the magazine is about. It can also be abbreviated which gives a number of possibilities for the magazine masthead.
Simply Rock – This name has a very bold tone to it. The appeal is that it gives the implication to the reader that this is ‘simply a rock magazine’. Also, both words contradict each other, because rock is not simple, this gives it an edgy feel.
Amplify – This is a very effective name because the word amplify has a lot of connotations such as music, volume etc. and amplifiers are usually used with electric guitars which links in with the alternative rock genre of the magazine.
Chosen Name I have decided to choose the name ‘Amplify’ but I have
decided to tweak it and add an exclamation mark, so the name of my magazine will be ‘Amplify!’. The reason I chose this name rather than the others, is because I feel like the two names that included the word ‘rock’ gave the impression that it is a hard rock magazine, when in reality it is an alternative rock magazine. I did not choose ‘Mosh’ because I felt it would not look good on the cover of my magazine and also it sounds like ‘Mash’. In comparison to ‘Amplify!’ which has connotations of sound, music, guitars and it sounds like a very edgy name to link in with the genre of alternative rock.
Name Font I have a few ideas for the font I would like to use for my
name ‘Amplify!’. Considering it will be on the cover of
the magazine I want it to stand out and represent the
genre of alternative rock, but also represent the name
itself, being bold, loud, and edgy.
Body Font I have decided that the body font will be in capital bold
letters to represent the genre of alternative rock by
standing out, catching the readers attention.
Possible fonts for this could be:
ARIAL BLACK
CENTURY GOTHIC
HELVETICA
House Style There are four colours that are going to make up my house
style for my magazine. They will be black, blue, yellow and white.
The reason that I have chose these colours is because black and white go well together, the black represents the alternative rock and the white contrasts it well. The dark blue also goes well with both black and white, and the dark shade also represents alternative rock. In contrast, the sharp bright yellow represents electricity, for example electric guitars and it also represents the name ‘Amplify!’ and it gives a loud, shocking look on the front cover.
Camera Shots
These are the kind of shots I am considering for my
cover photo. Either a medium shot or a medium full
shot; this is because it fives a good view of the whole
band and it immediately shows the reader who is
going to be the main focus in this issue.
