Choice of genre In my research and planning process, I initially had the idea of creating a music video to a grime track by Devlin (shown in initial target audience research). I had several different ideas for a number of different songs which I will explain further in the PowerPoint.

The second genre I had in mind was a R and B/ Rock genre. This would include tracks from artists such as Jason Derulo, Kings Of Leon and Arctic Monkeys. These were some of my personal favorites which I thought I could use.

Devlin- London CityThis was the first song choice which I chose. My decision for this choice was mainly because it is one of my favourite songs and I like Devlins style of music. I also had a very ambitious idea to go along with the idea.

The idea was to create a time lapse video showing movement within the city. This would be movement of people, cars, buses, boats, trains, The London Eye, river etc. I thought this would be really aesthetically pleasing, interesting and unique. However, I found a few faults whilst scoping this idea out.

The Faults• London is within travelling distance, however it is

not largely accessible compared to a local area such as Windsor. This would be difficult especially for reshooting of shots.

• The final video may look good, however I could find it difficult to incorporate genre conventions and music video conventions. Conventions are important for an audience to understand a video in most cases.

• Filming in London at night would be difficult due to light levels. Also, this could be dangerous for my own safety as I could be targeted by thieves

Conventions of Grime• Using the artist within the video (performing)- this can

sometimes create an effect that makes the audience feel like they have more of a link to the artist, and the audience is able to relate to the artist in this way.

• Urban areas (on the streets). The urban areas have a strong chance of being an area where the artist grew up in. many grime artists grew up on the streets.

• Branded clothing- common brands include Nike and Adidas. This is important because they're well known brands which are popular.

• Typical narratives are ones which are based on reality and/or events which have actually occurred. Common parts of this include an artists past life where they struggled from a young age but still can be successful.

• Close ups are also common. This is to show the sad expression on the artists face which make the audience feel

Why so difficult? In my research into grime videos, I have explained that many videos base their idea around real events. This can be personal events in the past which are sometimes reinacted/ shown in the video. A good example of this is 'Community Outcast’ by Devlin. I thought that my grime video would not have the same effect because it would not be based around real events. Many grime videos are narrative based, where as my idea for the song London City is based on a concept. This may cause confusion into the video and the audience may not understand what I am trying to communicate in the video.

Devlin-Community OutcastThe second choice of song for the grime genre was Community Outcast by Devlin. My idea for this video would be based around strugglers within society. This would be the ‘outcast’ of the society. This would ensure that the audience understands how the video links to the song. I would use specific shots of real life poverty including shots of run down areas, tramps on the streets and depression and anger. This would drive the emotions which I want to reflect in the video, which will affect the emotions of the audience and in turn, allowing them to remember the video.

The Faults• Filming real life tramps could be difficult because a

lot of them would not agree to be filmed. Also, it is not really fair on them.

• It is not one of my most liked tracks by the artist. For my final video, I would like a song that I take a heavy liking to. This would allow me to create my video more effectively if i know the song throughout. For example, I can cut to the beat easier and relate to the lyrics of the song more effectively through the footage. In this particular song, I don't know the lyrics exactly and the song isn't as familiar as some others.

Different Genre • The alternative genre I had in mind was a rock/pop based genre. This

would be music from artists such as Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys and James Arthur. This list of artists are some of my favoured artists in this genre. This would allow me to be able to have more of a understanding of their style of music to create a video which would work with the music track.

Research into James Arthur

10

I have looked at a number of music tracks and found a regular theme to his work. in his music, he tried to communicate depression. The songs are very negative which is done through the use of saddening lyrics and titles of songs. Some of the main examples of his songs which depict this include:

SuicideImpossibleRecovery

These songs create the depressing mood which I will base my music video idea around. This will ensure that the video is parallel to the lyrics of the song and the viewers will be able to understand the video in this way.
